Book excerpt: Evil Lives in Blue Rock is the age-old tale of good vs. evil with a twist. Lucien Bluerock, a descendent of the town's fathers, lives in his gloomy mansion on a hill overlooking "his" town. Benjamin, his grandson, returns to Blue Rock, along with Agate Mitchell-a childhood friend-to attend his mother's funeral. They soon learn that the Riverman, Evil Spirit, Bad Tomanous-it has many names, but is known throughout history-the ANCIENT MENACE is loose, crawled up out of the sea where powerful shaman have kept it contained for many years. The atrocities begin upon the people of Blue Rock and members of the Quail River Reservation when the Evil Spirit inhabits the body of Jimmy Talltree, the local tribal policeman. It is all the chosen few with "the power" can do to force the Evil One back into the sea from whence it came, using ancient rites and ceremonies handed down through the generations. Only the gods know if they have succeeded in their endeavor to rid this earth of the anti-Christ.

Book The Logic of Vegetarianism

Download or read book The Logic of Vegetarianism written by Henry Stephens Salt and published by Kessinger Publishing. This book was released on 1906 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Logic of Vegetarianism: Essays and Dialogues is a book written by Henry Stephens Salt in 1906. It is a collection of essays and dialogues that argue for the ethical and practical reasons for adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part discussing the moral and philosophical arguments for vegetarianism, while the second part focuses on the practical aspects of vegetarianism, such as nutrition and cooking.Throughout the book, Salt argues that the consumption of meat is not only unnecessary for human health, but also morally wrong due to the cruelty and exploitation involved in animal agriculture. He also critiques the arguments made by those who defend meat-eating, such as the idea that humans are biologically designed to eat meat, and argues that vegetarianism is a more rational and compassionate choice. The dialogues in the book are written in a conversational style, with Salt engaging in debates with fictional characters who represent different perspectives on vegetarianism. These dialogues provide a lively and engaging way to explore the various arguments for and against vegetarianism.Overall, The Logic of Vegetarianism is a thought-provoking and persuasive book that continues to be relevant today, as more and more people are turning to vegetarianism for ethical, environmental, and health reasons. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Book Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life

Download or read book Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life written by Steve Almond and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drooling fanatic, n. 1. One who drools in the presence of beloved rock stars. 2. Any of a genus of rock-and-roll wannabes/geeks who walk around with songs constantly ringing in their ears, own more than 3,000 albums, and fall in love with at least one record per week. With a life that’s spanned the phonographic era and the digital age, Steve Almond lives to Rawk. Like you, he’s secretly longed to live the life of a rock star, complete with insane talent, famous friends, and hotel rooms to be trashed. Also like you, he’s content (sort of) to live the life of a rabid fan, one who has converted his unrequited desires into a (sort of) noble obsession. Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life traces Almond’s passion from his earliest (and most wretched) rock criticism to his eventual discovery of a music-crazed soul mate and their subsequent production of two little superfans. Along the way, Almond reflects on the delusional power of songs, the awkward mating habits of drooling fanatics, and why Depression Songs actually make us feel so much better. The book also includes: • sometimes drunken interviews with America’s finest songwriters • a recap of the author’s terrifying visit to Graceland while stoned • a vigorous and credibility-shattering endorsement of Styx’s Paradise Theater • recommendations you will often choose to ignore • a reluctant exegesis of the Toto song “Africa” • obnoxious lists sure to piss off rock critics But wait, there’s more. Readers will also be able to listen to a special free mix designed by the author, available online at www.stevenalmond.com, for the express purpose of eliciting your drool. For those about to rock—we salute you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil Lives Next Door is a gripping story based on true events that took place during a difficult time in my life. My father and I traveled to Florida to visit my sister, thinking it would be a nice trip to a pleasant city. However, my father's health suddenly deteriorated, and amidst this turmoil, I began to fear the increasingly erratic and violent behavior of my neighbor and supposed friend, Edward Allen Covington. Little did I know, he was the very man responsible for what has become known as the Mother's Day Massacre. It wasn't until a year ago that I discovered the horrifying truth about Covington's actions. While reports stated his ex-wife was the only survivor, I soon realized that I was his first survivor. Even now, I am haunted by the memories and still live in fear of that man.
