Book excerpt: The scene for this Christmas play and worship service is a familiar one: a nativity display in a town square. As different individuals or families approach the manger scene, they hear the voice of God speaking his words of truth, encouragement, and hope to their own unique needs and circumstances. When the members of your congregation hear God's message to these individuals, they will hear God speaking to them as well. The service includes the congregational singing of familiar Christmas carols. Diane L. Gibson is a graduate of Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois. In addition to her teaching position in a Lutheran elementary school, she has been a Sunday school superintendent and the director of both children's and adult choirs. She is the author of three other published Christmas plays.

Download or read book Every Knee Shall Bow Constantine s Empire Book 2 written by Bryan Litfin and published by Revell. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is AD 316. Imperial persecution has ended, but Christianity's future still hangs in the balance. Will churches rise in Rome where pagan temples once stood? Will the true Scriptures replace the myths of the gods? Will Jupiter finally bow the knee to the Lord Jesus? For the first time in history, the Roman emperor supports the church. Bishop Sylvester sends Flavia from her convent to seek Emperor Constantine's permission to build great churches and determine the canon of Scripture. But the enemies of God are on the move. Joined by Rex, Flavia's beloved protector who has fought his way out of exile, the two friends cross the empire by land and sea on an epic quest to free the Roman people from the tyranny of the ancient gods. Bristling with tension and undergirded by impeccable historical research, this tale of courage, defiance, and humble submission to God continues the captivating saga of two unlikely allies in the age of imperial Christianity.

Book In Search of Christmas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Morris-Pierce
  • Publisher : CSS Publishing
  • Release : 2002-07
  • ISBN : 0788019163
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book In Search of Christmas written by Elizabeth Morris-Pierce and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2002-07 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of holiday material provides you with a complete collection of resources for drama, worship, and young people. It includes a wide range of resources from across the denominational spectrum. Copying privileges are included for all six segments. Come! See What God Has Done is a Thanksgiving children's event designed to heighten awareness of God's many blessings. Six learning centers -- each including posters, projects, a guided experience, follow-up activities, and a closing prayer -- focus on such topics as families, nature, our religious heritage, and our bodies. Intended for kindergarten through sixth grade, this is an ideal activity for your church school and can be held during a single session. A Chrismon Service portrays the drama of redemption through symbols of Jesus in the form of Christmas ornaments. (The word "Chrismon" is a combination of the words "Christ" and "monogram.") As appropriate scripture passages are read, each symbol is presented and explained; worshipers participate in the service by hanging them on the Chrismon tree. Eighteen designs are included so that you can make your own Chrismons based on such symbols as the Epiphany star, the Christmas rose, and the angel. The ABC's Of Christmas offers four easy programs for Christmas worship, celebrating angels, bells, colors, and gifts. Each incorporates scripture, carols, and simple props together with dramatic readings to create a meaningful worship experience that will linger in the memory long after Christmastime passes. The Angels' Point Of View is a play in two acts that looks at Jesus' conception, birth, and flight into Egypt from their perspective. Originally developed for a junior high Sunday school class, this piece is excellent for older youth and can be performed in a variety of settings. There are thirteen speaking roles, and complete directions for assembling props, costume, and scenery are included. In Search Of Christmas is a light, contemporary drama that intersperses a series of brief dialogues between a husband and wife, two teenagers, and others illustrating how we can lose the real meaning of Christmas with faith-affirming conversations among individuals who have kept the season's true spirit of joy and giving. Roles can be doubled up for the small congregation, and only a few basic props are needed. Last Year In Bethlehem: The Story Of Eli The Shepherd reminds us that the story of Christ's birth is more than a holiday tradition. It combines a dramatic monologue with hymns and candlelight for a moving Christmas Eve worship experience. On the first anniversary of the first Christmas, a gruff but friendly shepherd tells of the night that changed his life. Suggestions for costuming, makeup, and staging are included, along with historical background on shepherds during Jesus' time. O Holy Night brings together scripture, song, and poetic readings to create a touching Christmas Eve worship service that can involve several participants without requiring lengthy rehearsal. It is an especially attractive option for smaller churches without many resources, but this enchanting service will be a glorious experience for any congregation.

But what if a central lesson for all people was to learn instead to embrace many of these paradoxes? In this book, a university president speaks to his students using everyday events from the campus and his personal life urging them to pursue the deep moral virtues that comprise our character; patience, trust, hope, grace, vision and more. To do this he tells them to consider many points of view, choose passionately, but continue openly humble. As a lifetime follower of Jesus, the author exhorts his students and his readers to remember that now we see through a glass darkly, but one day face to face.

Book A Dangerous Report

Download or read book A Dangerous Report written by J. Harold Ellens and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is tightly packed with surprising insights one simply does not normally hear from the pulpit, but yet are so obviously implied in the biblical narratives of Christmas and Easter. Dr Ellens has a unique way of cracking open familiar biblical sentences and stories and spilling out an entirely fresh cornucopia of life-changing insights about the radical nature of the good news about God’s grace. Ideas and metaphors from the Bible that we have heard or read so often that they have become routine and cliché suddenly flower with refreshing new meanings and intimations. Dr Ellens’ carefully and cogently expressed biblical interpretation and sermon oratory incarnate God’s truth and bring to lively new vitality a vivid experience of God as the driving force of Divine Spirit in our personal lives and in history. Preaching has seldom been this engaging, powerful, and spiritually empowering. This warm hearted book is a clear and clarion call for one central theme: God’s radical, uncalculating, unconditional, and universal forgiving grace. Claims for God’s redemptive presence and intent for our world that pulpiteers have often feared, avoided, or failed to see in the center of the gospel are here set forth with unapologetic boldness. Dr Ellens’ trumpet is not muted at any point. Obviously this hearty soul has a passion for the spirit, a stimulating mind, and an informed pastoral appeal for life-changing encounters with the biblical story and of the insinuation of God’s self into human and historical life at Christmas, Easter, and all other times.
