Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Dogma A striking illustration of the unwisdom of com mitting one's self to premature notions, or unproved hypotheses, especially before all the evidence in the case is properly weighed, is afforded in the long and animated controversy respecting the authorship of the Pentateuch. Many reasons have been assigned by the higher critics why it could not have been the production of Moses, to whom it has so long been ascribed by a venerable tradition, and one of the objections urged against the Mosaic authorship was, that written language was unknown in the age dur ing which the Jewish legislator is reputed to have lived. Now, however, the distinguished philologist and archaeologist, Prof. Sayce, comes forward and proves, beyond doubt or quibble, that the conten tion of the higher critics respecting the authorship of the Bible is ill-founded. So sure, indeed, is he, whereof he speaks, that he does not hesitate to assert not only that Moses could have written the Pentateuch, but that it would have been something like a miracle if he had not done so. Book excerpt: Dogma is based on beliefs that have established the state of mental evolution of man and is based on his history of mental consciousness. It establishes factors which influenced our present psyche and its progression leading to our present dismal state of affairs. It outlines, projects and recommends future changes in attitudes and conditions which may have profound influences of the future of our planet. More specifically, it recommends changes dictated by a more diverse America, with equally diverse attitudes towards each other, coupled with needed changes in competitive relationships and Christian attitudes of how we relate to each other. Dogma explores the most reflective changes in the path to our future quality of life, liberty and happiness which are reflected by our education system where the whys, whose and whats of how we educate our people, must be in prime focus to augment realistic progress towards our desired goals. Because of complexities dictated by the psychological research involving diverse people, Dogma recommends that our educational system be changed to a more technically based system capable of better analytical analysis involving multiple and more complicated interactions characteristic of problems of the mind. The contentions of Dogma lay heavily with unexplained life observations and studies coupled with diligent applications of scientific methods to answer the complex questions posed future trends. For example, Why do poorer nations display increased dogmatic attitudes than more developed nations? And, why do more developed nations acquiesces to and accepts things that are obviously not correct? What are the causes of mass murders, and poor academic performances of minority groups? Why is compromise such a dirty word? The answers cannot be in more incarcerations or more wars. The recommended corrections in dogma are based on solid scientific rational and real life experiences. Therefore, the contentions and recommendations of Dogma are alive and well. And, so is the fact that additional researches on these subjects are necessary and valid for our effective continued evolution.

Book The Structure of Evolutionary Theory

Download or read book The Structure of Evolutionary Theory written by Stephen Jay Gould and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 1460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most revered and eloquent interpreter of evolutionary ideas offers here a work of explanatory force unprecedented in our time—a landmark publication, both for its historical sweep and for its scientific vision. With characteristic attention to detail, Stephen Jay Gould first describes the content and discusses the history and origins of the three core commitments of classical Darwinism: that natural selection works on organisms, not genes or species; that it is almost exclusively the mechanism of adaptive evolutionary change; and that these changes are incremental, not drastic. Next, he examines the three critiques that currently challenge this classic Darwinian edifice: that selection operates on multiple levels, from the gene to the group; that evolution proceeds by a variety of mechanisms, not just natural selection; and that causes operating at broader scales, including catastrophes, have figured prominently in the course of evolution. Then, in a stunning tour de force that will likely stimulate discussion and debate for decades, Gould proposes his own system for integrating these classical commitments and contemporary critiques into a new structure of evolutionary thought. In 2001 the Library of Congress named Stephen Jay Gould one of America’s eighty-three Living Legends—people who embody the “quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication, and exuberance.” Each of these qualities finds full expression in this peerless work, the likes of which the scientific world has not seen—and may not see again—for well over a century.

Book excerpt: In this book, John Augustine Zahm, C.S.C., makes a concerted effort to reconcile the biological theory of evolution with the Catholic dogma of Creation. Fr. Zahm threads the findings of science into an interpretation of the works of St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Augustine of Hippo, and St. Thomas Aquinas, all the while defending the indisputable existence of God, the Creator of all things. The twist? Only the primordial matter was created out of nothing, and from it, through the laws with which God has endowed nature, all creatures were created secondarily. Fr. Zahm acknowledges that the six-day account of Creation in Genesis need not be read literally, so as to accommodate the evidence from geology regarding the age of the earth, and from paleontology, of that of plants and animals. He allows for a "two origins" theory of the creation of man, as follows: Man's body was subject to evolution, but that at a certain point in its development, God created and infused a soul into Adam, the first man, and into Eve, his wife. Adam and Eve are the ancestors common to all mankind. And, God created and will create a soul for every conception since the children of our first parents. This book earned Fr. Zahm harsh criticisms from many fronts, including the Jesuits in Europe who delated it to the Sacred Congregation of the Index. A decree of prohibition against it was written, but through the efforts of influential clergy, it was never published. Thereafter, a cloud hung over Catholic scholarship on evolution. It was only lifted in 1950 by the Encyclical Humani generis of Pope Pius XII. In it, the Pontiff allowed Catholic scholars to treat and teach evolution as a hypothesis. In 1996, Pope St. John Paul II, indicated his acceptance of the "two origins" theory, writing, "if the human body takes its origin from pre-existent living matter, the spiritual soul is immediately created by God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dogma of Evolution The leaders of scientific thought, in the sixteenth century, believed that the question involved an or ganized revolution of method. If the earth, and all it contained, were merely a part of a universe subject solely to mechanical laws and forces, then a death blow had been given to the dogma of the Church, founded on the inspiration of the Scriptures and on the interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy, that the world was fashioned for man by a Creator and Ruler of the universe who could, and frequently did, supersede natural law. Excerpt: ... the teachings of Greek philosophy and modern science respecting the theory of Evolution. According to Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, the world and all it contains were generated from simple primordial matter. From the simple proceeds the complex, from the indeterminate, To faetpov, arise all the manifold differentiated forms of the cosmos. Living originates from non-living matter, because all life had its origin in pristine mud. Heraclitus anticipates Darwin's notion of " the struggle for existence," in his view of conflict, itdit/iot, as the originator of all things, and also in his conception of the endeavor made by individuals to insure their existence against the processes of destruction with which they are surrounded. Empedocles, like our modern scientists, taught not only that all terrestrial things arise from certain primitive elements, but also, like Darwin, recognized a development in animal and vegetable forms. He likewise attempted to explain the origin of the various organic beings, species, genera, etc., by the existence of certain adaptations which tend to perpetuate themselves. Teleological Ideas of Anaxagoras and Aristotle. The first one of the Greek philosophers to take a teleological view of nature, to perceive in the wonderful adaptations everywhere manifested an evidence of intelligent design, was Anaxagoras. His predecessors and contemporaries were, for the most part, believers in the doctrine that all things were originated by chance, or the fortuitous concourse of atoms, and were, consequently, adherents of what is now known as the monistic or mechanical theory of the universe. This can be predicated especially of Democritus, the founder of Atomism and the forerunner of Materialism. But it was reserved for ..".

Book Darwinism Dogma and Cultural Evolution

Download or read book Darwinism Dogma and Cultural Evolution written by C R Hallpike and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neo-Darwinian philosophy postulates that random variation plus selection is sufficient to explain the emergence of order in the natural world. Working from this premise, anthropologists explain vengeance, warfare, cannibalism, and religion on the basis of their survival value, while ignoring the actual historical origins of these human institutions. Dr. Hallpike challenges the assumption that competition between different ways of thinking and acting necessarily selects for the most biologically fit, observing that it is often the mediocre alternative that survives. He suggests that because human beings possess consciousness and free will, scientists should consider human selection, rather than natural selection, as the primary agent driving change in our technologies, institutions, practices, and values. Dr. C. R. Hallpike is an anthropologist who began his career working in the field with the Konso of Ethiopia and Tauade tribes of Papua New Guinea. He has written extensively on diverse topics, including cultural relativism, social evolution, primitive thought, the nature of religion, warfare, moral development, and the origins of modern science.
