Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Educational Ideal The following brief sketch of world educational development and progress is offered with the belief that it may prove of real service to three classes of students and readers. The first is a large and a rapidly increasing body of young people, now enrolled in short-course teachers-training classes in the different states, and where there is neither the opportunity nor the inclination to devote much time to a study of the history of education. The second is a rather large body of actual teachers who have never been afforded the opportunity to study the subject, and who now desire to read an elementary introductory outline for individual information and profit, and to have some direction as to further reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Educational Ideal With the passing away of tribal life the old simplicity was lost, and customs and habits became more complex. But the primitive mind, so long subjected to the authority of the tribal leader, failed to respond to the opportunity for greater individual develop ment, and became an inert mass, blindly and dully obeying the dictates of a despotic ruler. The birthplace of human history was in the East. The march of progress has been toward the West. New and higher forms of civiliza tion enlarged the content of the educational ideal. The old order changeth, yielding place to new, said King Arthur to his sor rowing knight, and so it is with the old ideals. Book A History of Western Educational Ideas

Download or read book A History of Western Educational Ideas written by Professor Peter Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is important that all those concerned with education - parents, teachers, administrators and policymakers - should have a reasonable understanding of the present system and how it has developed, sometimes over a period of many years. This work traces the development of Western educational ideas from the Greek society of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, to the ideas and ideologies behind some of the controversial issues in education today. This book discusses the continuous development of educational thought over three millennia. The focus upon the history of ideas in this volume is partly an attempt to move history of education away from an approach based on 'great men' to technological, economic and political influences on ideas and beliefs. It reviews many issues, ranging from the purposes of education from the earliest times, to the challenge of postmodernism in the present century. The authors provide an accessible and thought-provoking guide to the educational ideas that underlie practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Ideal: An Outline of Its Growth in Modern Times A natural education is not one, as is too often supposed, in which the child is left to grow up, as he may, subject to the chances of his environment, a prey to his own inclina tions. It is not one in which he is kept aloof from man, in a forced communion with non-human things. Neither is it one unwisely trusted to the instincts of a natural, but un trained affection. Still less is it one in which the old ped agogic drill in formal studies is thrown aside to give place to a pseudo-scientific playing, a vague and formless potter ing with objective phenomena. The real natural educa tion is that aimed at in the best endeavor of to-day, in which the child, from the moment of his birth, is steadily, rationally, and intelligently developed, by trained and sym pathetic minds, towards the best manhood possible to him. Such an education is not simply mental; it is physical; above all, it is moral. In it, the child's individuality is preserved, but is pruned and guided; he himself furnishes the impulse towards his own development, but the channels in which this force acts, the ends towards which it directs itself, are determined for him. A natural education is one in which the subject taught is secondary to the manner of teaching; in which the task done is subsidiary to the effect of doing it; in which the question to be asked at the com pletion of an educational step is not, What has the child learned? But, What has the child become? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, federal mandates in education have become the subject of increasing debate. Adam R. Nelson's The Elusive Ideal—a postwar history of federal involvement in the Boston public schools—provides lessons from the past that shed light on the continuing struggles of urban public schools today. This far-reaching analysis examines the persistent failure of educational policy at local, state, and federal levels to equalize educational opportunity for all. Exploring deep-seated tensions between the educational ideals of integration, inclusion, and academic achievement over time, Nelson considers the development and implementation of policies targeted at diverse groups of urban students, including policies related to racial desegregation, bilingual education, special education, school funding, and standardized testing. An ambitious study that spans more than thirty years and covers all facets of educational policy, from legal battles to tax strategies, The Elusive Ideal provides a model from which future inquiries will proceed. A probing and provocative work of urban history with deep relevance for urban public schools today, Nelson's book reveals why equal educational opportunity remains such an elusive ideal.

This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 1175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, the Handbook of Educational Ideas and Practices was written for practitioners and students in the field of education and its related services and was designed to appeal to educationists no matter what their nationality. Focusing mainly on compulsory schooling, it provides summaries of the thinking, research findings, and innovatory practices current at the time. However, the book is also careful to present a complete picture of education and therefore includes a separate section for education beyond school which covers pre-school level, post-secondary level, and adult and continuing education. There are also other chapters dealing with aspects of organization, curriculum, and teaching in various forms of tertiary education. Indeed, each topic has been discussed by an acknowledged expert writing in sufficient detail in order to resist trivialization.

Book excerpt: In this revolutionary book, a renowned computer scientist explains the importance of teaching children the basics of computing and how it can prepare them to succeed in the ever-evolving tech world. Computers have completely changed the way we teach children. We have Mindstorms to thank for that. In this book, pioneering computer scientist Seymour Papert uses the invention of LOGO, the first child-friendly programming language, to make the case for the value of teaching children with computers. Papert argues that children are more than capable of mastering computers, and that teaching computational processes like de-bugging in the classroom can change the way we learn everything else. He also shows that schools saturated with technology can actually improve socialization and interaction among students and between students and teachers. Technology changes every day, but the basic ways that computers can help us learn remain. For thousands of teachers and parents who have sought creative ways to help children learn with computers, Mindstorms is their bible.
