This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution of the Electric Incandescent Lamp In the following pages an effort has been made to bring together, in a convenient and accessible form, some of these detached fragments which seemed to have present or prospective historical value, and at the same time, as far as practicable, to indicate for the benefit of future investigators the sources from whence they have been derived. It is hoped that each reader will thus be enabled to formulate his own answer to the inquiry as to whom the world is principally indebted for modern incandescent electric lighting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Incandescent Lamp The Incandescent Electric Lamp as made and patented by Mr. Edison, is the foundation stone upon which the great electric light and power industry of today has been built. The great electric companies which were organized in the early 80's, - the Edison Electric Illuminating Companies, as they were generally known, in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and in many other places - were organized to light their territories with the Edison incandescent lamp. This was practically the only business or source of revenue that these companies had, since electric motors were not well developed and came slowly into use. When Mr. Edison started to make a lamp factory at Menlo Park, in the fall of 1880, he started an entirely new industry. He could get no tools, machinery, or experience from other industries, therefore they all had to be created, designed, and built from experience as he went along. Lamps were still more or less of a mystery, and the simple laws relating to them were not well understood. Electrical instruments were home made, as no suitable ones could be purchased. The Harrison lamp factory was wired with bare wire, stapled on the wood beams, and no cut-outs or switches were available. An Archimedes screw pump for raising the mercury used in exhausting lamps was the only piece of machinery used in the Menlo Park lamp factory, except the blower used by the glass blowers and in the carbonizing room. Constant experimenting was done to determine the relative advantages of different ways of performing the various operations, and it was a long time before definite methods were settled upon. These methods were frequently changed as more experience was accumulated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Edison s Electric Light

Download or read book Edison s Electric Light written by Robert Friedel and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1878, Thomas Alva Edison brashly—and prematurely—proclaimed his breakthrough invention of a workable electric light. That announcement was followed by many months of intense experimentation that led to the successful completion of his Pearl Street station four years later. Edison was not alone—nor was he first—in developing an incandescent light bulb, but his was the most successful of all competing inventions. Drawing from the documents in the Edison archives, Robert Friedel and Paul Israel explain how this came to be. They explore the process of invention through the Menlo Park notes, discussing the full range of experiments, including the testing of a host of materials, the development of such crucial tools as the world's best vacuum pump, and the construction of the first large-scale electrical generators and power distribution systems. The result is a fascinating story of excitement, risk, and competition. Revised and updated from the original 1986 edition, this definitive study of the most famous invention of America's most famous inventor is completely keyed to the printed and electronic versions of the Edison Papers, inviting the reader to explore further the remarkable original sources.

Book Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application Classic Reprint

Download or read book Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application Classic Reprint written by Daniel H. Ogley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application Since the advent of the carbon filament incandescent lamp so many wonderful discoveries have been made that the adoption of the electric glow lamp as an illuminant is now almost universal. A little thought will establish the fact, however, that the improvements made have been chiefly in the lamp itself, the introduction of the metal filament being responsible for the increased efficiency that has placed electric lighting practically within reach of all. In comparison with the advances made in filament construction those made in the direction of scientific artificial lighting have been small. The formation of the Illuminating Engineering Society has done much to create an interest in this important subject, while further, the work of Government Commissions and the publication of their reports on school, factory and library lighting has served still more to impress people with the importance of adequate illumination. If good lighting is important in public institutions it is equally if not more important in the home, and the approved methods of disposing of the light units so as to avoid unnecessary glare and produce an adequate illumination, as well as the judicious selection of wall and ceiling coverings, should be fully understood by all users and installers of electric light. The existing literature on the subject is of too scientific and technical a character for other than scientists, and in presenting this treatise the author hopes that the obvious gap may be filled and that the general reader may be assisted in deciding upon the most suitable candle-power and distribution in his own particular case. The author has to thank Messrs. Siemens Bros, for information concerning tantalum and permission to reproduce one of their diagrams; Messrs. The General Electric Co. for information concerning the drawing down of tungsten filaments; Messrs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
