Book excerpt: From John David Anderson, acclaimed author of Posted, comes a ghost story pulled from the darkest shadows of middle school. Riley Flynn is alone. It feels like she’s been on her own since sixth grade, when her best friend, Emily, ditched her for the cool girls. Girls who don’t like Riley. Girls who decide one day to lock her in the science closet after hours, after everyone else has gone home. When Riley is finally able to escape, however, she finds that her horror story is only just beginning. All the school doors are locked, the windows won’t budge, the phones are dead, and the lights aren't working. Through halls lit only by the narrow beam of her flashlight, Riley roams the building, seeking a way out, an answer, an explanation. And as she does, she starts to suspect she isn’t alone after all. While she’s always liked a good scary story, Riley knows there is no such thing as ghosts. But what else could explain the things happening in the school, the haunting force that seems to lurk in every shadow, around every corner? As she tries to find answers, she starts reliving moments that brought her to this night. Moments from her own life...and a life that is not her own.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice A comprehensive, authoritative and readable history of the evolution of the ghost in the west, examining the behavior of the subject in its preferred environment: the stories we tell each other. "Roger Clarke tells this [the story that inspired Henry James' The Turn of the Screw] and many other gloriously weird stories with real verve, and also a kind of narrative authority that tends to constrain the skeptical voice within... [An] erudite and richly entertaining book." —New York Times Book Review No matter how rationally we order our lives, few of us are completely immune to the suggestion of the uncanny and the fear of the dark. What explains sightings of ghosts? Why do they fascinate us? What exactly do those who have been haunted see? What did they believe? And what proof is there? Taking us through the key hauntings that have obsessed the world, from the true events that inspired Henry James's classic The Turn of the Screw right up to the present day, Roger Clarke unfolds a story of class conflict, charlatans, and true believers. The cast list includes royalty and prime ministers, Samuel Johnson, John Wesley, Harry Houdini, and Adolf Hitler. The chapters cover everything from religious beliefs to modern developments in neuroscience, the medicine of ghosts, and the technology of ghosthunting. There are haunted WWI submarines, houses so blighted by phantoms they are demolished, a seventeenth-century Ghost Hunter General, and the emergence of the Victorian flash mob, where hundreds would stand outside rumored sites all night waiting to catch sight of a dead face at a window. Written as grippingly as the best ghost fiction, A Natural History of Ghosts takes us on an unforgettable hunt through the most haunted places of the last five hundred years and our longing to believe.

Book excerpt: Shirley Jackson Award Finalist: A “deeply compelling” literary thriller about two siblings and a man who could be the brother they never knew (George Saunders, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Lincoln in the Bardo). Lydia and Lucas Moore are in their late twenties when a stranger enters their small world on Wolf Island. Lydia, the responsible sister, has cared for her pathologically shy brother ever since their mom’s death a decade before. They live, comfortable yet confined, in their family house by the sea, shadowed by events from their childhood. When Lydia sees the stranger step off the ferry, she feels an immediate connection. Lucas is convinced the man, Cole Anthony, is the reincarnation of their brother, who died as a baby. Cole knows their mannerisms, their home, the topography of the island—what else could that mean? Lydia is doubtful, but she can’t deny she is drawn to his magnetism, his energy, and his warmth. To discover the truth about Cole, Lydia must finally face her anxiety about leaving the island, and summon the strength to challenge Cole’s grip on her family’s past and her brother. “One of the best literary thrillers you’ll read this year.” —Cosmopolitan “Gault finesses the mechanics of her puzzle . . . an intriguing subtext about the infantilizing hazards of familial devotion.” —The New York Times Book Review “Taut, evocative . . . shows us what binds us to places and what sets us free.” —The Boston Globe “Quietly chilling . . . A suspenseful meditation on the many ways in which the past, consciously or not, shapes the present, the novel flirts with fantasy but ultimately stays grounded in the elemental realities of wind, tides, and the eroding foundations of memory.” —Booklist “Reminds me of Karen Russell, Donna Tartt, Gillian Flynn, and Marilynne Robinson all at once . . . a monster debut.” —Daniel Torday, author of The Last Flight of Poxl West Longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize

Book The Beginner s Guide to Ghosts and Hauntings

Download or read book The Beginner s Guide to Ghosts and Hauntings written by Lisa Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you have ever wanted to know about ghosts but didn't want to ask. Ghosts: A bit of a strange topic. But if you have picked up this book it is because you believe there is more to life (and death) than the things we can see, or the things that can be proven by science. Over the centuries literally thousands of people have claimed to see ghostly apparitions that bear a resemblance to a person who had lived life to some degree or another. If you go through the Internet you will find countless stories of people alive today who have seen a ghost, or who believes in ghosts, or wants to know more about them. This book is for the third group of people - those of you who want to learn more about this mystical, yet strangely logical phenomenon. At this point in the game it doesn't matter to me if you believe in ghosts or not. I believe in what I can see, hear and experience; and I have been fortunate enough to have seen, heard and experienced ghosts at different times, in different places and at different ages in my own life. Ghosts fascinate me for two reasons. Firstly they provide a link to the past - to my ancestors in some cases, and to the ancestors of others. The second reason I am fascinated with ghosts is because they provide us with one of the most tangible examples of life after death. While many of us have faith in different religions and beliefs; ghosts transcend both religions and belief and actually provide a semi-scientific platform, which we can use to investigate what happens to us when we die. For those of us that believe in the infinite nature of energy, ghosts are simply an extension of the fact that energy itself cannot cease to exist but instead can and does change form. Many people fear ghosts; a fact that is borne out by the countless programs there are on television and in films where death is to be feared along with apparitions, poltergeists and other similar elements. Karl Marx would consider this fear a result of man being faced with his own mortality, but for me personally I see the fear manifested in popular media as a way of getting more people to watch an otherwise lacklustre program/film because it feeds into a form of mass hysteria. I can tell, simply because you have purchased this book, that you think more rationally than the people who actually participate in those programs, and you are looking for some answers. You might be a person who thinks they have seen a ghost but are not sure about it: you could be a person that lives with a ghostly boarder and is hoping to get some information on how to either co-exist with the entity, or information on how to get the ghost to move on. This book will be able to help you with those things.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2015 BRAM STOKER AWARD FOR SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN A NOVEL A chilling thriller that brilliantly blends psychological suspense and supernatural horror, reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents’ despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie’s descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts’ plight. With John, Marjorie’s father, out of work for more than a year and the medical bills looming, the family agrees to be filmed, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the shocking incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend. Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie’s younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long ago events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories that clash with what was broadcast on television begin to surface—and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising vexing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.
