  • Author : B.S. Harris
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2021-05-04

Download or read book The Cheap Handyman written by B.S. Harris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilarious adventures in home renovations and repairs, from a real-life Red Green. Meet Brian Harris, a (mostly) retired, self-proclaimed jack of all trades with a knack for home improvements and inventive money-saving schemes. Armed with a soldering gun, his trusty 9-foot ladder, and of course the handyman’s secret weapon—duct tape—Brian’s projects start out as simple chores: trim a tree branch, stain the cedar siding on his home...but all too often they end in costly disaster. Sometimes he’s trying to do the right thing, like the time he wrecked his pool while saving some baby ducks. Often, he channels his inner MacGyver: he once taped his hockey skate back together so he could finish his rec-league game, only to get suspended for falling on the referee when it broke (again). But usually, he’s just trying to save a buck, like the time he accidentally destroyed an expensive car key fob because he wouldn’t pay the (outrageous) $10 fee to have the new battery professionally replaced. Filled with funny and entertaining true stories from the everyday life of an average guy just trying to save a few dollars, The Cheap Handyman is a tribute to anyone who has ever thought, “Sure! I can do that!”

Book The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson A Novel

Download or read book The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson A Novel written by Jerome Charyn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this brilliant and hilarious jailbreak of a novel, Charyn channels the genius poet and her great leaps of the imagination." —Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review) Jerome Charyn, "one of the most important writers in American literature" (Michael Chabon), continues his exploration of American history through fiction with The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson, hailed by prize-winning literary historian Brenda Wineapple as a "breathtaking high-wire act of ventriloquism." Channeling the devilish rhythms and ghosts of a seemingly buried literary past, Charyn removes the mysterious veils that have long enshrouded Dickinson, revealing her passions, inner turmoil, and powerful sexuality. The novel, daringly written in first person, begins in the snow. It's 1848, and Emily is a student at Mount Holyoke, with its mournful headmistress and strict, strict rules. Inspired by her letters and poetry, Charyn goes on to capture the occasionally comic, always fevered, ultimately tragic story of her life-from defiant Holyoke seminarian to dying recluse.

  • Author : Paul Christopher Johnson

Download or read book Secrets Gossip and Gods written by Paul Christopher Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging book Paul Christopher Johnson explores the changing, hidden face of the Afro-Brazilian indigenous religion of Candomblé. Despite its importance in Brazilian society, Candomblé has received far less attention than its sister religions Vodou and Santeria. Johnson seeks to fill this void by offering a comprehensive look at the development, beliefs, and practices of Candomblé and exploring its transformation from a secret society of slaves--hidden, persecuted, and marginalized--to a public religion that is very much a part of Brazilian culture. Johnson traces this historical shift and locates the turning point in the creation of Brazilian national identity and a public sphere in the first half of the twentieth century. His major focus is on the ritual practice of secrecy in Candomblé. Like Vodou and Santeria and the African Yoruba religion from which they are descended, Candomblé features a hierarchic series of initiations, with increasing access to secret knowledge at each level. As Johnson shows, the nature and uses of secrecy evolved with the religion. First, secrecy was essential to a society that had to remain hidden from authorities. Later, when Candomblé became known and actively persecuted, its secrecy became a form of resistance as well as an exotic hidden power desired by elites. Finally, as Candomblé became a public religion and a vital part of Brazilian culture, the debate increasingly turned away from the secrets themselves and toward their possessors. It is speech about secrets, and not the content of those secrets, that is now most important in building status, legitimacy and power in Candomblé. Offering many first hand accounts of the rites and rituals of contemporary Candomblé, this book provides insight into this influential but little-studied group, while at the same time making a valuable contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

Download or read book The Race written by Joe Perez and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Perez describes his compelling life story, filled with hardships, danger, and triumph. Dedicated to future generations, his memoir includes the grit and grind of growing up in Brooklyn, New York. It also demonstrates that anything is possible if you don’t give up and that one person can make a difference. With real life adventures that readers will relate to, the autobiography is interwoven with historical accounts of what was happening in the world at the time. His story spans from Brooklyn to the Bronx, to the woods of upstate New York. It describes how Joe and his brother, Ralph, started their careers as EMS workers. Joe was the co-founder of the nationally acclaimed Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps, in which he and partner James Rocky Robinson faced overwhelming odds in the city’s war zone known as Do-Or-Die Bed-Stuy. Struggling against vicious drug dealers, the duo organized a rag-tag team of community residents trying to save lives. “U.S. News & World Report” calls the area the Kill Zone of the United States. The organization went from the outhouse to The White House, by saving lives today and building new tomorrows. This inspirational story shows how these two men started an organization in an abandoned building and showed thousands a way out of poverty. They took people off welfare, replacing the gold chains that gang members wore with stethoscopes. The corps transformed street people into EMS workers for the NYC Fire Department, and trained countless police officers, physician assistants, nurses, and doctors. Ambulance service response time went from 20 minutes to four minutes, setting a national standard and was named “a thousand points of light organization” by President Bush.
