Book excerpt: A classic travelogue that brilliantly conjures 1930s Britain. In this series of pen-portraits of England from the 1930s, Victor Canning ‘evocatively captures the pattern and colour of English life’ (The Bookseller), from Cumbria to Cornwall. Canning’s heart-warming and humorous observations of sleepy villages, pastoral scenes and busy industries are a delightful time capsule into life in England during the interwar years. ‘What does the word England mean to you? To all of us England means something different, and yet I think there is for every man and woman some little corner which is more England than anywhere else...’ ***PRAISE FOR EVERYMAN'S ENGLAND*** 'Wonderful... elegant, humorous, exuberant essays.' Guardian 'Evocatively captures the pattern and colour of English life.’ The Bookseller ‘Canning finds beauty everywhere, but never sentimentalises, and is consistently honest enough to highlight poverty and social inequality... Canning, at his very best when waxing lyrical about landscapes, offers vivid images of the English countryside...' The Daily Mail

Finnegan's book contains passages about his childhood, World War II, his marriage, and his experiences and battles with the Railroad Union. From 1935 to the present, Finnegan touches on his life's ups and downs with grace and humor. Commenting on sensitive subjects such as the civil rights movement, rocky relationships, Catholicism, Union antics and rules, the sadness and joy of raising children, and alcoholism, Finnegan pulls no punches. With brutal honesty and the wisdom that comes from living through harsh times, Everyman's Story is not for the faint of heart. It is a gripping, candid and a wonderfully written slice-of-life account that baby boomers and the Greatest Generation will recognize and deeply appreciate. John T. Download or read book Everyman s Constitution written by Howard Jay Graham and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, Howard Jay Graham, a deaf law librarian, successfully argued that the authors of the Fourteenth Amendment--ratified after the American Civil War to establish equal protection under the law for all American citizens regardless of race--were motivated by abolitionist fervor, debunking the notion of a corporate conspiracy at the heart of the amendment's wording. For over half a century, the amendment had been used to endow corporations with rights as individuals and thus protect them from state legislation. By 1968, when Everyman's Constitution was first published, the Fourteenth Amendment had become a tool for the incorporation of the Bill of Rights to apply to all American citizens. The essays in this reprinted edition are still relevant as the nation continues to interpret our framing legislation in light of the concerns of today and to balance citizens' rights against those of corporations. Howard Jay Graham was a law librarian brought in by the NAACP's legal team to write a brief on the Fourteenth Amendment for the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. Though the Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of the NAACP based on the sociological rather than historical evidence it provided, Graham's work, published in various law journals over several decades, contributed greatly to the ongoing interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King James Version of the Bible, first published in 1611, has been the favorite of English readers for centuries. This Everyman's Library edition of The Old Testament also contains George Steiner's introduction which reminds us of the literary grandeur, uniqueness, and centrality of the Bible. "What you have in hand is not a book. It is the book. That, of course, is what 'Bible' means. It is the book which, not only in Western humanity, defines the concept of a text. All our other books, however different in matter or method, relate, be it indirectly, to this book of books... "All other books, be they histories, narrations of the imaginary, codes of law, moral treatises, lyric poems, dramatic dialogues, theological-philosophic meditations, are like sparks, often, to be sure, distant, tossed by an incessant breath from a central fire. In the Western condition, but also in other parts of the planet to which the 'Good Book' has been taken, the Bible largely informs our historical and social identity... "No other book is like it; all other books are inhabited by the murmer of that distant source." Steiner underlines, as well, our great good fortune in being able to read the Bible—which has been translated in whole or in part into more than two thousand languages—in the resplendent language of seventeenth-century England. "This is the instrument of Spenser, of Shakespeare, of Bacon, of Donne and the young Milton. It encompasses the organblasts of the Queen's rhetoric, Sidney's intimacies of desire, the 'lapidary lightness' of Ben Jonson, and the compaction of the early Metaphysical poets. It can command, seduce, enchant, and think aloud as never before or since...There could not have been a moment, a climate of feeling and general discourse, more apt to engender the two foremost constructs in the language: Shakespeare and the King James Version."

Book excerpt: That Every Man Be Armed, the first scholarly book on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, has played a significant role in constitutional debate and litigation since it was first published in 1984. Book excerpt: This profound yet clearly written volume discusses the middle section of the Psalter, psalms 51-100, which contains some of the most beautiful expressions of dedication to God in the Bible. Dr. Alden's commentary makes them come alive for Christians today. Studying the Psalms is particularly important for the Christian, since, as Dr. Alden says, "Here, more than any other place in the Bible, the heart throb of the saint is heard. Here are the most exalted expressions of God's greatness; here are the most bitter groans of the sinful and the sick. Here is something for everyone in every mood." Each psalm is examined and discussed individually in sequence. The meaning of each psalm is carefully explained within the context of a basic outline form. With all the helpful features utilized in the Everyman's Bible Commentaries this is an ideal book for personal or group study, whether in a classroom or at home. This Everyman's Bible Commentary is based upon the author's own translation of the scriptural text.
Download or read book The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol written by Nikolai Gogol and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using, or rather mimicking, traditional forms of storytelling Gogol created stories that are complete within themselves and only tangentially connected to a meaning or moral. His work belongs to the school of invention, where each twist and turn of the narrative is a surprise unfettered by obligation to an overarching theme. Selected from Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, Mirgorod, and the Petersburg tales and arranged in order of composition, the thirteen stories in The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogolencompass the breadth of Gogol's literary achievement. From the demon-haunted “St. John's Eve ” to the heartrending humiliations and trials of a titular councilor in “The Overcoat,” Gogol's knack for turning literary conventions on their heads combined with his overt joy in the art of story telling shine through in each of the tales. This translation, by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, is as vigorous and darkly funny as the original Russian. It allows readers to experience anew the unmistakable genius of a writer who paved the way for Dostevsky and Kafka.
Download or read book The Complete English Poems written by George Herbert and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Herbert combined the intellectual and the spiritual, the humble and the divine, to create some of the most moving devotional poetry in the English language. His deceptively simple verse uses the ingenious arguments typical of seventeenth-century 'metaphysical' poets, and unusual imagery drawn from musical structures, the natural world and domestic activity to explore a mosaic of Biblical themes. From the wit and wordplay of 'The Pulley' and the formal experimentation of 'Easter Wings' and 'Paradise', to the intense, highly personal relationship between man and God portrayed in 'The Collar' and 'Redemption', the works collected here show the transcendental power of divine love.
Download or read book Ephesians Everyman s Bible Commentary written by Homer Kent Jr and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1971-06 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ecumenical movement gaining impetus in today's world, ecclesiological discussions are common. What does church actually mean? Is it a visible organization or a spiritual organism? Who makes up its membership? Nearly two centuries ago, the apostle Paul spoke on these and similar issues in his letter to the Ephesian believers... This encouraging commentary focuses on a Pauline epistle that nearly bursts at the seams with life-changing doctrine. The scriptural concept of election, inspiring teachings on the doctrine and duties of the church, and other highlights from the New Testament letter receive careful attention.
