Book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint written by Carolyn M. Gerrish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rand-McNally English Grammar and Composition New text-books on grammar appear annually, a fact which proves clearly the difficulty the teacher experiences in finding the ideal book for school use. Many of these books have admirable features, but few are adapted to the needs of the learner. The young pupil does not need an exhaustive treatise. What he does need is a concise statement of the actual facts of modern English brief, clear definitions of the laws of language, and ample illustra tion of these principles by examples that illustrate, chosen from the masters of English. Book Lessons in Composition

Download or read book Lessons in Composition written by Huber Gray Buehler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Composition: Prepared to Accompany a Modern English Grammar It should be remembered that training in English involves the ear. Reading aloud, by both pupils and teacher, should be much resorted to as a means of ascertaining the qualities of a piece of writing and of developing the language sense. Although the external forms of composition have been kept in the background, it is not intended that they shall be overlooked. When the first written composition is prepared the pupils should receive the necessary directions for writing and folding. They 'should be required to use white paper, about eight by ten inches in size; to write on one side only, with black ink; to write the title in the middle of the first line, underscore it, and leave a double space; to leave a common margin of one inch and a paragraph margin of two; to read their themes carefully before handing them in to see that there are no mistakes in spelling, capitals, or punctuation; and, finally, to number each page, fold the whole lengthwise, and, with the crease lying to the left, in dorse near the top with their name, the date, and the title. *rules of punctuation will be found at the close of the grammar and the forms of letters in Lessons in Language and Literature. Book Everyday English

Download or read book Everyday English written by Franklin T. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday English: Book Two is a guidebook to mastering the English language, authored by Franklin Baker, an English professor at the Horace Mann School, and Ashley Thorndike, an English professor at Columbia University. Everyday English is divided into two major sections. The first part is dedicated to an overview of English grammar, and includes chapters on the proper construction of sentences, the various parts of speech and their particular properties, inflections, syntax, and composition. Part two is an examination of composition, and emphasizes the oral usage of English. Baker and Thorndike present the reader with a series of exercises intended to strengthen one's understanding and skills of application. A series of appendixes conclude the work and are useful for the reader seeking to further pursue their studies. Everyday English is a thoughtfully designed and well written textbook. The authors cover all of the most essential topics, and the latter half of the book dedicated to composition contains information not always found in language instructionals. The authors have a gift for clearly explaining sometimes complex principles, making this an eminently usable work. Everyday English: Book Two is an expertly delivered textbook on the topic of common English. It is an accessible and detailed work, and one that should appeal to learners of various levels. If you are in the market for an English language guidebook, the work of Baker and Thorndike is worthy of your consideration. Book Writing in English

Download or read book Writing in English written by William H. Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing in English: A Modern School Composition It would doubtless be presumptuous to imagine that this book, as a guide to the preeminently important school subject of learning to write English, avoids all the faults of its predecessors, or contains more than a portion of their merits. But unless a text-book is thought to possess some definite advantages over the others in its field, it has no excuse for being. Attention is therefore directed to the following prominent features of this elementary treatise on Writing in English: - 1. The general plan of the development of the subject is noteworthy, as proceeding from the study and production of entire compositions, in the first chapters, to the study of the next order of composition-units, well-made paragraphs, then to sentence-construction and, at length, to the smallest units of composition, words. Since it would, however, be unwise to complete any one of these great divisions of the subject before attending at all to the others, this general order, while it is kept in view throughout, is modified as shown in the Table of Contents; to which, and to its prefatory note, attention is requested. Book Everyday Writing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Everyday Writing Classic Reprint written by Howard Bristol Grose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Writing I began work on this book as a revision of College Composition, 1926. In a way the present book is a revision, for I have retained in Everyday Writing whatever tested material seemed germane to my newer purpose. But the new title is warranted by many differences between the two books and by the fact that other writers have adopted the title of the earlier volume. In Everyday Writing I have tried to include those things that a non-professional writer needs to know about composition - and nothing else. Not once in these pages, as far as I am aware, have I assumed or implied that the students who read them are to be authors; there is no grooming of freshmen or sophomores for careers as short story writers, novelists, or playwrights. The average intelligent and purposeful young man or woman is not made to feel under a cloud for lack of ability to "stab" a reader's consciousness or to display a "brilliantly humorous and whimsical personality" in an essay. I have taken my title quite literally. The ideal constantly set forth is that of plain prose, the useful tool which all business and professional men or women should know how to handle competently. Book Practical Grammar and Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Grammar and Composition Classic Reprint written by Thomas Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Grammar and Composition This book was begun as a result of the author's experience in teaching some classes in English in the night preparatory department of the Carnegie Technical Schools. Of Pittsburg. The pupils in those classes were all adults, and needed only such a course as would enable them to express themselves in clear and correct English. English Grammar, with them, was not to be preliminary to the grammar of another language, and composition was not to be studied beyond the everyday needs of the practical man. Great difficulty was experienced because of inability to secure a text that was suited to the needs of the class. A book was needed that would be simple, direct and dignified; that would cover grammar, and the essential principles of sentence structure, choice of words, and general composition; that would deal particularly with the sources of frequent error, and would omit the non-essential points; and, finally that would contain an abundance of exercises and practical work. Book English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Composition Classic Reprint written by Franklin Thomas Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition The present text-book is intended as a guide to pupils in the first two years' work in English in the high school. The creed of its authors may be summed up in a few words: (1) A text-book in com position should be short, simple, clear; (2) it should set forth the principles of writing mainly in non technical language, i. E., in such language as the pupils Will recognize as being in their own sphere of interests and ideas; (3) it should lay stress upon the matter to be dealt With before the form, and upon the results to be obtained rather than the method; (4) it should give abundant suggestions as to material suitable for treatment by the pupils. In the view of the authors, the book contains material enough for the instruction in composition over a period of two years, Where such instruction is given once or twice a week. For no exercise in writ ing, of any type, is likely to attain its end if given but once. The pupil needs to try the work, to have his efforts judged by the teacher, and then to try again With the help derived from the teacher's criticisms. Even if his first attempt should be fairly successful, he should do more work of the same kind. For writ ing is an art, and, like all arts, requires frequent and thoughtful practice. With this procedure in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint written by Homer E. Woodbridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition Sir Philip Sidney says of the lawyer that "our wickedness maketh him necessary, and necessity maketh him honorable." Something of the kind, I suppose most teachers would agree, might be said of textbooks of composition. Whether or not necessity makes them honorable, our deficiencies make them necessary. The best teacher of composition I have known did not use a text-book; and if we could all teach like Dean Briggs, we might wisely make a bonfire of the books. As matters stand, however, they are generally regarded as a necessary evil. On another point, I believe, a majority of teachers would agree. Experience has shown, if it has shown anything, that the amount of rhetorical theory which most students can assimilate and put into practice is small. The average college freshman finds it extremely difficult to grasp even the simplest abstract idea; the most that we can reasonably hope is that he may be induced to lay firm hold upon a few basic principles. To multiply abstractions and distinctions is to confuse him hopelessly. If the study of rhetorical theory in the freshman course were an end in itself, we might still, for the sake of the best students, be justified in presenting it elaborately and in detail. But it is not an end in itself; it is admittedly ancillary to correct and clear writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
