Book excerpt: Established in 1688, Evesham Township was settled by members of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, who found it to be a place where they could worship freely. Many homes of the original settlers as well as Quaker meetinghouses still stand today. Evesham is considered one of the crossroads of the Revolutionary War. One of the earliest industries was the mining of marl a greensand clay that was used as a fertilizer. From its beginning, however, Evesham s main industry was agriculture. Using vintage photographs and historic information, Evesham Township explores the township s transformation into the suburban community it is today. These photographs illustrate how the early settlers and those who followed lived and worked and show how the area progressed and grew. The township has seen tremendous growth but is still only about one quarter of its original size. Images and captions show fertile farmland becoming neighborhoods, attracting many people to Evesham and stimulating growth."

Book excerpt: 'Evesham' is a non-fiction book written and illustrated by Edmund Hort New. It is about his birthplace, Evesham, a market town and parish in the Wychavon district of Worcestershire, in the West Midlands region of England. It is located roughly equidistant between Worcester, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon. It lies within the Vale of Evesham, an area comprising the flood plain of the River Avon, which has been renowned for market gardening. The town was founded around an 8th-century abbey, one of the largest in Europe, which was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, with only Abbot Lichfield's Bell Tower remaining. During the 13th century, one of the two main battles of England's Second Barons' War took place near the town, marking the victory of Prince Edward, who later became King Edward I; this was the Battle of Evesham.

Book The Church and Vale of Evesham 700 1215

Download or read book The Church and Vale of Evesham 700 1215 written by D. C. Cox and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In c.701, a minster was founded in the lower Avon Valley on a deserted promontory called Evesham. Over the next five hundred years it became a Benedictine abbey and turned the Vale of Evesham into a federation of Christian communities. A landscape of scattered farms grew into one of open fields and villages, manor houses and chapels. Evesham itself developed into a town, and the abbots played a role in the affairs of the kingdom. But individual contemplation and prayer within the abbey were compromised by its corporate aspirations. As Evesham abbey waxed ever grander, exerting a national influence, it became a ready patron of the arts but had less time for private spirituality. The story ends badly in the prolonged scandal of Abbot Norreis, a libertine whose appetites caused religion to collapse at Evesham before his own sudden downfall. This book integrates the evidence of archaeology, maps, and documents in a continuous narrative that pays as much attention to religious and cultural life as to institutional and economic matters. It provides a complete survey over one of the most important and wealthy Benedictine abbeys and its landscape, a stage on which was enacted the tense interplay of lordship and prayer."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the crescendo of the Second Barons' War were the battles of Lewes and Evesham. It was an era of high drama and intrigue, as tensions between crown and aristocracy had boiled over and a civil war erupted that would shape the future of English government. In this detailed study, Richard Brooks unravels the remarkable events of the battles of Lewes and Evesham, revealing the unusually tactical nature of the fighting, in sharp contrast to most medieval conflicts which were habitually settled by burning and ravaging. At Lewes, Simon de Montfort, the powerful renegade leader of the Baronial faction, won a vital victory, smashing the Royalist forces and capturing Henry III and Prince Edward. Edward escaped, however, to lead the Royalist armies to a crushing victory just a year later at Evesham. Using full colour illustrations, bird's-eye views and detailed maps to generate an arresting visual perspective of the fighting, this book tells the full story of the battles of Lewes and Evesham, the only pitched battles to be fought by English armies in the mid-13th century.
