The breed is commonly known as the 'Japanese Spaniel,' and was highly popular with Japanese nobility - hence why the breed's name alludes to the 'Japanese.' However, other records indicate that the Japanese Chin probably would have come into existence during the mid-6th century as this is when the breed was gifted to a Japanese Empress.
