Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book, Thomas Chalmers, (1780 -1847) was a Scottish minister, professor of theology, and a leader of both the Church of Scotland and of the Free Church of Scotland. He has been called "Scotland's greatest nineteenth-century churchman."Rev. Chalmers presents a history of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and delegated Messenger of Heaven -his life, his doctrines, and his miracles. In his development of the evidences of Christianity, he lays the main stress of his appeal upon the external, or the historical evidences. He considers the Scripture-record first of all merely as supported by the ordinary tests of historical truth. The work is divided into ten chapters: "On the Principles of Historical Evidence and their Application to the Question of the Truth of Christianity.-On the Authenticity of the different Books of the New Testament.-On the Internal Marks of Truth and Honesty to be found in the New Testament.-On the Testimony of the original Witnesses to the Truth of the Gospel Narrative.-On the Testimony of subsequent Witnesses.-Remarks on the Argument from Prophecy-Remarks on the Scepticism of Geologists. ─ On the internal Evidence, and the Objections of Deistical Infidels. ─ On the Way of proposing the Argument to Atheistical Infidels. ─ On the supreme Authority of Revelation."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all areas of scientific endeavor, the twentieth-century mind has repeatedly searched for a rule or principle by which the truth or falsehood of a statement may be judged. The first question of the scientist is: ÒHow do I ÒknowÓ such and such to be the case?Ó In theology, too, increasing interest has been focused on the sources of truth; the Christian theologian asks, ÒWhy should I accept this doctrine or that moral precept? By what authority do I make the claim that Christ is God?Ó In this compact volume Dr. Shelley shows how the early church encountered and answered the questions surrounding doctrinal authority. For the sake of the layperson, Dr. Shelley introduces each of the early church Fathers in turn before examining his particular contribution to the emerging pattern of authority. The author has included an appendix, ÒThe Work of the Holy Spirit,Ó as well as a selected bibliography, and indices of names and subjects.

Download or read book Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation written by Pope Paul VI. and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document's purpose is to spell out the Church's understanding of the nature of revelation--the process whereby God communicates with human beings. It touches upon questions about Scripture, tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church. The major concern of the document is to proclaim a Catholic understanding of the Bible as the "word of God." Key elements include: Trinitarian structure, roles of apostles and bishops, and biblical reading in a historical context.
