Book Evidence for Direct Stimulation of the Mammalian Nervous System with Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Evidence for Direct Stimulation of the Mammalian Nervous System with Ionizing Radiation written by E. L. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a behavioral study designed to detect the most immediate reaction of the intact nervous system to ionizing radiation, rats were exposed while asleep to X rays (250 kvp), and measurements of behavioral arousal and heart rate were made to indicate activation of the central nervous system. A transitory behavioral arousal was exhibited within 12 seconds at an exposure rate of 0.25 r/second. At a higher dose rate of 1.9 r/second this initial reaction increased in scope and by 30 seconds included sub-cortical activation as well, as indicated by a heart rate response. These reactions depended upon the rate of exposure and not upon the total dose. In blinded animals, exposure at the high intensity evoked both the behavioral arousal and the heart rate response. This indicates that CNS activation cannot be attributed to the direct effect of radiation on the visual receptor system. Although radiation may act as a stimulus to the CNS through other sensory systems it was also suggested that the nervous system itself is directly sensitive to ionizing radiation.

  • Author : T. D. Luckey
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2020-10-28

Download or read book Radiation Hormesis written by T. D. Luckey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation Hormesis presents the only critical review of the effects of whole-body exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation in animals. This is a "must read" book for radiobiologists, health-conscious individuals, and serious environmentalists. Topics discussed include our radiation environment, radiation hormesis in cancer mortality, growth and development, reproduction and mutation, immunity, and cancer. Data is presented that indicates that low doses of ionizing radiation may actually be beneficial to human health. This information could invalidate the "zero thesis" and linear models used by most regulatory agencies. The implications regarding eliminating linear models and accepting radiation hormesis are also discussed.

Book Olfaction

  • Author : Lloyd M. Beidler
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642651267

Download or read book Olfaction written by Lloyd M. Beidler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olfaction is involved intimately in two of the most basic functions of animals: food intake and reproduction. There are also many other involvements of olfaction in animal behavior, not the least being communication. The authors of this volume have collected and evaluated the comparative anatomy, electron microscopy, electrophysiology, genetics, psychology, chemistry, and biophysics of the olfactory system and then indicated their roles in animal behavior. The importance of olfaction in the everyday life of an animal is just being realized fully and recent years have brought forth a great surge of research in this area. The diverse dis ciplines that contribute to our understanding of olfaction make the development of this volume rewarding for those working in this field. The olfactory system's very high sensitivity and its great power of molecular discrimination interests many chemists and physicists. Data from the study of both vertebrates and insects show that only one molecule of certain odors is necessary to stimulate a single olfactory receptor! The underlying physicochemical events are not yet understood. Also, many mammals can discriminate quickly the difference between two odors of similar structure. Thus the olfactory epithelium and the more centrally located neural components present the ultimate in chemical detection and analysis by a biological system. The principles involved are probably common to those of many other organs.

Book Pharmacological and Biophysical Agents and Behavior

Download or read book Pharmacological and Biophysical Agents and Behavior written by Ernest Furchtgott and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacological and Biophysical Agents and Behavior is a compendium of papers that discusses the effects of radiations, drugs, or other similar agents on human behavior. This collection is a reference guide to the analysis of behavioral effects of other agents such as those produced by radiation, hypoxia. or thermal stress. One paper reviews the effects of material or corpuscular radiations and electromagnetic radiations that even low doses occurring during the prenatal stage can result in permanent behavioral deficits. Another paper notes that any hazards resulting from the increasing use of microwave generating devices should be investigated as the possibility of such subtle hazards can affect learning, emotional, and personality behaviors. One paper analyzes the chronic effects of thermal stress on behavior, as well as those of convulsants (strychnine) and general stimulants (caffeine). The book also reviews the effects of sympathomimetic amines on emotional behavior, sleep, activity, food intake, and temperature regulation. This compendium can prove beneficial for pharmacologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, students, and professors in related disciplines.
