He is not only concerned about the spiritual life of the pastor, but also with the very community of people that trains him, calls him, relates to him, and restores him if necessary. Dangerous Calling reveals the truth that the culture surrounding our pastors is spiritually unhealthy—an environment that actively undermines the wellbeing and efficacy of our church leaders and thus the entire church body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that 80% of all first-time church visitors did NOT come by invitation of the pastor? Thats right, 80% of all first-time church visitors come as the result of being invited by a non-salaried member of the church. As a Pastor I have knocked EVERY door in the community 11 times and I have knocked every door in the surrounding towns 3 or more times. Yet the greater number of our church's visitors do NOT come as the result of my efforts. They come because one of our members (their neighbor, co-worker, relative, etc.) expressed an interest in them and invited them to come.As a full-time Baptist evangelist I discovered that a church with a soul-winning pastor will have regular professions of faith and baptisms. But a church with a soul-winning membership will have SEVERAL professions of faith and WEEKLY baptisms. The Local Church is supposed to be the Body of Christ where every member exercises his gift for the glory of God and the propagation of the Gospel. Yet MOST churches are a one-man show. The Pastor does everything and the church members do little or nothing. When I was a boy, we called people who had non-functioning body parts RETARDED. And that is what most local churches are today - RETARDED bodies where ONE member, the pastor (and maybe a few others) drag the rest of the members like a retarded man would drag a limp leg.And we wonder why our churches do not grow and do the things that we know God has called us to do.The key to a growing church is to create a church where EVERY member is a minister.Granted, not every member will be the pastor. Not everyone will be a leader. But every member can determine his spiritual gift and contribute to the work of the church by exercising his gift. The 11 chapters in this book have been used by pastors all over the world to motivate their members to serve in the local church. One pastor in Arkansas preached an 11 part sermon series (a sermon from each chapter) and as a result over half of his membership are now active in the ministries of the church.I have personally preached these lessons in churches all over the united States and in each church where I have preached these messages the members catch a vision to serve in their church. If you are a pastor, deacon, Sunday school superintendent, teacher, or just someone who wants to do more for God by serving in His church this book is for you. My address, phone number, and E-mail address are on the back cover in case you have any questions as you read.

Book Still Time to Care

    Book Details:
  • Author : Greg Johnson
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2021-12-07
  • ISBN : 0310116066
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Still Time to Care written by Greg Johnson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.

Book Discerning Your Call to Ministry

Download or read book Discerning Your Call to Ministry written by Jason K. Allen and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The church has needed this book for a long time.” — Russell Moore If you are considering the ministry, there are two mistakes to avoid. The first is taking up a calling that isn’t yours. The second is neglecting one that is. Discerning Your Call to Ministry will help you know the difference. A tool for seminary students, pastors-in-training, and even current pastors, it serves to confirm or prompt deep thought about the calling to ministry through 10 probing questions, including: Do you desire the ministry? Does your church affirm your calling? Do you love the people of God? Are you willing to surrender? Pastoral dropout rates are high, and seminary admission rates are declining—signs that many of us don’t quite know what we’re signing ourselves up for. Author Jason Allen, a former pastor and the president of North America’s fastest growing seminary, gives readers a better picture of the calling. Presenting a series of diagnostic questions informed by Scripture, church history, and his own experience, he helps those seeking ordination or ministry positions make confident decisions about their service to God, one way or the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each One a Minister, a revised and enlarged edition of Carter's previous book by the same title, begins with a 6-session study of Ephesians. Carter engages the reader in discovering the meaning of church, ministry, and gifts from the early church up to the present. As a follow-up to the Bible study, readers and study groups look at ways in which God's gifts are practical as well as spiritual. Four ministry categories, closely connected to the congregational primary task (receive, relate, equip, send), are identified. Scripture readings, activities, and ways to implement specific ministries are suggested. Designed to encourage individuals to discover God's call to ministry in their own lives, Each One a Minister leads toward practical ways of using gifts in ministries in our congregations and in our communities. An ideal resource for clergy, lay leaders, study groups, and others seeking to identify and use their gifts in meaningful ways. Discover Your Spiritual Gifts Leader's Guide is also available.
