Book The United Nations and Decolonization The Role of Afro Asia

Download or read book The United Nations and Decolonization The Role of Afro Asia written by Y. El-Ayouty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United Nations' Charter was signed in San Francisco in 1945, the number of African member states of the Organisation was only 4. By the end of 1960 it had risen to 22. Today it is 41. How has this come about? The answer is given in this valuable book by Dr. Yassin EI-Ayouty. The handful of Asian and African countries who had the privilege of foundation membership made it their business to see to it that their brethren who were still under the colonial yoke attained their freedom and independence as soon as possible and, in the meanwhile, that they were treated with decency and fairness by their colonial masters. It was a tough assignment. The struggle was long, requiring a great deal of patience and endurance. It was at times fierce, requiring much dogged resolution. It also called for the deployment of intellectual agility ofthe highest order. Fortunately all these qualities were available in the rep resentatives of Asia and Africa who led the great struggle. These dis tinguished delegates also demonstrated a wonderful degree of solidarity which has, happily, become an Afro-Asian tradition at the United Nations. The battle began even before the Organisation had itself become a fact. It would have been a more difficult struggle, had there been no provision in the Charter at all in respect of colonies, by whatever name called.

Download or read book The War on Drugs written by Ron Chepesiuk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-12-17 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the whole story of the world of drugs—from the infamous Opium Wars to the legal availability of narcotics in the United States during the past century; from the unexpected boost given to illicit drugs by Prohibition to the great success of the French Connection. The global drug trade is one of the most prominent examples of the law of supply and demand. Despite such countermeasures as the execution of narcotics dealers in China and the United States's much-ballyhooed "War on Drugs," drug traffickers have always managed to meet the demand and satisfy an ever-growing customer base. In addition to offering a wealth of little-known facts, The War on Drugs also covers major dealers, cartels, organizations, smuggling and anti-smuggling strategies, major miscalculations and disasters, drug epidemics, legal restraints, famous incidents, and more.

Book Women in the New Millennium

Download or read book Women in the New Millennium written by Anne Breneman and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2006-02-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dynamic analysis of the gender revolution, authors Anne Breneman and Rebecca Mbuh create a platform for scholars from a variety of cultures to reflect upon their experiences as women and men in gendered cultures and upon their visions of prospects for gender equality and empowerment. Conceived during the United Nation's Fourth World Women's Conference in 1995 and continued during the Beijing +5 conference in 2000, this work represents the culmination of a ten-year project involving women from China, Sweden, Korea, Cameroon, Indonesia, South Africa, and the USA. Organized in five parts—Beginning, Women Awakening, Women Arising, Hazards of Growing up Female, and Reflections and Prospects—Women in the New Millennium includes perspectives in the form of scholarship, historical narratives, and interview materials aimed at contributing to public awareness of the global nature of the gender revolution. With their analyses and examples of the expanding gender revolution, Breneman and Mbuh seek to stimulate an interdisciplinary, international dialogue that leads to the further creation of action plans and will ultimately contribute to the empowerment of women and the equality of women and men in the new millennium.
