Book excerpt: A delicious treat for fans of Ellie Alexander and Lucy Burdette, life at the bakery heats up when an éclair recipe falls into the wrong hands—and murder is the deadly frosting. Marci Beaucoup is loving life as the owner of a French-style patisserie in the small town of Paris, Kentucky—but when newcomer Ellen Charles arrives, Marci’s sweet surroundings suddenly turn darker than a mouthful of baker’s chocolate. First, Ellen accuses Marci of stealing her éclair recipe. Then, Ellen is found dead in a dumpster behind the bakery, a box of éclairs clutched in her cold hands. Naturally, Marci becomes suspect number one. And when she starts receiving threatening messages written in French, it’s clear that someone is out to put the final ganache on her business—and maybe, her life. Detective Maverick Malone has loved Marci since grade school, and doesn’t believe she’s capable of murder. But he can’t ignore that the evidence against her is mounting. Ellen and Marci had been seen in an argument the day before the murder. The body was found behind Marci’s shop. And an anonymous source claims to have overheard Marci threaten Ellen. But there are other potential suspects as well. Ellen’s best friend, Marianne Spencer, was secretly stewing over a cookbook that Ellen was working on, contending that the recipes were really hers. Steamy Beans Coffee Shop owner Leanne James had a confrontation with Ellen as well. And an enigmatic figure named Matthew Dean has followed Ellen to Paris from her former hometown of Louisville, claiming that she owes him money and determined to get it at any cost. But who’s sending Marci the threatening letters? Someone who speaks and writes French—but no one seems to have that particular je ne sais quoi. All fingers are pointing at Marci, and if she can’t find the real killer, she could be on her way to prison—or iced for good.

Beginning with a new approach to the individuation of acts, it delineates the relationships between basic and non-basic acts and uses these relationships in the definition of ability and intentional action. The author exhibits the central role of wants and beliefs in the causation of acts and in the analysis of the concept of action. Professor Goldman suggests answers to fundamental questions about acts, and develops a set of ideas and principles that can be used in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language, ethics, and other fields, including the behavioral sciences. Download or read book Messiaen s Final Works written by Christopher Dingle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) completed the vast opera Saint Frans dAssise in 1983, he was mentally and physically exhausted, and believed that this monumental work would be his final compositional statement. In fact, he completed seven further works, and these form the focus of the present study. Christopher Dingle suggests that, following the crisis provoked by the opera, Messiaen's music underwent a discernible change in style. He examines these seven works to identify characteristics of the composer's music, in particular an often overlooked aspect of his technique: harmony. Part I of the book begins with a brief historical survey before discussing Saint Frans dAssise as the work which defines everything that follows. Part II examines the series of miniatures that came after the opera and their links with lairs sur lAu-Del., his final masterpiece. lairs forms the subject of Part III of the book. Each movement is analysed in turn, before the work is considered as a whole and its hidden structure and motivic cohesion is revealed. Finally, Part IV considers the incomplete Concert and key stylistic features of the works of Messiaens final years.
