Book Letters of a Family During the Civil War Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Letters of a Family During the Civil War Abridged Annotated written by Georgeanna Woolsey Bacon and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable collections of letters to come out of the American Civil War is this compilation by the Woolsey family. Educated, aware, and closely affectionate, the family exchanged and kept letters throughout the war. Included in the set are those from family members serving in hospitals, taking collections for soldiers at home, and a soldier serving on the front lines with Grant, Sheridan, and Meade. What was life like for those who watched their country rent by war? The desperate anxiety and despair of the early war and the hopeful expressions later on give a vivid and very human face to an event that, though long past, is still apart of who we are as Americans today. There is also humor and gossip, and an incredible awareness of what was going on in battles far from home. That the collection includes letters from various family members provides a view into Civil War life as no other. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book KnitLit the Third

Download or read book KnitLit the Third written by Linda Roghaar and published by Potter Craft. This book was released on 2010-04-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you’re a veteran knitter or brand-new to the needles, KnitLit creators Linda Roghaar and Molly Wolf welcome you into their ever-growing circle with KnitLit the Third, an all-new collection of stories about the ups, downs, ins, and outs of knitting. With more than seventy contributors casting on here, you’ll meet enthusiasts—okay, knit-aholics—who know the frustration of having one’s needles confiscated at the airport. You’ll sympathize with owners of lush “problem skeins” that are impossible to knit. You’ll encounter the mysteries of never-matching baby booties–and the adventures of one suspicious knitter who’s convinced that a fellow knitting blogger is really a celebrity author in disguise. For those who approach this art from a more spiritual perspective, there are the stories that remind us of the power of a simple stitch. From the mother whose project provides comfort during her troubled pregnancy to a woman compelled to make dozens of blankets for Afghan refugees, each knitted and purled row offers the potential to heal ourselves. And so we spin on. KnitLit the Third is the latest in a pattern of poignant, hilarious, bittersweet, and inspiring yarns—created by and for lovers of the craft.

Download or read book Ring Around the Maple written by Cynthia R. Comacchio and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2024-10-29 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ring Around the Maple is about the condition of children in Canada from roughly 1850 to 2000, a time during which “the modern” increasingly disrupted traditional ways. Authors Cynthia R. Comacchio and Neil Sutherland trace the lives of children over this “long century” with a view to synthesizing the rich interdisciplinary, often multi-disciplinary, literature that has emerged since the 1970s. Integrated into this synthesis is the authors’ new research into many, often seemingly disparate, archival and published primary sources. Emphasizing how “the child” and childhood are sociohistoric constructs, and employing age analytically and relationally, they discuss the constants and the variants in their historic dimensions. While childhood tangibly modernized during these years, it remained a far from universal experience due to identifiers of race, gender, culture, region, and intergenerational adaptations that characterize the process of growing up. This work highlights children’s perspectives through close, critical, “against the grain” readings of diaries, correspondence, memoirs, interviews, oral histories and autobiographies, many buried in obscure archives. It is the only extant historical discussion of Canadian children that interweaves the experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children with those of children from a number of settler groups. Ring Around the Maple makes use of photographs, catalogues, advertisements, government publications, musical recordings, radio shows, television shows, material goods, documentary and feature films, and other such visual and aural testimony. Much of this evidence has not to date been used as historical testimony to uncover the lives of ordinary children. This book is generously illustrated with photographs and ephemera carefully selected to reflect children’s lives, conditions, interests, and obligations. It will be of special interest to historians and social scientists interested in children and the culture of childhood, but will also appeal to readers who enjoy the "little stories" that together make up our collective history, especially when those are told by the children who lived them.

Book Life at Nazareth Academy and College Nazareth Kentucky

Download or read book Life at Nazareth Academy and College Nazareth Kentucky written by Maria Martin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take this wonderful journey back to the 1950's and learn all about what life was like at a Catholic boarding school and college! This compilation of letters written during the 1950's gives a detailed look inside Nazareth Academy and College in Nazareth, Kentucky. The following comment is from the author of the actual letters included in this book: I was given the opportunity to attend Nazareth Academy in 1951 and stayed for six years, graduating from Nazareth College in 1957. I consider this one of the greatest blessings of my life. Even after fifty plus years, the values and education I received from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are a part of my daily life. My stepmother, Rhoda Martin, saved all the letters I wrote home, an entire six years worth! I had so much fun "remembering" the people and events I had long forgotten. The letters give a glimpse into what life was like as a student in the Academy and College in the 1950's.

Her complicated past with Ellen has made her a prime suspect, and after being cuffed and questioned, she could use a little diversion. Never mind that she doesn’t know how to crochet. Granny squares don’t look that hard to make. But while Molly’s fending off a detective with a grudge and navigating crochet group politics, the real killer is at large. And it’s up to Molly to catch the culprit—before she winds up in a tight knot. Delicious recipe and crochet pattern included! “A gentle and charming novel...Its quirky and likable characters are appealing and real.”—Earlene Fowler, author of Tumbling Blocks
