Book Greek Myths in Roman Art and Culture

Download or read book Greek Myths in Roman Art and Culture written by Zahra Newby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of episodes from Greek mythology are widespread in Roman art, appearing in sculptural groups, mosaics, paintings and reliefs. They attest to Rome's enduring fascination with Greek culture, and its desire to absorb and reframe that culture for new ends. This book provides a comprehensive account of the meanings of Greek myth across the spectrum of Roman art, including public, domestic and funerary contexts. It argues that myths, in addition to functioning as signifiers of a patron's education or paideia, played an important role as rhetorical and didactic exempla. The changing use of mythological imagery in domestic and funerary art in particular reveals an important shift in Roman values and senses of identity across the period of the first two centuries AD, and in the ways that Greek culture was turned to serve Roman values.

Book The American Civil War and the Hollywood War Film

Download or read book The American Civil War and the Hollywood War Film written by John Trafton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout film history, war films have been in constant dialogue with both previous depictions of war and contemporary debates and technology. War films remember older war film cycles and draw upon the resources of the present day to say something new about the nature of war. The American Civil War was viscerally documented through large-scale panorama paintings, still photography, and soldier testimonials, leaving behind representational principles that would later inform the development of the war film genre from the silent era up to the present. This book explores how each of these representational modes cemented different formulas for providing war stories with emotional content.

Book One Armed Wonder

Download or read book One Armed Wonder written by William C. Kashatus and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1945 Pete Gray, who had lost his right arm in a childhood accident, made his debut with the St. Louis Browns of the American League. Dubbed the "One-Amed Wonder" by sportswriters, Gray was a controversial figure from the moment he stepped on a major league diamond. Club owners saw him as a gate attraction for war-weary baseball fans; some of his teammates openly questioned his ability and felt that he cost them a chance to capture a second consecutive pennant. Gray was left to wonder just how good a ballplayer he really was. Though some may have doubted Gray's ability, no one questioned the cantankerous outfielder's desire to reach the major leagues. From the coalfields of northeastern Pennsylvania, Pete Gray fought his way through the minor leagues with single-minded determination. Despite his missing arm, he was the most valuable player of the minor league's Southern Association in 1944. His on-field exploits and relentless fire became an inspiration to the many servicemen who returned from the battlefields of World War II with missing limbs.

Download or read book Twelve Vile Tales written by Preston Mulroy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've met lots of folks in lots of situations and, after a while, people seem to just open up to me. Call it a gift if you like but I have to tell you; sometimes I don't want to listen. So I do the polite thing which usually ends up in the poor soul thanking me for allowing them to unburden their problems. Often they will berate the fact that no one would believe them anyway. I always respond in the same way which is to tell them to write it down. That way, even if no one believes you, at least you've got a good yarn to show for it. They most often agree but then ask me write the story although sometimes they want to write it in their own words. The result is a bit of a mish mash of styles I suppose but I like to think that gives them authenticity.

However, our history books in the United States have always been incomplete for the African Americans. Why? Because in the beginning days of Negroes (as they were called in those days), they were considered nothing but property. They had no history or voice, therefore were not felt to be important by the writers of history. So the Afro-American history was omitted and passed over. This book explores the omitted African American history through a fictional character, the Unknown Voice. Our journey unveils spectacular creations, amazing acts, outstanding accomplishments, disturbing acts, catastrophic events, and the advancement of a culture. We will give an ear to the unknown voice destined to be heard.

As the first millennium closes, Anglo-Saxon England is gripped by fear and expectation of the end of the world. But an ancient prophesy foretells a hero, a man of destiny who will redeem the people. But who is he, and can he be found in time, as Viking raiders plan invasion and conquest? The second of his "Mercian Trilogy" series, this new story by Martin Wall is based on two Anglo-Saxon sagas which were lost after the Norman conquest --- the saga of Edmund Ironside, and the saga of Edric Streona, the most dastardly villain in English history. The darkest period of Anglo-Saxon times, the disastrous reign of King Ethelred "the unready" forms the backdrop for this epic tale of one man's quest as he traverses a country stricken by internal division, intrigue, and invasion by the Vikings.

Book The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours

Download or read book The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours written by Gregory Nagy and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a hero? The ancient Greeks who gave us Achilles and Odysseus had a very different understanding of the term than we do today. Based on the legendary Harvard course that Gregory Nagy has taught for well over thirty years, The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours explores the roots of Western civilization and offers a masterclass in classical Greek literature. We meet the epic heroes of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, but Nagy also considers the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the songs of Sappho and Pindar, and the dialogues of Plato. Herodotus once said that to read Homer was to be a civilized person. To discover Nagy’s Homer is to be twice civilized. “Fascinating, often ingenious... A valuable synthesis of research finessed over thirty years.” —Times Literary Supplement “Nagy exuberantly reminds his readers that heroes—mortal strivers against fate, against monsters, and...against death itself—form the heart of Greek literature... [He brings] in every variation on the Greek hero, from the wily Theseus to the brawny Hercules to the ‘monolithic’ Achilles to the valiantly conflicted Oedipus.” —Steve Donoghue, Open Letters Monthly
