Book excerpt: A six-day series of interviews between Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel and French journalist Michaël de Saint Cheron, Evil and Exile probes some of the most crucial and pressing issues facing humankind today. Having survived the unspeakable evil of the Holocaust, Wiesel remained silent for ten years before dedicating his life to the memory of this tragedy, witnessing tirelessly to remind an often indifferent world of its potential for self-destruction. Wiesel offers wise counsel in this volume concerning evil and suffering, life and death, chance and circumstance. Moreover, the dialogue evokes candid and often surprising responses by Wiesel on the Palestinian problem, Judeo-Christian relations, recent changes in the Soviet Union as well as insights into writers such as Kafka, Malraux, Mauriac, and Unamuno.

Book Exile Old Testament Jewish and Christian Conceptions

Download or read book Exile Old Testament Jewish and Christian Conceptions written by Bruce D. Chilton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exiles of Israel and Judah cast a long shadow over the biblical text and the whole subsequent history of Judaism. Scholars have long recognized the importance of the theme of exile for the Hebrew Bible. Indeed, critical study of the Old Testament has, at least since Wellhausen, been dominated by the Babylonian exile of Judah. In 586 BC, several factors, including the destruction of Jerusalem, the cessation of the sacrificial cult and of the monarchy, and the experience of the exile, began to cause a transformation of Israelite religion which supplied the contours of the larger Judaic framework within which the various forms of Judaism, including the early Christian movement, developed. Given the importance of the exile to the development of Judaism and Christianity even to the present day, this volume delves into the conceptions of exile which contributed to that development during the formative period.

Book Exile Me

  • Pages : 202 pages

Book excerpt: Seyed Morteza Hamidzadeh was born, raised, and lives in a world completely different than the one we know. But he is no different than any of us. Yes, he must face death, insecurity, and disorder on a daily basis, but that doesn't make him any less human or real than the rest of us. Hamidzadeh was born to be a soldier. Not a soldier of hate or war mind you, but a soldier of the heart. At the center of the so-called "Axis Of Evil" lie stories of life and love more compelling than any western rhetoric that we have strained to swallow. 'Exile Me' is a collection of 34 poems presented in both English and Farsi. These poems act as a living conscience of the times with verse about ISIS, occupying soldiers, and the emotions of wartime.

Book The Exile

  • Author : Adrian Levy
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2017-05-23
  • ISBN : 1620409852
  • Pages : 641 pages

Download or read book The Exile written by Adrian Levy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Startling and scandalous, this is an intimate insider's story of Osama bin Laden's retinue in the ten years after 9/11, a family in flight and at war. From September 11, 2001 to May 2, 2011, Osama Bin Laden evaded intelligence services and special forces units, drones and hunter killer squads. The Exile tells the extraordinary inside story of that decade through the eyes of those who witnessed it: bin Laden's four wives and many children, his deputies and military strategists, his spiritual advisor, the CIA, Pakistan's ISI, and many others who have never before told their stories. Investigative journalists Cathy Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy gained unique access to Osama bin Laden's inner circle, and they recount the flight of Al Qaeda's forces and bin Laden's innocent family members, the gradual formation of ISIS by bin Laden's lieutenants, and bin Laden's rising paranoia and eroding control over his organization. They also reveal that the Bush White House knew the whereabouts of bin Laden's family and Al Qaeda's military and religious leaders, but rejected opportunities to capture them, pursuing war in the Persian Gulf instead, and offer insights into how Al Qaeda will attempt to regenerate itself in the coming years. While we think we know what happened in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011, we know little about the wilderness years that led to that shocking event. As authoritative in its scope and detail as it is propuslively readable, The Exile is a landmark work of investigation and reporting.

Years have passed since the demon Tarrik and his master, the sorcerer Ren, destroyed the servants of Samal and suppressed the very essence of the vile lord. The cost was greater than even a demon could have imagined. But in the realms of demons and humans, no evil can be fully controlled, and no one's true fate can be foretold. Including Tarrik's. He's been summoned once more, now by the vengeful Linriel, who's fallen in with one of Samal's ravaged survivors. Linriel takes Tarrik, bound again to serve, on a journey to the harsh southern lands to find the source of Ren's coveted powers, and there they discover a part of Tarrik's past he thought had been lost forever. As old bindings more powerful than sorcery fetter him, Tarrik is drawn into an obsessive and insane mission to erase the demon lord Samal from existence forever. And only if he succeeds will he at last be freed from exile. As old threats are reborn, he must decide what sacrifices he's willing to make and what risks he's willing to take on the unforgiving road to redemption.

Book Exile

  • Author : Belén Fernández
  • Publisher : OR Books
  • Release : 2019-06-27
  • ISBN : 1682191893
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Exile written by Belén Fernández and published by OR Books. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Che Guevara left Argentina at 22. At 21, Belén Fernández left the U.S. and didn’t look back. Alone, far off the beaten path in places like Syria and Tajikistan, she reflects on what it means to be an American in a largely American-made mess of a world. After growing up in Washington, D.C. and Texas, and then attending Columbia University in New York, Belén Fernández ended up in a state of self-imposed exile from the United States. From trekking—through Europe, the Middle East, Morocco, and Latin America—to packing avocados in southern Spain, to close encounters with a variety of unpredictable men, to witnessing the violent aftermath of the 2009 coup in Honduras, the international travel allowed her by an American passport has, ironically, given her a direct view of the devastating consequences of U.S. machinations worldwide. For some years Fernández survived thanks to the generosity of strangers who picked her up hitchhiking, fed her, and offered accommodations; then she discovered people would pay her for her powerful, unfiltered journalism, enabling—as of the present moment—continued survival. In just a few short years of publishing her observations on world politics and writing from places as varied as Lebanon, Italy, Uzbekistan, Syria, Mexico, Turkey, Honduras, and Iran, Belén Fernández has established herself as a one of the most trenchant observers of America’s interventions around the world, following in the footsteps of great foreign correspondents such as Martha Gellhorn and Susan Sontag.
