Book excerpt: A guide to children's ministry that serves families with special needs Jesus set a high standard when He said "Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." The call is not limited to children who will sit quietly at His feet and listen, who color between the lines, who raise their hands and wait to be called upon, and who work at grade level. Children's ministries are responsible to be ready to bring children with disabilities to Jesus' feet too. Every Child Welcome is the guide for leaders and volunteers to assist in purposeful planning and skill development for a ministry inclusive of children with unique needs. Experienced children's ministry leaders, and parents of special-needs children themselves, the authors are superbly equipped to offer a thoughtful, thorough approach to creating a positive environment for children--one where all children will be able to digest the important concepts being taught. For leaders and volunteers, Every Child Welcome will provide the knowledge and tools to * create a welcoming environment before kids arrive * help children learn more effectively by connecting new information to what they already know * reinforce the main idea of a lesson, building background knowledge and reviewing important concepts * supplement instruction with hands-on activities to increase attention and participation * reinforce and wrap up an activity effectively

Using the metaphor of song, the book opens with the arrival of a newborn and its unique 'song', then pans out to explore all the essential things that every song needs to thrive - love, protection, a home, a name, the chance to explore and learn. In the latter half of the book, the issues of child labour, exploitation and war are sensitively introduced to emphasise that we all must play our part in championing children's rights and offering support to those who need it most. With deeply moving watercolour illustrations by award-winning artist Marc Martin, this is a book that encourages children and adults alike to speak up for young people all around the world, and to treat one another with compassion and kindness.

Download or read book Every Child Matters written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Education and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched by the Government in 2003, 'Every Child Matters' is a comprehensive programme of reform for children's services that aims to more closely integrate educational, health, social and specialist services so that there could be earlier intervention and closer working between professionals. This inquiry is an initial overview of progress that looks at: the background to the reform; overarching issues; placing young children at the centre of the reforms; integrated services and processes; integrated strategy and governance and inter-departmental issues. Overall the drive to improve both universal and targeted services in the same suite of reforms has been well received and there is evidence that progress has been made. The issues of concern are: the proposed network of computerised 'child indexes'; whether efficiency savings can pay for improvements; the fact that some agencies such as schools and general practitioners have not been placed under a duty to co-operate; and that there are tensions between different policies affecting children and young people.
