Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected stories from the 1995 National Book Award finalist. The recipient of nearly every major literary award in the United States, Josephine Jacobsen has enjoyed a career that spans more than six decades, from the publication of her first poem at age eleven to her 1995 nomination as a National Book Award finalist. What Goes without Saying brings together thirty of her previously published stories. In "Sound of Shadows," she takes readers through the double-bolted front door of a rowhouse, into the narrow quarters of Mrs. Bart, an elderly widow who has folded her life into her dark living room where the sole light in her "one room wide" world comes from the magenta- and green-tinged colors flashing on her television screen. We follow the muezzin's melancholy call in "A Walk with Raschid," an O. Henry Prize story about an intriguing ten-year-old Arab boy who guides a honeymoon couple through the Moroccan Fez. And the tautly written "Protection" begins with an exacting poetic image that is typical of Jacobsen's insightful prose: "Mica sparkles. The banshee ambulance is beating its mad bell. Like a reaped grassblade on a meadow of macadam, its object lies."

Book It Goes without Saying

Download or read book It Goes without Saying written by Caroline Boudoux and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive toolkit for doctoral students in engineering on thesis—and journal article—preparation, project (and stress) management, IP protection, collaborations, and other aspects of the PhD journey. It shouldn't take a PhD to get a PhD, but sometimes the process can seem that confusing—even though, to the mentors and advisors, so obvious that it goes without saying. For doctoral students in engineering confronting this dilemma, Caroline Boudoux, an accomplished researcher and entrepreneur, provides a demystifying guide to the challenges—daunting, seemingly routine, and at times unexpected—of pursuing a PhD in this demanding field. In It Goes without Saying, Boudoux marshals her considerable experience mentoring graduate students, teaching doctoral workshops, and—not so long ago—earning her own PhD at MIT to give PhD candidates the know-how, and the confidence, to succeed. Among the topics this book takes up are: What a PhD is: the journey, the milestones, and the endgame. Technical questions about what a doctoral project in engineering is and how to lead one. Practical matters including tips on writing, from proposal to dissertation; ethics; and intellectual property. Personal concerns, such as dealing with expectations, imposter syndrome, and stress. From the mundane to the metaphysical, this user-friendly guide gives the doctoral student in engineering the tools to make it from Day 1 to the successful completion of the PhD in a timely, fully informed, and forward-looking manner.

Book Bourdieu s Philosophy and Sociology of Science

Download or read book Bourdieu s Philosophy and Sociology of Science written by Kyung-Man Kim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Pierre Bourdieu's philosophy and sociology of science, which, though central to his thought, have been largely neglected in critical examinations of his work. Addressing the resultant confusion that surrounds Bourdieu's sociologized philosophy of science, it expounds his epistemology and sociology of science, situating it within the context of Anglo-American post-positivist philosophy of science and shedding light on the critique of relativist sociology of science that emerges from his field theory. From a detailed critique of Bourdieu's reflexive sociology and his attempt to enhance the uneasy epistemic status of the social sciences, the author draws on the thought of Jürgen Habermas to suggest critical ethnography as a way of going beyond Bourdieu’s critical theory. As such, Bourdieu's Philosophy and Sociology of Science will appeal to sociologists, philosophers, and scholars across the social sciences with interests in the work of Bourdieu and the sociology and philosophy of science.

Book excerpt: Shamarcus and Keko are foster sister and brother who were able to escape from their foster parent’s organized sex ring. At the age of 13 and 14, they ran into Anson who is a trained assassin. After a near death experience with Anson, he takes them under his wings. Now that they are trained, the first thing they want to do is seek revenge on their foster parents. With Anson gone on a trip with his family it becomes the perfect time. Will they be able to pull off a clean job, or will someone make a mistake? Now at the age of 16 and 17, hormones are beginning to rage and they are starting to take notice of one another. They’ve looked at each other as siblings for so long that neither one of them wants to say anything. Once they start seeking advice from Anson and his wife Shay, someone has to swallow their pride and make a move. That might not be the easiest thing since both of them have admirers begging for their attention. Will they finally admit to one another their feelings, or will one of their admirers capture their heart beforehand? Being harassed by the police is nothing new for young black men. When Shamarcus gets stopped by the police the wheels in his head began to turn. After talking with Anson about it he tries to steer clear of the officer. But once the police pulled him and Keko over he can no longer let it slide. Will Keko and Anson be able to talk him out of assassinating the cop, or will a certain event push him over the edge?

The main part of the book contains original contributions to an international symposium the Institute held in October 1993 on ethics and social philosophy. The papers deal among others with questions of justice, equality, just social institutions, human rights, the connections between rationality and morality and the methodological problems of applied ethics. The Documentation section contains previously unpublished papers by Rudolf Carnap, Philipp Frank, Charles W. Morris and Edgar Zilsel, and the review section presents new publications on the Vienna Circle. The Vienna Circle Institute is devoted to the critical advancement of science and philosophy in the broad tradition of the Vienna Circle, as well as to the focusing of cross-disciplinary interest on the history and philosophy of science in a social context. The Institute's Yearbooks will, for the most part, document its activities and provide a forum for the discussion of exact philosophy, logical and empirical investigations, and analysis of language.

Book Theory as Method in Research

Download or read book Theory as Method in Research written by Mark Murphy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While education researchers have drawn on the work of a wide diversity of theorists over the years, much contemporary theory building in these areas has revolved around the work of Pierre Bourdieu. Theory as Method in Research develops the capacity of students, researchers and teachers to successfully put Bourdieu’s ideas to work in their own research and prepare them effectively for conducting Masters and Doctoral scholarships. Structured around four core themes, this book provides a range of research case studies exploring educational identities, educational inequalities, school leadership and management, and research in teacher education. Issues as diverse as Chinese language learning and identity, school leadership in Australia and the school experience of Afro-Trinidadian boys, are covered, intertwined with a set of innovative approaches to theory application in education research. This collection brings together, in one comprehensive volume, a set of education researchers who place Pierre Bourdieu’s key concepts such as habitus, capital and field at the centre of their research methodologies. Full of insight and innovation, the book is an essential read for practitioners, student teachers, researchers and academics who want to harness the potential of Bourdieu’s core concepts in their own work, thereby helping to bridge the gap between theory and method in education research.
