Book An Eventful Life

Download or read book An Eventful Life written by Will Parker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Eventful Life is a social history describing the life of a boy who maybe never grew up. The story begins in Will Parkers childhood as he accompanies his mother and father (one of the first travelling picture-show men) through central-western New South Wales, Australia, as they present silent films, films accompanied by vinyl soundtracks, and finally sound films on celluloid. An Eventful Life then follows Will through his teenage years working on sheep and cattle stations and in a city apprenticeship. He joins the Royal Australian Navy, is hospitalized for months with tuberculosis, and undergoes extensive artificial pneumothorax treatments. He then leaves Australia, joins the British Merchant Navy as an engineer, teaches in New Zealand, and finally returns to Sydney, where he marries and has a family. Will completes his high school education and obtains a science degree from the University of New South Wales. He teaches secondary school in Sydney, with a sojourn into management training. He and his wife fully sample small farming and the many facets of animal husbandry before he experiences his wifes gradual decline from Alzheimers/dementia and her hospitalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My unsettled situation caused the former Edition of the work to be so hurriedly written, that many errors escaped notice, which, in the present, I have endeavoured to amend. The two volumes are now thrown into one, forming a continued narrative down to the close of the war, and several incidents added, which were omitted in the first Edition. If in its former state it excited an interest in the public mind, I trust it is now rendered more worthy of its approbation. I am aware that there are still imperfections in it that will require indulgence — an indulgence, however, which, I am persuaded, will be readily conceded to the humble station of. FROM THE BOOK.

Book Flora Lyndsay Or Passages in an Eventful Life

Download or read book Flora Lyndsay Or Passages in an Eventful Life written by Susanna Moodie and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flora Lyndsay is Susanna Moodie’s prequel to Roughing it in the Bush and Life in the Clearings. Though Moodie fictionalizes herself in the context of this novel, Flora Lyndsay remains a close personalized record of her family’s experiences in planning their emigration and crossing the Atlantic. Despite the limited critical attention it receives, Flora Lyndsay reveals Moodie’s style, her sense of form, and her distinctive approach to writing female autobiography. This edition, complete with a wide corpus of endnotes, an extensive list of emendations, and a critical introduction, helps address this oversight and gives a closer look at the iconic phenomenon that is Susanna Moodie.

Francis O'Neill left Ireland in 1865. After five years traveling the world as a sailor, he and his family settled in Chicago just shortly before the Great Fire of 1871. His memoir also brings to life the challenges involved in succeeding in a new land, providing for his family, and integrating into a new culture. Francis O'Neill serves as a fine documentarian of the Irish immigrant experience in Chicago.

Captured by the German SS, spent 1 years of confinement in camps, liberated in 1945. During confinement they were starved, beaten, humiliated and required to work long hours. As was typical of these camps they were held in lines for inspection and counting twice a day and these inspection sessions could last for hours and all the while being exposed to harsh weather. The treatment of the prisoners was so extreme that many of them wanted to die rather than go on and often they would ask to be shot. Specific ways Joe was able to resist the forces that were designed to ultimately crush him were; possessing a faith in God, he said to one of the guards: you can kill my body but you will never get my spirit, supporting each other in a small secret group prevented isolation and empowered people in the face of adversity and oppression, giving hope to others so they would not give up helped give him hope too. Joes stories can mentor others on how to increase chances of survival in extreme situations.

Book So As I Was Saying

Download or read book So As I Was Saying written by Frank Mankiewicz and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I first met Robert Kennedy because I spoke Spanish. I spoke Spanish because the U.S. Army taught me that before sending me to France, Belgium, and Germany to fight Hitler’s Army. This makes complete sense if you are familiar with military bureaucracy.” Such is the trademark wit of Frank Mankiewicz. With his dry sense of humor and self-deprecating humility—despite his many accomplishments—Frank’s voice speaks from the pages of So as I was Saying... in a way that is both conversational and profound. Before he died in 2014 Frank’s fascinating life took him from Beverly Hills to the battlefields of Europe; from the halls of power in Washington D.C. to the far corners of the world. A lifelong student of humanity and mentor to many, including presidents, Frank was a loving father, husband, and friend, and his legacy is will endure for generations. Born into Hollywood royalty but determined to make his own way, Frank served in World War Two, wrote speeches for Robert Kennedy, ran a presidential campaign, carried messages to Fidel Castro, served as president of National Public Radio (helping create Morning Edition), and as regional director for the Peace Corps. Naturally such a long and interesting life gave rise to a myriad of opinions, and Frank was not afraid to share them. In this intriguing, insightful, and often humorous memoir, Frank recalls his favorite memories while sharing his opinions on everything from Zionism to smartphones. Imbued with the personality of one of the twentieth century’s most gifted raconteurs, So As I Was Saying... invokes nostalgia for the past even as it gives hope for the future.
