It describes, through his letters and diaries, the day-to-day life of R.S.M. John Kemp of the 76th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, from the time of his landing in Sicily, illness and hospital in Algiers, and the subsequent return to his Regiment in Italy. It tells of the conversion of the Regiment to a field artillery role on the Gothic Line, and of the conflict in the final push north to defeat of the Germans in Italy, followed by the long wait as an army of occupation before returning home on New Year's Eve 1945.

Book Ever your own Johnnie North Africa 1942 43

Download or read book Ever your own Johnnie North Africa 1942 43 written by Nick Kemp and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ever your own, Johnnie, North Africa, 1942-43' is a sequel to 'Ever your own, Johnnie, Britain, 1938-42' and recounts the day-to-day life of R.S.M. John Kemp of the 76th Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, through retrospective accounts and letters written to his wife. It covers the period in his military service from landing in Algiers as part of 'Operation Torch', the Allied Forces' invasion of Vichy French North Africa, until his departure for Sicily under 'Operation Husky'. The book vividly describes experiences of working in a foreign country under wartime conditions, and of the frequent advances to defeat the German and Italian Armies in North Africa. Many of the letters are written to entertain and amuse his wife at home, and to hide the realities of the war that he was experiencing. The book, however, contains notes and commentary to give context to his writing and the campaign as it unfolded as his regiment moved east to Bizerte, and the preparations for the invasion of Sicily.

Book The Gendered Score

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather Laing
  • Publisher : Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
  • Release : 2007-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780754651000
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book The Gendered Score written by Heather Laing and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heather Laing examines, for the first time, the issues of gender and emotion that underpin the classical style of film scoring, but that have until now remained unquestioned and untheorized, thus providing a benchmark for thinking on more recent and alternative styles of scoring. Case studies of specific films provide textual and musical analyses, and the genres of melodrama and the woman's film have been chosen as representative not only of the epitome of the Hollywood scoring style, but also of the narrative association of women, emotion and music. Laing leads to the conclusion that music functions as more than merely a signifier of emotion. Rather, it takes a crucial role in both indicating and determining how emotion is actually understood as part of the construction of gender and its representation in film.

Book British Literature in Transition 1940 1960 Postwar

Download or read book British Literature in Transition 1940 1960 Postwar written by Gill Plain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Postwar' is both a period and a state of mind, a sensibility comprised of hope, fear and fatigue in which British society and its writers paradoxically yearned both for political transformation and a nostalgic re-instatement of past securities. From the Labour landslide victory of 1945 to the emergence of the Cold War and the humiliation of Suez in 1956, this was a period of radical political transformation in Britain and beyond, but these changes resisted literary assimilation. Arguing that writing and history do not map straightforwardly one onto the other, and that the postwar cannot easily be fitted into the explanatory paradigms of modernism or postmodernism, this book offers a more nuanced recognition of what was written and read in the period. From wartime radio writing to 1950s travellers, cold war poetry to radical theatre, magazine cultures to popular fiction, this volume examines important debates that animated postwar Britain.
