Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Living Creature, or Heart-Training Through the Animal World Animal world is something to put to shame our own country, with its boasted Christian civiliza tion and power, there, with a. Population of some three hundred million, there is but one-fourth the amount of crime that there is each year in England, with a population of less than twenty million, and only a small fraction of what it is in the United States, with a population less than one-fourth the population of India. These are most significant facts; they are indeed facts of tremendous import, and we would do wisely to estimate them at their proper value. Book excerpt: Before "New Age" there was "New Thought," a philosophy that sought God through metaphysics and was wildly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. American mystic and bestselling author RALPH WALDO TRINE (1866-1958) was one of the most influential writers on New Thought principles, and here, in this 1899 book, he explains that how humanity behaves toward its fellow creatures is a measure of our own civility, or lack thereof: . how children learn kindness through the gentle treatment of animals . why fashion-in clothing, in food-cannot dictate our usage of animals . how a society's viewpoint on animals is reflected in its culture . and more. Vegetarians, animal lovers, and those seeking a closer communion with the natural world will find this a stirring work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Angell at 100

Download or read book Angell at 100 written by Karen Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angell at 100: A Century of Compassionate Care for Animals and Their Families at Angell Animal Medical Center chronicles the achievements of one of the foremost clinical veterinary institutions in the world. Angell Animal Medical Center is the first and largest animal hospital in New England. This book is a celebration of one hundred years of groundbreaking innovation and heartfelt compassion. Founded in 1868 by George Angell, the MSPCA is the second oldest humane organization in America. Its flagship hospital, Angell Animal Medical Center, was founded in 1915, and was the first animal hospital in New England. The MSPCA Angell has expanded from advocacy and protection to healing and advancing the practice of veterinary medicine. Over the past century the organization has seen vast changes in society, the environment, and the attitude to the animals in our lives. It has helped make laws and set standards that have fundamentally shaped our sense of kindness and care for animals and for one another. In the 21st century, MSPCAAngell continues to rescue, shelter, protect, heal, and advocate for animals, giving special care to tens of thousands of animals each year. It also provides emergency assistance and strategic planning help for animal protection groups across the United States and around the globe. This book is a portrait of Angell Animal Medical Center from its founding in 1915 to the present day, and tells the stories of the dedicated doctors, the creative medical innovations, and of course the tales of the diverse patients and their families. Today the hospital has specialties ranging from acupuncture to ophthalmology, from behavioral services to nutrition, from dentistry to neurology and neurosurgery, as well as general medicine. Although the majority of the patients are dogs and cats, birds and rabbits are not uncommon, and there is sometimes even the occasional tortoise.

Book excerpt: The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life. Now with photos and new material. Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans. John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same. Marley grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good -- Marley was expelled. But just as Marley joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley remained a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms. Marley & Me is John Grogan's funny, unforgettable tribute to this wonderful, wildly neurotic Lab and the meaning he brought to their lives.
