Book Everything Can Be Beaten

Download or read book Everything Can Be Beaten written by Jhonen Vasquez and published by SLG Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admirers of the well-beloved Mr. Chancre Scolex should find reason to rejoice in Everything Can Be Beaten which, according to the author, is "based on a completely fabricated true story." Mr. Scolex devoted his time and talent to writing Everything Can Be Beaten's compelling story, as well as to designing the book's unique layout and the appearance of its complex, multi-faceted characters. Matching Mr. Scolex's devotion to quality and artistry, Mr. Scrambly supplied colorful painted illustrations. These paintings vividly depict the story of IT, a hapless creature who breaks out of his monotonous existence to explore the realms that lie outside of the only room he has ever known. Bored of a life spent beating an endless supply of kittens, IT ventures outside and discovers a world entirely new to him. Though he is at first elated to find a place full of wonder and happiness, IT soon realizes that he can never belong in this welcoming, joyful land. "Alone in paradise," he is despondent and depressed until he realizes that, indeed, everything can be beaten, even in this strange new world. Writing and layouts by Chancre Scolex (sometimes known as Jhonen Vasquez), paintings by Crab Scrambly.

Book Everything You Love Will Burn

Download or read book Everything You Love Will Burn written by Vegas Tenold and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dark story of the shocking resurgence of white supremacist and nationalist groups, and their path to political power Six years ago, Vegas Tenold embedded himself among the members of three of America's most ideologically extreme white nationalist groups-the KKK, the National Socialist Movement, and the Traditionalist Workers Party. At the time, these groups were part of a disorganized counterculture that felt far from the mainstream. But since then, all that has changed. Racially-motivated violence has been on open display at rallies in Charlottesville, Berkeley, Pikesville, Phoenix, and Boston. Membership in white nationalist organizations is rising, and national politicians, including the president, are validating their perceived grievances. Everything You Love Will Burn offers a terrifying, sobering inside look at these newly empowered movements, from their conventions to backroom meetings with Republican operatives. Tenold introduces us to neo-Nazis in Brooklyn; a millennial Klanswoman in Tennessee; and a rising star in the movement, nicknamed the "Little Fü by the Southern Poverty Law Center, who understands political power and is organizing a grand coalition of far-right groups to bring them into the mainstream. Everything You Love Will Burn takes readers to the dark, paranoid underbelly of America, a world in which the white race is under threat and the enemy is everywhere.

Book excerpt: "This book is a collection of about 100 documents designed to act as ad aid to study for sixth form, college and university students who are covering European history from the seventeenth century to the present day. This collection of documents elaborates certain themes in the the history of Europe since 1648. It has grown out of the working experience of a group of university teachers concerned to introduce first-year university students to methods of historical study by reference to contemporary material. Each theme is an aspect of the basic process of European history in the modern era which is taken to be the continent and their readjustment to rising super-powers on the oceanic and continental frontiers and to changing conditions in Africa and Asia. The varied attempts by European governments and statesmen to confront the political and social problems of a period of accelerating change are illustrated while further chapters provide the opportunity of studying in some depth two occasions when particularly important new ideas and expedients were tested--the French and Russian Revolutions. The backgrounds are considered not only from the point of view of international relations but also in wider and deeper perspectives. The varying character of the relationship between Europe and the wider world is the other principal theme of the collection. There are ten chapters, each divided into sections. Each section contains one of more documents illustrating a particular topic. The editors have not aimed at comprehensive treatment of the period, but rather have chosen to elaborate certain themes. These themes they believe to be extremely important ones which do provide at least one illuminating means of approaching recent European History. While all the documents in the collection should prove useful as illustrative material, most of them have been selected with particular reference to their usefulness as material for group discussions. it seems to the editors desirable that such material should direct discussion outwards to wide controversial issues and major themes in recent European History but at the same time make it possible for students to elucidate some detailed references and to gain the benefit of narrowing the focus of their attention at certain points. Whilst bearing these aims in mind, the editors have tried also to provide sufficient variety of material to make it possible for tutors to be flexible in their approaches; thus for example, the problem of the 'New Imperialism' could be studied with the aid of any one or all of four or five documents. In pursuit of these aims, the editors have chosen documents from a wide variety of sources. Whilst including a few familiar documents, the collection generally avoids hackneyed material. Some of the choices are here translated into English for the first time."--Front and back flaps of book jacket.

Book All American Boys

Download or read book All American Boys written by Jason Reynolds and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. In this New York Times bestselling novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension. A bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? There were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken directly from today’s headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

Book excerpt: "I am a fanatic about freedom. And I'm fanatical about coming at you hard in this book." Maybe you're not as free as you think you are. Even worse, you may have been duped into believing that a "balanced" life is the key to happiness (it isn't) or that a relationship with God is about layering on rules and restrictions (nope). Whether it’s media-fueled fear, something a parent or teacher said that you just can’t shake, or even the reality of dark spiritual forces bent on keeping you down, something is holding you back from the full-on freedom God intends for you. The Bible says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Not fear. Not guilt. Not morality. Freedom. You can have the sort of joy you thought only kids could have. The day of freedom is here.

Book A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear

Download or read book A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear written by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tiny American town's plans for radical self-government overlooked one hairy detail: no one told the bears. Once upon a time, a group of libertarians got together and hatched the Free Town Project, a plan to take over an American town and completely eliminate its government. In 2004, they set their sights on Grafton, NH, a barely populated settlement with one paved road. When they descended on Grafton, public funding for pretty much everything shrank: the fire department, the library, the schoolhouse. State and federal laws became meek suggestions, scarcely heard in the town's thick wilderness. The anything-goes atmosphere soon caught the attention of Grafton's neighbors: the bears. Freedom-loving citizens ignored hunting laws and regulations on food disposal. They built a tent city in an effort to get off the grid. The bears smelled food and opportunity. A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear is the sometimes funny, sometimes terrifying tale of what happens when a government disappears into the woods. Complete with gunplay, adventure, and backstabbing politicians, this is the ultimate story of a quintessential American experiment -- to live free or die, perhaps from a bear.
