Hardening is a metal heat treatment during which the most critical operation is cooling. Most quenchants used for steel hardening are vaporizable liquids, such as water, petroleum oils, emulsions, aqueous polymer solutions, or brines. Testing methodologies that include ISO 9950, Industrial Quenching Oils-determination of Cooling Characteristics-Nickel-alloy Probe Test Method, and ASTM Standards: D6200, Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Quench Oils by Cooling Curve Analysis, D6482, Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Aqueous Polymer Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Tensi Method), D6549, Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Quenchants by Cooling Curve Analysis with Agitation (Drayton Unit), and D7646, Standard Test Method for Determination of Cooling Characteristics of Aqueous Polymer Quenchants for Aluminum Alloys by Cooling Curve Analysis, are typically used to evaluate the cooling characteristics of these quenchants or processes. The cooling time-temperature curves obtained by these methodologies traditionally involve three stages of cooling. However, the relationship between this model and heat treatment, especially between hardening theory and practice, has not been satisfactory. Therefore, it is necessary to better understand the relationship between cooling theory and metallurgical behavior to create a new cooling model that achieves zero distortion, zero dispersion of quality, and zero pollution, which are concepts proposed in the "Heat Treating Industry Vision 2020 "and the "Heat Treating Technology Roadmap 2004" by the ASM Heat Treating Society and Materials Treating Institute. The relationship between the physical metallurgical phenomenon of phase transformation of a steel workpiece during quenching after being austenitized and the actual cooling conditions in engineering practice were analyzed and discussed in this report. Additionally, the development of advanced cooling technologies and related quenching equipment are discussed. The evolution from cooling model research to cooling engineering construction represents important progress in heat treatment practice.

The heat treatment process itself is considered as a cycle of heating the workpieces to a predetermined temperature, keeping them at this temperature for the time period required, and cooling them to room temperature in an appropriate way. The process of heating and keeping workpieces at the required temperature is now adays weil mastered and mostly automatized. The process of cooling or quenching which determines actually the resulting properties, is handicapped with many physical and technical uncertainties. Good results can already be obtained predominantly by using empirically based practice. But increased demands on the properties of the pro ducts as weIl as demands on safety and environment conditions of the quenching media require efforts to investigate the details of the quenching process and to transfer the results of the research to practical application. Advances in the knowledge about quenching processes have been achieved by modem applied thermodynamics especially by the heat and mass transfer researches; further the application of computer technology was helpful to new approaches in quenching pro cesses. Special emphases has been given to: - The theory of heat transfer and heat exchange intensification during quenching - Wetting kinematics - Residual stresses after quenching - Determination of the quenching intensity - Prediction of microstructural transformation and hardness distribution after quenching, the latter with some limitations.

Book excerpt: Methods for determining the main service characteristics of cooling devices (irrigation density, its distribution on the cooling surface, and dependence of the heat-transfer coefficient versus temperature) are described. An investigation of technological and design parameters of spraying jets and their effect on cooling capability of large steel forgings (e.g., hot-rolling mill rolls) are presented. The technological parameters under consideration are water pressure in spraying jets and the number of spraying jets in a cooling device. The varied design parameters of spraying jets are the diameters of the channels in spraying jets, the distance between the jets, and the distance from the cooling surface. The results of the experiments were applied to obtain the dependency between technological and design parameters versus main service characteristics of spraying jets to develop and optimize the technology of heat treatment of large steel forgings. These relations were applied for modeling spray cooling of hot-rolling mill rolls.

Book excerpt: The Ultra Dry Cooling project objective is to validate and facilitate the industrial transfer of a rupture technology. This technology is a new steel strip cooling method that offers very high cooling rates, while in the same time being inert for the strip, to enable metallic coating directly after cooling. The basic principle of Ultra Dry Cooling is to spray a liquid hydrocarbon on the hot strip, a part of the hydrocarbon being vaporized at the contact between droplets and the steel surface. The liquid and vapor phases are recovered in a closed loop. Several key steps have been defined to secure the industrialization. It includes at first the establishment of experimental correlation of heat transfer on a laboratory test bench. Then a complete safety study has been conducted to secure the industrial design. An Endless Strip Bench has been built and commissioned based on this design, and tests have been undertaken for pentane and then hayeptane as cooling fluid, after modification of the bench. Good behavior and high cooling performances have been demonstrated on the bench with heptane as a cooling fluid. The last part of the project focused on the basic engineering of the industrial design of the system using heptane, and on a deep study of steel surface quality after being cooled down by heptane. Conclusions are very encouraging, as an industrial solution has been determined, cooling performance and surface quality demonstrated. Finally, potential applications of the technology have been highlighted through contacts with main steelmakers.
