Book excerpt: “Lovers of gritty noir will devour this . . . a pulse-pounding account of a writer’s descent into despair and violence.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) With his book sales—never strong to begin with—ebbing and the economy crashing, a writer is on the brink. When his wife leaves him and the bank takes his house, he goes over the edge. Living out of his car with his beloved bulldog, Churchill, he’s set upon by street punks just as he’s about to pawn the only things of value he has left. He’s lost nearly everything. But he’s gained a gun. His well-off brother lives in New York—far from Denver, but the only place he might find a reliable roof over his head and any hope of starting over. Along the road he will stop off to see ex-girlfriends, relatives, friends, and business associates. At this point, his primary goal is survival. But with each passing mile, the survival of others grows more uncertain—in this taut, psychologically gripping novel from a two-time International Thriller Award winner and Edgar Award finalist. Acclaim for Tom Piccirilli “Boldly original.” —New York Times Book Review on The Last Kind Words “Noir that mates Flannery O’Connor with Stephen King.” —San Francisco Chronicle on A Choir of Ill Children “Should make fans of Jim Thompson and Charlie Huston feel right at home.” —Kirkus Reviews on The Fever Kill

Book excerpt: A nameless man with nothing left to lose travels across America in a violent downward spiral in a novel that “coils and tightens like a spring” (Brian Evenson, author of Last Days). Alone except for his beloved bulldog, a former crime writer who’s failed at his career, his marriage, and his own simple hopes makes his way across America, contemplating his own bitter past along the way. Heading home to his distant brother, he witnesses tragedies and crimes—things bad enough to bring out the killer in him. Slowly but surely, he finds himself transforming into the kind of man he used to only write about. Full of realism and grit, Every Shallow Cut burrows deep into the darkness of America to give voice to the fears most of us never speak aloud: the terror of loss, the overwhelming dread of failure, the desperate push towards crime, the horror of missed-out, mediocre dreams. And the all-too-average explosive rage.
Download or read book Geometric Algorithms and Combinatorial Optimization written by Martin Grötschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, there is a close connection between geometry and optImization. This is illustrated by methods like the gradient method and the simplex method, which are associated with clear geometric pictures. In combinatorial optimization, however, many of the strongest and most frequently used algorithms are based on the discrete structure of the problems: the greedy algorithm, shortest path and alternating path methods, branch-and-bound, etc. In the last several years geometric methods, in particular polyhedral combinatorics, have played a more and more profound role in combinatorial optimization as well. Our book discusses two recent geometric algorithms that have turned out to have particularly interesting consequences in combinatorial optimization, at least from a theoretical point of view. These algorithms are able to utilize the rich body of results in polyhedral combinatorics. The first of these algorithms is the ellipsoid method, developed for nonlinear programming by N. Z. Shor, D. B. Yudin, and A. S. NemirovskiI. It was a great surprise when L. G. Khachiyan showed that this method can be adapted to solve linear programs in polynomial time, thus solving an important open theoretical problem. While the ellipsoid method has not proved to be competitive with the simplex method in practice, it does have some features which make it particularly suited for the purposes of combinatorial optimization. The second algorithm we discuss finds its roots in the classical "geometry of numbers", developed by Minkowski. This method has had traditionally deep applications in number theory, in particular in diophantine approximation.

Download or read book Elementary Gunsmithing written by Perry D. Frazer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beginner’s guide to the ins and outs of guncraftsmanship from a professional gunsmith. When it was first published in 1938, Elementary Gunsmithing was one of the few books of the time to address an amateur audience, among more advanced titles. With clear, engaging, and instructional prose, Frazer takes beginner firearm interest to the next level by talking the reader through the fundamentals of gunsmithing, such as what tools are necessary for the craft, how to solder and mount parts, and even how to conduct a fledgling gunsmithing business. He specifically addresses the “young man who likes working at the bench,” and similarly the book reflects the spirit of innovation, resourcefulness, and do-it-yourself work. While the book may not cover contemporary firearms, it offers a grandfatherly, old-school instructional vibe with accurate information about guns up to the 1940s. Frazer focuses on gunsmithing with ordinary hand tools at the work bench, rather than complicated machinery. These helpful tips and information, which are still applicable today, make Elementary Gunsmithing a useful, classic, and historically significant reference for both amateurs and budding gunsmithers keen on building a full-time business. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts.
