Book The Orchard and Fruit Garden

Download or read book The Orchard and Fruit Garden written by Elizabeth Watts and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchard and Fruit Garden: Their Culture and Produce We have so many excellent large and expensive works on fruit culture, that I should never have thought of writing this one, if its peculiar place had not stood vacant, waiting to be filled. It is the first cheap work on the Orchard and Fruit Garden. Those who, like myself, have had through life some space of land, between a pole and an acre, at command, do not need to be puzzled with lists of hundreds in the selection of the trees they want; their need is one which I have made it my endeavour to supply, i.e. particulars of a few good sorts of fruit trees of all kinds which any careful cultivator can manage, and which may be obtained at any good nursery. The sorts named are good, those I most recommend I have tested, and the directions given respecting their cultivation will be found plain, concise, and practical. I can only hope my little book will be found useful to all who delight in fruit culture, but who cannot command access to voluminous and expensive works upon the subject. Book The Orchard Lawn and Garden Guide

Download or read book The Orchard Lawn and Garden Guide written by Geo H. Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Orchard, Lawn and Garden Guide: A Ready Reference Guide for the Growing of Vegetables, Shade and Fruit Trees, Flowers and Shrubs, Lawn Making, Pruning and Spraying, Etc The first edition of this book under the name of The A. B. C. Garden Book, published in the spring of 1920, was a small booklet on vegetable gardening. The book was hardly out of press before I realized the demand for a larger and more complete book, covering a wider field. This is my second effort to bring before the public a book that will be useful to city and small town gardeners, and while I have exercised every care in choosing reliable information, I can scarcely hope to have escaped errors. With many years experience in gardening, planting, prun ing and spraying, as well as propagating, soiling and lawn making, I have here tried to give the reader the benefit of this experience. Should you find any errors or important omissions, I would appreciate your calling my attention to them, as it will be helpful to me in compiling other editions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elliott's Fruit Book: Or, the American Fruit-Brower's Guide in Orchard and Garden It will be found, on examination, that I have credited every author with whatever I have extracted from his works: that all descriptions of fruits, made by others, have attached thereto the initials of the author's name, or abbreviations of the title of the work from which they were taken. I have continued my classification mainly as in previous Editions, simply changing the terms designating their classes. Of the descriptions of fruit, some explanation may be necessary. First, is given the standard name in capitals. Below this are placed, in Smaller type, the various synonyms, or local names, by which the dme fruit is known in various countries, or parts of the country. The text, descriptive of nearly every valuable variety, will be found to explain in what section of country, and in what soil it succeeds best. Having given more attention to Southern fruits, and their seasons, than formerly, and finding many to succeed well South, that have been superseded North and East, I have introduced them throughout the work; hence, I think it will be found as well adapted to that as to other portions of the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Culturist, Adapted to the Climate of the Northern States: Containing Directions for Raising Young Trees in the Nursery, and for the Management of the Orchard and Fruit Garden The object of this work, is not only to furnish useful directions to those who may be little acquainted with the management of Fruit Trees, but to promote the culture of the best varieties, and to improve their treatment so as to secure excellence and productiveness in a more eminent degree than is usually attained. It was a very just remark of Professor Lindley, that those who have sought for information in books on this subject, have generally found plenty of rules for action, but very few reasons. The writer has aimed to avoid this error, and by occasionally presenting the rationale of operations, to simplify the directions given, and render them more clear and obvious to the practical cultivator. When Doctor Dwight first removed to New Haven, but little fruit was raised there. He urged his neighbors to plant trees, but they said it was of no use, for the boys would steal all the fruit.(53) Plant more, was his answer, make good fruit plenty.
