Book excerpt: This study investigates a long-run relationship between agriculture and manufacturing industry output in Nigeria using a time series data from 1982 to 2015. The study employs the Granger causality test, Vector Error Correction Model and co-integration technique to estimate the interdependence between agricultural productivity and manufacturing industry output in the light of selected macroeconomic variables. Empirical evidence from Granger Causality test reveals a bidirectional relationship between agricultural productivity and manufacturing industry output. Although, a positive relationship exists between agriculture and manufacturing industry output in the short and long-run estimates, a long-run divergence from the vector error correction model indicates that variations in agricultural productivity are not restored to equilibrium given the behavior of explanatory variables, which implies that macroeconomic conditions distort the linkage. A major policy implication is that developing countries need to have a measure of macroeconomic stability for a strong agriculture and manufacturing industry linkage to foster sustainable economic development.

It is not only seen as a key to poverty reduction and vehicle for promoting equity, fairness and social justice but also helps to supply the essential economic ingredients which are necessary condition for sustained economic growth. Thus, enhancing effective investment on the agricultural sector in order to boost its capacity has been a tenet of growth and development strategies of most developed countries. The basic objective of this work is to carry out an empirical investigation on the effect of agricultural productivity on economic growth in Nigeria, using annual time series data from 2000 to 2014. The paper employs the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method. Empirical results indicate that there is, indeed a long-run relationship between agricultural productivity and economic growth. All the variables including, the GDP contribution of the agricultural sector, gross expenditure on agriculture and gross access to bank (agricultural) loans/credit had the expected positive signs in the Nigerian economy and were also tested in relation to economic growth by using the Pearson correlation co-efficient. The findings have a strong implication on agricultural policy in Nigeria. The study suggest that a concerted effort should be made by policy makers to concentrate on the productivity of the agricultural sector in order to boost its production capacity, which would enhance productivity of output and in turn stimulates economic growth.

Book excerpt: The study empirically examines the impact of agricultural output on per capita income in Nigeria for a period of thirty two years (1980 to 2015). The study employs multiple Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) analysis for the estimation process, unit root test for stationarity variables, co-integration analysis for long-run equilibrium relationship and error correction model to ascertain the short run effect of the variables. The variables used in the model were per capita income which is the dependent variable, while agricultural output (AGQ), index of industrial production (INDPR), agricultural exports (EXP) and investment (INV) served as the independent or explanatory variables.The results from the analysis showed that agricultural output (AGQ) and agricultural exports (EXP) have a significant positive relationship with per capita income. Index of industrial production (INDPR) and that of investment (INV) have insignificant positive relationships with Per capita income (PCI).The study recommends among others that since agricultural output, not just mere exports that boosts per capita income, relevant authorities should consider measures of increasing the share of agricultural output in Nigeria by providing the farmers with high yielding varieties of crops and teaching them better farming and preservation methods through a revamped agricultural extension system. This way, more farmers will be able to produce products that are viable in the international market and thus improve their living standards and per capita income in general.

Following China’s domestic economic transformation and its growing outward investments in the developing world, we seek to understand how Chinese investment in Africa, particularly in manufacturing, may help to foster industrialization and in turn the structural transformation of African economies. We focus on Chinese investments and partnerships in Nigeria, a salient destination for Chinese manufacturing foreign direct investment in Africa, and examine the potential mechanisms of technology transfer that might catalyze such transformation. We find some small but significant cases of potential technology transfer, particularly through technical partnerships between firms. However, the future potential of such mechanisms will depend on the initiative of Nigerian actors to leverage Chinese investment to their interest.

It is based on a survey of more than 9,000 farmers in 11 countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The study uses a Ricardian cross-sectional approach in which net revenue is regressed on climate, water flow, soil, and economic variables. The results show that net revenues fall as precipitation falls or as temperatures warm across all the surveyed farms. In addition to examining all farms together, the study examined dryland and irrigated farms separately. Dryland farms are especially climate sensitive. Irrigated farms have a positive immediate response to warming because they are located in relatively cool parts of Africa. The study also examined some simple climate scenarios to see how Africa would respond to climate change. These uniform scenarios assume that only one aspect of climate changes and the change is uniform across all of Africa. In addition, the study examined three climate change scenarios from Atmospheric Oceanic General Circulation Models. These scenarios predicted changes in climate in each country over time. Not all countries are equally vulnerable to climate change. First, the climate scenarios predict different temperature and precipitation changes in each country. Second, it is also important whether a country is already hot and dry. Third, the extent to which farms are irrigated is also important.

It presents case studies on policies to attract foreign investment in agriculture and their impacts on national economic development in selected countries in Africa, Asian and Latin America.
