Book excerpt: All therapists at some time or other are confronted with cases that do not fit the assumptions of their chosen theoretical model--clients who should get better do not, while others improve for reasons the model does not explain. One lesson that can (and should) be drawn from such cases is that the client's perception of the therapist's behavior and of the intervention process is a powerful factor in therapeutic success or failure. These relationship factors account for a significant proportion of change in psychotherapy, yet little has been written about how to utilize them. Filling a gap in the literature, this book presents a pragmatic application of these simple but difficult experiential lessons to the practice of individual, couple, and family therapy. When should a therapist shift gears? And how is it done? CHANGING THE RULES presents a flexible methodology for practice that encourages clinicians to utilize their clients' interpretations in constructing more effective interventions. Providing a developmental and empirical context for the approach, the book covers the initial interview and the selection, design, and delivery of interventions, as well as issues such as ethics and gender bias. Several case examples and two full-length studies demonstrate each stage of the therapeutic process, fully illustrating the approach and enabling the creative therapist to replicate it in practice. Proposing a coherent framework for practice that empowers relationship effects, enhances therapist flexibility, and expands the repertoire of intervention strategies for working with individuals, couples, and families, this volume is an invaluable resource for clinicians, academicians, and students regardless of theoretical orientation.

Book Beyond Temptation

Download or read book Beyond Temptation written by Audrey Boss and published by Piatkus. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beyond Temptation Sophie and Audrey Boss offer a radical alternative to the tried and tested methods used to combat overeating which either encourage women to rely on willpower alone, or legitimise overeating by providing lists of 'free foods' on which women are actively encouraged to binge. This book doesn't rely on NLP, CBT or life coaching techniques, but instead draws on the authors' own experiences as two overweight and unhappy overeaters and their ten years of experience working with thousands of failed dieters in the 'Beyond Chocolate' workshops and the successful techniques used in their newly established 'Stop Overeating' workshops to offer women a practical, sustainable approach to stopping overeating and achieving long term weight loss.

Book Merci Su rez Changes Gears

Download or read book Merci Su rez Changes Gears written by Meg Medina and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Newbery Medal Thoughtful, strong-willed sixth-grader Merci Suarez navigates difficult changes with friends, family, and everyone in between in a resonant new novel from Meg Medina. Merci Suarez knew that sixth grade would be different, but she had no idea just how different. For starters, Merci has never been like the other kids at her private school in Florida, because she and her older brother, Roli, are scholarship students. They don’t have a big house or a fancy boat, and they have to do extra community service to make up for their free tuition. So when bossy Edna Santos sets her sights on the new boy who happens to be Merci’s school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, Merci becomes the target of Edna’s jealousy. Things aren't going well at home, either: Merci’s grandfather and most trusted ally, Lolo, has been acting strangely lately — forgetting important things, falling from his bike, and getting angry over nothing. No one in her family will tell Merci what's going on, so she’s left to her own worries, while also feeling all on her own at school. In a coming-of-age tale full of humor and wisdom, award-winning author Meg Medina gets to the heart of the confusion and constant change that defines middle school — and the steadfast connection that defines family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touch is essential for life, and what Viola Brody calls capable touching is the core of developmental play therapy, building both the self of the hurt child and his or her appreciation of the nurturing other. It thus makes way for dialogue between them and - as the dialogue becomes an organizing force for the child's behaving and relating - facilitates healing and maturation. In recognition of the crucial importance of 'knowing how to be present' with a child in a reparative role, Dr. Brody incorporates training in developmental play into the body of her book to provide therapists, teachers, and other helping professionals with the experience they need to understand and practice capable touching.

Book Teacher Leadership for Social Change in Bilingual and Bicultural Education

Download or read book Teacher Leadership for Social Change in Bilingual and Bicultural Education written by Deborah K. Palmer and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership takes on a tone of urgency when we are struggling for justice. At the same time, the right to lead – the agency to embrace a leadership identity – can also feel more distant when we are marginalized by the dominant society. For bilingual education teachers working with immigrant communities, the development of critical consciousness, pride in the cultural and linguistic resources of the bilingual community, the vocabulary to name and face marginalization, and a strong professional network are fundamental to their development of professional identities as leaders and advocates. Based on the experiences of 53 Spanish-English bilingual teachers in Central Texas, this book aims to explore, define, and understand bilingual teacher leadership. It merges the themes of leadership, teacher preparation and bilingual education and is essential reading for bilingual or ESL teachers, teacher educators and researchers serving an increasingly transnational/translingual student body.

Book Therapeutic Correctional Relationships

Download or read book Therapeutic Correctional Relationships written by Sarah Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between offender and criminal justice practitioner has shifted throughout rehabilitative history, whether situated within psychological interventions, prison or probation. This relationship has evolved and adapted over time, but interpersonal processes remain central to offender work. However, little work has critically focused upon the challenging task of developing and sustaining positive relationships with offenders. This book addresses this gap, providing an in-depth exploration of the processes which underpin correctional relationships within probation. Through an innovative methodology, it examines how practitioners can enhance their practice by understanding how relationships form, deepen and end effectively. For the first time, it draws on the experiences of offenders and practitioners to uncover the darker side to relationships, identifying how they can rupture and break down. From this exploration, it presents alternative ways in which relationships can be repaired and safeguarded within correctional practice. In essence, this book assists practitioners in becoming successful supporters of change. In an increasingly competitive and politicised climate, this book outlines how political and organisational tensions can impact upon the flow of relationships across the criminal justice system. Uniquely, this book examines how these tensions can be overcome to produce transformative changes. Lewis suggests that therapeutic correctional relationships can thrive within a number of correctional settings and presents the core principles of relational practice and dynamic model of therapeutic correctional relationships to assist in achieving quality and sustainable practice. This book will appeal to criminological and psychological scholars as well as students studying probation and prison practice, offender rehabilitation and desistance.

She grew up in a large close-knit family. She was closest to her youngest sister, Betty-Jean. They were more than sisters. They were like best friends. Betty-Jean confided in her and kept no secrets. She’d tell Margaret her troubles and triumphs before she’d tell anyone. Margaret lived in a small quiet town, Hollis Hill, which was a warm and peaceful place. She was a head buyer for McQueen’s, a large department store chain, and had impeccable taste and fashion sense. She met Sherry on a business trip to the big city. Margaret preferred the comfort of her small town. She stopped off at a small bar for a drink, where she met Sherry. They hit it off right away. Sherry was a pretty brunette. She had a no-nonsense personality and a temper to match. She had a complicated history full of foster homes and sexual abuse, but Margaret fell head over heels. Betty-Jean and Sherry didn’t like each other. They only tolerated each other because of Margaret. As Sherry and Margaret’s relationship deepened, Betty-Jean and Sherry’s dislike for each other grew deeper. Sherry had started receiving crank calls and roses, which became a nuisance. Sherry and Margaret met the handsome Storm Winters at a launch party. He was from Tennessee. He was a business tycoon and a jetsetter. He took an instant liking to Margaret as she did to him. Margaret didn’t warm up to people right away. However, he was different. They became good friends. After that, their lives would never be the same.
