Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Evolution: Its Basis and Its Scope The present volume consists of a series of eight addresses delivered as the Hewitt Lectures of Columbia University at Cooper Union in New York City during the months of February and March, 1907. The purpose of these lectures was to describe in concise outline the Doctrine of Evolution, its basis in the facts of natural history, and its wide and universal scope. They fall naturally into two groups. Those of the first part deal with matters of definition, with the essential character istics of living things, and, at greater length, with the evidences of organic evolution. The lectures of the second group take up the various aspects of human evolution as a special instance of the general organic process. In this latter part of the series, the subject of physical evolution is first considered, and this is followed by an analysis of human mental evolution; the chapter on social evolution extends the funda mental principles to a field which is not usually con sidered by biologists, and its purpose is to demonstrate the efficiency of the genetic method in this department as in all others; finally, the principles are extended to what is called the higher human life, the realm, namely, of ethical, religious, and theological ideas and ideals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Evolution 1889-1907 It will, I think, be realized that, although the separate essays were delivered as addresses or published on various occasions and at very different dates, they are the expres sion of a continuous line of thought, and therefore fall together as naturally as if they had been written at one time, for the purposes of the present volume. A certain amount of overlap is necessary in essays dealing with closely related subjects. Any inconvenience from this cause and the scattered use of examples, in evitable in an essay, will be removed by consulting the Appendix and the analytical index, to the preparation of which much time and labour have been devoted. Book Evolution and True Light Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and True Light Classic Reprint written by William W. Dunn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and True Light This lecture will contain the true version of Adam and Eve, who were the parents of the present generation. They possessed within themselves the germ of perpetuation, without which the race would have passed out of existence. God created these two persons self-willed and self-acting, and they obtained the germ of life, j and through them all nations of the earth have sprung. They violated the first edict given in this world, which was a prohibition edict.* This edict is given in Moses' History of the Beginning You may eat of all the fruit of the garden, except one tree. This tree stood in the middle of the garden, and was so described that it could not be mistaken. Eve-however, did eat of it when alone, after which she brought some to Adam, and he knowing the fruit, but being over-persuaded, did eat thereof. Now the curse fol lows the edict. The penalty was, The day you eat thereof you shall surely die. Now, did they die? The day here spoken of is the day of their perpetuation and that day has not yet ended, but will surely end when the great fire comes, but no man knoweth the hour of its coming, but it will come like a thief in the night. (we will speak more fully of the fire in the future.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Delphic Oracle, Its Early History, Influence and Fall Particularly interesting is the history of the influence of the Oracle in the domain of morality. Here there was a gradual ethical evolution from the old-time barbarous code which could sanction human sacrifice, and which took account merely of external morality, to the stage which took cognizance of mere acts of the will. Having traced the influence of the Oracle under these three heads - politics, religion and morality I have briefly indicated the causes which led to. The decline of the Oracle, and have endeavoured to show the stages in the waning of its influence till its extinction in Christian times. Book An Examination of Society from the Standpoint of Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Examination of Society from the Standpoint of Evolution Classic Reprint written by Louis Wallis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of Society From the Standpoint of Evolution The application of the main thesis to universal his tory involves an inquiry into the decline and fall of the earlier historic civilizations. The line of human progress has, indeed, passed up from prehistoric beginnings through the ancient oriental and classic worlds into modern western society. But the ancient civilizations, de spite their progress, did not endure; and the wrecks of many nations lie along the path of social development. Some of the later institutions of progressive society have issued from the struggles of earlier historic societies with the problem of their decline and fall; and if our inquiry should ignore the retrogressive aspects of human history we should be embarrassed in the treatment of these later institutions. Social development, as revealed by universal history, is not only a struggle for progress, but a struggle against retrogression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Magisterial . . . [A] rich portrait of ancient Egypt’s complex evolution over the course of three millenniums.”—Los Angeles Times NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • Publishers Weekly In this landmark volume, one of the world’s most renowned Egyptologists tells the epic story of this great civilization, from its birth as the first nation-state to its absorption into the Roman Empire. Drawing upon forty years of archaeological research, award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson takes us inside a tribal society with a pre-monetary economy and decadent, divine kings who ruled with all-too-recognizable human emotions. Here are the legendary leaders: Akhenaten, the “heretic king,” who with his wife Nefertiti brought about a revolution with a bold new religion; Tutankhamun, whose dazzling tomb would remain hidden for three millennia; and eleven pharaohs called Ramesses, the last of whom presided over the militarism, lawlessness, and corruption that caused a political and societal decline. Filled with new information and unique interpretations, The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt is a riveting and revelatory work of wild drama, bold spectacle, unforgettable characters, and sweeping history. “With a literary flair and a sense for a story well told, Mr. Wilkinson offers a highly readable, factually up-to-date account.”—The Wall Street Journal “[Wilkinson] writes with considerable verve. . . . [He] is nimble at conveying the sumptuous pageantry and cultural sophistication of pharaonic Egypt.”—The New York Times
