Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson: Poet and Thinker Embodying the modern spirit are either the direct or the indirect result of his attitude toward things of the mind, that it seems worth while to emphasise his individual message once more, even at the risk of repeating much that has been said with more authority. The readers of the present genera tion hardly can turn many of his pages without sur prise that he so indubitably belongs to them that he is so freshly inspiring after half a century of rapidly changing manners and customs. His firm morality and the gracious art with which he has made morality beautiful are as valuable to-day as when his presence in the world gave a personal in terest to his writings. Download or read book Emerson at Home and Abroad Classic Reprint written by Moncure Daniel Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson at Home and Abroad At last the day came when I stood at the door of Emerson. I had entered the Divinity College at Cam bridge, and carried a letter from one of his friends; but I was nervous, and it was some relief to hear he was not at home. His little daughter and son, how ever, brought me an invitation from Mrs. Emerson to return soon, and meantime they took me on a beautiful walk, - a walk amid apple trees, where we sat and told tales in a lovely Lost Bower. I was taken to Emerson by his children and gave him my note of introduction. He remembered, and said, Surely you are my Virginian correspondent. With that he extended his hand and welcomed me with a smile his smile, not to be lightly lost by one it has warmed. For me, who never before had seen a great man, who yet in my minority was cut off from every relative and had alienated every early friend, this wel coming word and smile was the break of a new day. I could not answer. Many years after I read that one in paradise was asked how he got there and replied, One day as Buddha passed by he smiled upon me. Twenty-eight years later, on that spot where I first met Emerson I parted from him to see him no more. It was with the old grasp of hand, and with that smile on his face to win which would at any time have meant to me success. It is before me now, and shall not be changed to a frown by any sentence in this little book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson Vol 2 written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Vol. 2: English Traits the Conduct of Life Nature A man is a centre for nature, running out threads Of rela tion through everything, fluid and solid, material and element al. The earth rolls; every clod and stone comes to the me ridian: so every organ, function, acid, crystal, grain of dust, has its relation to the brain. It waits long, but its turn comes. Each plant has its parasite, and each created thing its lover and poet. Justice has already been done to steam, to iron, to wood, to coal, to loadstone, to iodine, to corn, and cotton but how few materials are yet used by our arts The mass of creatures and of qualities are still hid and expectant. It would seem as if each waited, like the enchanted princess in fairy tales, for a destined human deliverer. Each must be disenchanted, and walk forth to the day in human shape. In the history Of discovery, the ripe and latent truth seems to have fashioned a brain for itself. A magnet must be made man in some Gilbert, or Swedenborg, or Oersted, before the general mind can come to entertain its powers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson Emerson called upon her, she wrote, He came with a sunbeam on his countenance. He is a born gentleman. George William Curtis said, A smile broke over his face like day over the sky, and, At Emerson's house it is always morning. How could it have been otherwise with a man who loved humanity; whose whole life was spent in making the world happier and better; whose every sentence was full of hope and sweetness and courage. Who wrote, To help the young soul, add energy, inspire hope, and blow the coals into a useful flame; to redeem defeat by new thought, by firm action, that is not easy; that is the work of divine men. And he was one of the divine men whose work in life it was to do this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Influence of Emerson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Influence of Emerson Classic Reprint written by William R. Thayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Emerson One truth of vital importance must, therefore, be learned, nothing abides except Spirit. Matter and its accidents under go unintermitted change. Life is fluid, not solid; progressive, not stationary. The soul is. When once this truth has been grasped we wonder no longer why laws, religions, and social customs cannot be permanent. They are dams made to fit one time; the river of Humanity flows through all thes. See, for example, how significant this is when applied to ethics. The ethical codes, one after another, grow too small, and must be cast ofi, or repaired and enlarged. As men's faith in a personal God diminishes, their need of a personal symbol of him diminishes; Christ the Man has more significance than Christ the God. Likewise, many enlightened persons no longer believe in everlasting damnation, a scheme of compensation evidently contrary to all the testimony of life, because it assumes that the universal flux will cease and that the guilty soul will remain in a fixed shape in hell, in spite of the fact that all souls are moving. Moreover, it attaches an absolute value to a human, relative act. Which of us would dare to assert that a single act or a single thought is the summary and completion of his career, or that it is even conceivable that any momentary experience should become solid, unchanged forevermore? Look where we will, development, or unfolding, is going on; no end is reached, or thinkable. The human imagination has drawn a finite, temporal hell to do what it intends shall be an infinite and eternal work. Let us beware of using our foot-rule and hour-glass to measure immeasurable Space and Time. All human theories of retribution must be false if they are false to this law of life namely, Growth, or Being, or Becoming.
