Download or read book Nature Across Cultures written by Helaine Selin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature Across Cultures: Views of Nature and the Environment in Non-Western Cultures consists of about 25 essays dealing with the environmental knowledge and beliefs of cultures outside of the United States and Europe. In addition to articles surveying Islamic, Chinese, Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indian, Thai, and Andean views of nature and the environment, among others, the book includes essays on Environmentalism and Images of the Other, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Worldviews and Ecology, Rethinking the Western/non-Western Divide, and Landscape, Nature, and Culture. The essays address the connections between nature and culture and relate the environmental practices to the cultures which produced them. Each essay contains an extensive bibliography. Because the geographic range is global, the book fills a gap in both environmental history and in cultural studies. It should find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars, as well as in libraries serving those groups.

Book Holding Their Ground

Download or read book Holding Their Ground written by Alain Durand-Lasserve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security of land tenure for the urban poor is now a major problem for developing cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This book presents and analyzes the main conclusions of a comparative research programme on land tenure issues. It looks at how solutions can be found and implemented to respond to the demands and needs of the majority of squatters and informal settlements, and analyzes how urban stakeholders, with different social, legal and economic constraints, find innovative and flexible solutions. The book is intended to fill a gap in the literature on comparative research on tenure policies and should be useful to researchers and professionals involved in defining and instigating tenure upgrading policies and programmes.

Book Access to Environmental Justice A Comparative Study

Download or read book Access to Environmental Justice A Comparative Study written by Andrew Harding and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is commonly asserted that enhanced citizen participation results in better environmental policy and improved enforcement of environmental standards, this hypothesis has rarely been subject to testing on a comparative basis. The contributors to this book set out to study the extent to which citizens can and do exert influence over their urban environments through the legal (and extra-legal) 'gateways' in eleven countries spanning several continents as well as different climates, levels and type of economic development, and national legal and constitutional systems, as well as exhibiting a different set of environmental problems. One interviewee questioned about access to environmental justice, dryly remarked that in his city there was no environment, no justice and no access to either. Yet this view, as will be seen, requires to be nuanced. While few people will be surprised by the finding that legal gateways to environmental justice are largely ineffective, the reasons for this are revealing; but also the richness of detail and the comparisons between the different countries, and also the positive aspects which surfaced in several instances, were indeed both encouraging and sometimes surprising. This book presents the first comparative survey of access to environmental justice, and will be of considerable use to lawyers, policy-makers, activists and scholars who are concerned with the environmental issues which so profoundly affect and afflict our habitat and conditions of social justice throughout the world.

Book Seeking Shelter on the Pacific Rim

Download or read book Seeking Shelter on the Pacific Rim written by Gary Dymski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book analyzes the changes that financial globalization is bringing about in the housing and home-finance markets of the United States, Japan, and South Korea, with special attention to the circumstances of women in obtaining housing, credit, and personal security. The book's focus on changes in the residential and housing finance markets serves as a window for an integrated examination of how the liberalization of national financial markets has affected the relationship among all players in each of the three economies - government, markets, and individual citizens. Through this examination Housing Finance Futures develops a new critical response to economic globalization based on a groundbreaking concept, the social efficiency of policy and market shifts.
