The SA Tribes programme is one of the most comprehensive research studies carried out in South Africa's history. Nearly 15,000 South Africans were interviewed during the period 1997-2001. From the poorest Xhosa-speakers in the Eastern Cape to wealthy Sandton executives, representatives from every strata of this country's diverse populace have been questioned. The resultant assessment is as thought-provoking as it is groundbreaking. UCT professor Steve Burgess has worked closely with learned colleagues from all over the world - and has enjoyed extensive support from leading research companies Markinor and Gallup - to put together this authoritative and insightful portrait of the Rainbow Nation as it heads towards its 10th anniversary. Although initially conceived as a tool for marketers seeking to understand the changing demographics of the new South Africa, SA Tribes has become required reading for anyone determined to understand the social and political geography of the country.SA Tribes contends that understanding and embracing our social identities, rather than dwelling on racial differences, is key to a successful society in South Africa. Thanks to the SA Tribes study we are now better placed than ever to know and understand our neighbours.

Book 750 French Verbs and Their Uses

Download or read book 750 French Verbs and Their Uses written by Jan R. Zamir and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1992-08-17 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential grammar taught simply and directly. 750 French Verbs and Their Uses gives you the backbone of language study -- correct verb usage -- by showing verb conjugations in their contexts. To understand the value of such an approach, consider the English verb "to hold," the meaning of which can change dramatically when used in expressions such as "hold on," "hold up," "hold off," and "hold down"; in French, as students of the language have perennially learned to their frustration, the changes are far broader and apply to many more verbs. Now you won't have to guess how a verb is used in a sentence: 750 French Verbs and Their Uses gives you all the correct variations and grammatical interrelationships. Correct usages are illustrated in common phrases and idiomatic expressions. Unusual or troublesome expressions are emphasized throughout. And special attention is given to reflexive verbs (often difficult for English speakers) to make their usage clear. Perfect for students and travelers, ideal as a text, a grammar book and a reference, 750 French Verbs and Their Uses will help you not only to conjugate verbs, but also to use them correctly and comprehensibly. Series Editors: Jan R. Zamir, PhD, and Sonia Zamir, MA Also available in the series: 750 German Verbs and Their Uses and 750 Spanish Verbs and Their Uses.

Book Jukes Tonks

  • Author : Trey R. Barker
  • Publisher : Down & Out Books
  • Release : 2021-04-19
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Jukes Tonks written by Trey R. Barker and published by Down & Out Books. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether their cover bands play Willie Dixon or Willie Nelson, juke joints and honky-tonks appeal to hard-working men and women looking for a good time. Offering hot music, cheap food, and generous amounts of liquor, jukes and tonks are often a community’s unofficial gathering spot, where Saturday nights are spent committing the sins church leaders rail against the following morning. The stories in Jukes & Tonks introduce you to many sinners and few saints, love begun and love gone wrong, and all manner of unsavory criminal endeavors. What the stories have in common is that they plop you down in worlds where the music pulsating from the compact stage—if there’s a stage at all—provides the backbeat for tales that are unsparing, heartbreaking, twisty, and a few are as dark as the night, and the blinking sign offering live music is an invitation to the unexpected. Contributors include Trey R. Barker, Michael Bracken, Jonathan Brown, S.A. Cosby, John M. Floyd, Debra H. Goldstein, Gar Anthony Haywood, Penny Mickelbury, Gary Phillips, William Dylan Powell, Kimberly B. Richardson, and Stacy Woodson. Praise for JUKES & TONKS: “The world needs more jukes, more tonks, and more fine crime fiction—and this fast-paced playlist from Michael Bracken and Gary Phillips offers all of the above and then some. It’s a #1 hit…with a bullet!” —Josh Pachter, editor of The Great Filling Station Holdup: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Songs of Jimmy Buffett “While twists abound and nothing is predictable, one thing is certain: Jukes & Tonks transports the reader to a world where the drinks are cheap, the dancing is close, and the music reigns supreme.” —Holly West, Anthony Award-nominated editor of Murder-a-Go-Go’s: Crime Fiction Inspired by the Music of The Go-Go’s

Book Talisman Sheherezade

Download or read book Talisman Sheherezade written by Max Furst and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Fuerst, the German language author of this book, has in its pages brought together the stories of the imperiled lives and all-too-often untimely deaths of his many friends. He and his friends were Jewish, and that particularly singled out for persecution at the hands of the totalitarian regime called the third Reich and its notorious and virulently anti-Semitic leader, Adolf Hitler. The Trying Twenties were the years from the end of WWI in 1918 until 1932, the year the National Socialist Party (the Nazis) gained the majority in the Parliament (called Reichstag) and with it, the power to build up the so-called Third Reich. During these trying twenties, Germany was known as the Weimar Republic because during this time, the seat of Germanys government was moved from Berlin to Weimar. During the time of the Weimar Republic, there existed and grew a youth movement. Young people formed groups, collectively known as Der Wandervogel (the Rambling Bird). The movement was popular in that it promoted healthy outdoor activities for the young, and it furthered a foot-to-the-ground acquaintance of the young people with their German homeland. But the individual groups each had their own ideas and ideals. Max and Margot Fuerst and their friends founded a Jewish wander group and called it the Black Band. The name was derived from a band of militant peasants during the Peasants War of the 1520s, the years of the Lutheran reformation. While Max tells the stories of his friendsstories with worrisome echoes in what we, in our time and country, the United States, presently experienceit can be said that both the similarities as well as the dissimilarities are worth observing and to be taken into account.

Download or read book The Suspicion of Virtue written by John J. Conley and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The salon was of particular importance in mid- to late-seventeenth-century France, enabling aristocratic women to develop a philosophical culture that simultaneously reflected and opposed the dominant male philosophy. In The Suspicion of Virtue, John J. Conley, S. J., explores the moral philosophies developed by five women authors of that milieu: Madame de Sablé, Madame Deshoulières, Madame de la Sabliére, Mlle de la Vallière, and Madame de Maintenon. Through biography, extensive translation, commentary, and critical analysis, The Suspicion of Virtue presents the work of women who participated in the philosophical debates of the early modern period but who have been largely erased from the standard history of philosophy. Conley examines the various literary genres (maxim, ode, dialogue) in which these authors presented their moral theory. He also unveils the philosophical complexity of the arguments presented by these women and of the salon culture that nurtured their preoccupations. Their pointed critiques of virtue as a mask of vice, Conley asserts, are relevant to current controversy over the revival of virtue theory by contemporary ethicians.
