I pray you all give your audience, And hear this matter with reverence, By figure a moral play The Summoning of Everyman called it is, That of our lives and ending shows How transitory we be all day. This matter is wondrous precious But the intent of it is more gracious, And sweet to bear away. The story saith, Man, in the beginning, Look well, and take good heed to the ending, Be you never so gay! Ye think sin in the beginning full sweet, Which in the end causeth thy soul to weep, When the body lieth in clay. Here shall you see how Fellowship and Jollity, Both Strength, Pleasure, and Beauty, Will fade from thee as flower in May. For ye shall hear, how our heaven king Calleth Everyman to a general reckoning: Give audience, and hear what he doth say.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The purpose of realizing this historical context is to approach the understanding of a historical epoch from the elements provided by the text. Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment.Ernest Rhys (; July 17, 1859 - May 25, 1946) was a Welsh-English writer, best known for his role as founding editor of the Everyman Library series of affordable classics. He wrote essays, short stories, poetry, novels, and plays.Rhys was born in Islington in North London, the son of John Rees (his spelling) and his English wife Emma Percival de Hockerill. Soon after, her father settled in the wine and spirits trade, working for Walter Gilbey at a location in Nott Square, Carmarthen, where before marriage he had been training for the ministry. The family was in Carmarthen for several years and had a Welsh-speaking maid. Book excerpt: Written in Middle English during the Tudor period, "Everyman" is the most famous example of the medieval morality play. Popular in Europe during the 15th and 16th century, morality plays were allegorical dramas in which the protagonists are met with the personifications of personal attributes and tasked with choosing either a good and godly life or evil. "Everyman" is the archetypal morality play, as the main character, Everyman, represents all of mankind. God, frustrated with the wicked and greedy, sends Death to Everyman and summons him to account for his misdeeds and sins. It was believed that God tallied all of one's good and evil deeds in life and then one must provide an accounting before God upon one's death. During Everyman's pilgrimage to God, he meets many characters, such as Fellowship, Good Deeds, and Knowledge. Everyman asks them all to join him in his journey so that he may improve his reckoning before God. In the end, it is only Good Deeds that stays with him before God and helps Everyman find salvation and eternal life. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982

Download or read book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982 written by Terry Seymour and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of Everyman's Library volumes that still survive somewhere in the world exceeds 70 million. Since the inception of the Library in 1906, nearly 1200 unique volumes have been published, constantly placing the world's greatest books before a large public. A few of these titles proved unpopular and were never reprinted. But most were reprinted dozens of times, packaged in numerous ways, and benefited from updated editorial work and book design over the last century. Terry Seymour has studied and researched every aspect of this great mass of books. He now captures and distills this knowledge in A Printing History of Everyman's Library 1906-1982. A critical feature, of course, is to update the various collecting factoids that have emerged since 2005 when his Guide to Collecting Everyman's Library was published. The meat of the new book, however, is the Bibliographical Entries section. Each volume that has ever been printed receives its own entry, detailing every printing, each dust jacket variation, any new introductions, updated scarcity numbers, and all relevant notes. Typically an entry contains at least six lines of information, but often much more. In essence, each entry is a story written exclusively about each volume. Armed with this resource, collectors and booksellers can know reliably everything about the Everyman's Library volume that sits on their shelf or is ready to be purchased or sold. They will see how a book fits into the total printing history of that title, and be able to describe and value the book with precision. To further enhance the value of this book, color images illustrate all of the key collecting points. An extensive index of editors, translators and artists is now included. Not just a solo effort, the Printing History has been vetted by other expert collectors, ensuring greater accuracy and comprehensiveness.
