Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everybody's Guide to Music: With Illustrated Chapters on Singing and Cultivation of the Voice; Full and Explicit Helps to the Piano and Organ; Complete Dictionary of Musical Terms The foundation of every Art is laid in Nature. From the cave has grown the cathedral, in architectural art. From the reflected scene or image upon the water's surface has grown the oil-painting, water-color drawing, or photograph, in pictorial art. From the chance resemblance to some living form in one of Nature's tempest-hewn rocks has grown the statue, in sculptural art. And from the humming of the bee, the singing of the birds, or the whistling of the wind over broken hollow reeds, has grown the chorale, the sonata, and the symphony, in the musical art. The painter and the sculptor still are students in the school of Nature. Daily she supplies them with fresh scenes of beauty, new forms of loveliness, which earnestly they strive to copy. It is not theirs to invent, since Nature's forms are perfect, and cannot be excelled in marble or on canvas. In decorative art, however, and still more conspicuously in architectural art, we see the putting forth of man's originality of thought and plan. The cathedral, with its stately pillars, domes, and arches, its windows, rich in color, form, and tracery, gives to the eye a pleasure such as we can find in no examples which the natural world affords. But in the art of music the inventive genius of the human mind is still more manifest. On every hand, in the compositions of the many masters of the art, and in the many musical instruments of man's design and construction, we see monuments to his fertility of brain. The authors' "Sing first, talk later" philosophy encourages beginning students to sing without judging or constraining themselves, which is an essential prerequisite for learning repertoire and the more technical aspects of the vocal mechanism. The Singing Book's thoughtfully crafted three-part structure begins with motivational chapters, then systematically builds vocal strength and skill through carefully chosen repertoire, and finally introduces important information on the major aspects of developing healthy vocal techniques. Suitable for all skill levels and voice types, The Singing Book provides an anthology of over sixty songs, chosen specifically for the beginning singer. A 2-CD set (sold separately) provides melody, rhythm guides, and piano accompaniments for all selections in the anthology (with additional keys available on the Student Web Site), and the text's useful appendices feature methods for preparing song texts, extra warm-ups and vocalises, a guide to the International Phonetic Alphabet, and a brief primer on reading music.

Book The Head Voice and Other Problems Practical Talks on Singing Illustrated

This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint of D. A. Clippinger's excellent manual on singing possesses over thirty illustrations of musical staves from his original guide. An exceptional primer on singing and voice training, The Head Voice and Other Problems assumes only the most basic musical knowledge on the part of the reader. As such, it is an excellent introduction to musical theory and the voice as an instrument, providing easy, clear instructions on the best singing practices. The book is divided into nine chapters, each of which offers a lesson concerning relevant and specific topics. This guide was written to aid both students and teachers of the voice, and includes explanations of singing's purpose and function as an art form together with practical guidance on calibration of the voice, and the study of specific songs. Guidance is given on notation and the musical scale, so that aspiring singers may understand and follow written music. Finally, the text concludes with an interesting essay on the scientific elements of singing. The methods of voice training Clippinger describes remain as practical, thought provoking and useful today as when this book was first published in 1917. Together with the original, essential illustrations, this edition also includes a useful bibliography which contains plentiful supplemental reading.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
