Book Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers

Download or read book Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers written by Abdullahi Osman El-Tom and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Meals and Migrating Mothers: Culinary cultures, diasporic dishes and familial foodways explores the complex interplay between the important global issues of food, families, and migration. We have an introduction and twelve additional chapters which we have organised into three parts: Part I Moving Meals, Markets and Migrant Mothers; Part II Migrating Mothers Performing Identity through Moving Meals; Part III Meanings and Experiences of Migrant Maternal Meals. Although these parts are not mutually exclusive, they are meant to emphasize socio-cultural and economic considerations of migration (Part I), the food itself (Part II), and families (Part III). We have a wide geographic representation, including Europe (Ireland and France), the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Korea. In addition, we have contributors from all stages of career, including full professors, as well recent doctoral graduates. Overall the contributions are interdisciplinary, and therefore use a variety of methodologies, although most make use of traditional social sciences methods, including interviews and ethnographic observations.

Bradley, MSSA, LSW, director of foster care, Rosemont Center, Columbus, Ohio “This book effectively lays the groundwork for young women to realize their spiritual, emotional and physical worth … readers enter a step-by-step journey that challenges them to not only walk away from negative thought patterns, but also adopt an ‘I can do anything’ mindset.” – Tabitha Winesberry, MA, clinical psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Azusa Pacific University

Preserving recipes like Marinated Baby Artichokes are followed by recipes for dishes like Marinated Artichoke and Ricotta Pie and Sausages with Marinated Baby Artichokes; a Three-Citrus Marmelade recipe is followed by recipes for Chicken Wings Baked with Three-Citrus Marmelade, Shrmp with Three-Citrus Marmelade and Lime, and Crepes with Three-Citrus Marmelade, and so on. In this book, Eugenia Bone, a New Yorker whose Italian father was forever canning everything from olives to tuna, describes the art of preserving in an accessible way. Though she covers traditional water bath and pressure canning in detail, she also shares simpler methods that allow you to preserve foods using low-tech options like oil-preserving, curing, and freezing. Bone clearly explains each technique so that you can rest assured your food is stable and safe. "Preserving Meat, Dairy, and Eggs", "Preserving Fruits, Nuts, and Seeds", and "Preserving Vegetables, Grains, and Beans" have been compiled to give you over 300 pages of information. There are a lot of books about food preserving but what sets this book apart is that each food and all the methods for preserving that particular food are described in their own chapters. Turn to the table of contents and find the food you want to preserve, then turn to that page and all the ways you can preserve that particular food are found in that chapter. Or select a method of food preserving that you would like to learn about and find the information you need in that chapter. The book is divided into two sections. Part one is an explanation of all the preserving methods, how to do them, and what you'll need: Canning, Dehydrating, Freezing, Salting, Brining, Sugaring, Smoking, Pickling, and Fermenting, as well as some not-as-often heard of ones as Ash, Oil, and Honey for preservation. Part two begins with meat and works it's way through dairy, eggs, fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetables, grains, and beans. All the methods that work well with each food are explained along with directions for the preparation and processing of that food. There is also information about what doesn't work and why. The authors live on opposite ends of the country (North and South) and bring some of their own regional flavor to the books, making this an interesting as well as informative book.

Book Preservation is Overtaking Us

Download or read book Preservation is Overtaking Us written by Rem Koolhaas and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koolhaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas' thinking on preservation, including his practice's entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas' readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a working manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA's work from within the discipline of preservation.
