Book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET

Download or read book Remote Sensing of Evapotranspiration ET written by Pradeep Wagle and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration (ET) is a critical component of the water and energy balances, and the number of remote sensing-based ET products and estimation methods has increased in recent years. Various aspects of remote sensing of ET are reported in the 11 papers published in this book. The major research areas covered by this book include inter-comparison and performance evaluation of widely used one- and two-source energy balance models, a new dual-source model (Soil Plant Atmosphere and Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration, SPARSE), and a process-based model (ETMonitor); assessment of multi-source (e.g., remote sensing, reanalysis, and land surface model) ET products; development or improvement of data fusion frameworks to predict continuous daily ET at a high spatial resolution (field-scale or 30 m) by fusing the advanced spaceborne thermal emission reflectance radiometer (ASTER), the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Landsat data; and investigating uncertainties in ET estimates using an ET ensemble composed of several land surface models and diagnostic datasets. The effects of the differences between ET products on water resources and ecosystem management were also investigated. More accurate ET estimates and improved understanding of remotely sensed ET products are crucial for maximizing crop productivity while minimizing water losses and management costs.

Book Evapotranspiration Estimation

Download or read book Evapotranspiration Estimation written by Clayton S. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focused on estimating evapotranspiration (i.e., the amount of water vaporizing into the atmosphere through processes of surface evaporation and plant transpiration) under both theoretical and actual conditions. There were two study areas involved: one, on a large scale where 704 agriculturally-representative, electronic weather stations were used to evaluate the drivers and calculated reference evapotranspiration of a NASA gridded weather forcing model in the 17 western states in the contiguous U.S.; and two, transpiration of invasive saltcedar (Tamarix sp.) in the floodplain of the lower Colorado River, California, with Bowen ratio, eddy covariance, and groundwater fluxes. In this study, a fire destroyed the saltcedar forest, which allowed comparison of evapotranspiration before and after\ this event Comparison of the input weather parameters showed some variance between the electronic weather stations and the gridded model, but calculated reference evapotranspiration performed well by relying on the better input and more highly weighed variables of air temperature and downward shortwave radiation. Only in the southern portions of California, Arizona, and New Mexico were the evapotranspiration estimates using the gridded dataset not well correlated with the electronic weather stations and not recommended for prediction. Saltcedar evapotranspiration was found to match more recent and conservative estimates for the phreatophyte than what was historically portrayed in the literature. Horizontal advection from the surrounding desert was also observed to affect the riparian energy balance. Annual average total evapotranspiration before a fire varied from 0.60-1.44 meters/year to 0.25-1.00 meters/year post fire.

Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration (ET) is the total amount of water lost by plant transpiration and soil evaporation. Since about 90% of precipitation received in semi-arid and sub-humid climates is lost to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration, accurate estimations of ET are of crucial need for climate studies, weather forecasts, hydrological surveys, ecological monitoring, and water resource management. This book reviews research on new developments in all areas of evapotranspiration application. It examines the evapotranspiration processes under different environmental and climatic conditions as well as the different methods for modeling and measurement of evapotranspiration at both local and regional scales.

Book A Cross Comparison of Reference Evapotranspiration Models Using Field Observations

Download or read book A Cross Comparison of Reference Evapotranspiration Models Using Field Observations written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural systems of the earth are inter - dependant processes (and components of the coupled earth system) that rely heavily on environmental, meteorological, and hydrologic variables. The functions of the biosphere are influenced by many variables and contingencies, of which, the combined processes of evaporation and transpiration are extremely vital. Evapotranspiration (ET) estimation methodologies from empirical modeling to remote sensing have been evaluated on many occasions, by numerous organizations and individual researchers. One purpose of this research is to determine the ability of evapotranspiration formulations to replicate site specific field observations. In order to accomplish this objective, synthesis of evapotranspiration data for different environmental conditions was conducted over various landscapes. A secondary objective was to determine the impact of volumetric soil moisture on ET estimation schemes. To accomplish this, volumetric soil moisture observations were analyzed over each of the landscapes during the International H2O Project 2002 study period. A review of previous ET estimation research projects provided insight into the understood elements, and a basis for addressing the unknowns associated with ET estimation. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has addressed the uncertainties associated with evapotranspiration on several occasions, but most specifically and extensively in Manual 70. Alternative ET estimation methodologies were considered and addressed in order to clarify the applicability of both models and remote sensing approaches. The primary focus of the project is centered on the International H2O Project 2002. By utilizing data from nine NCAR research stations over the Southern Great Plains region, ET estimation algorithms were tested against field observations. These tests showed the agreements of such equations as the ASCE Penman - Monteith with the ET values collected from each of the sites. The la.

Book Current Perspective to Predict Actual Evapotranspiration

Download or read book Current Perspective to Predict Actual Evapotranspiration written by Daniel Bucur and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration is the largest outgoing water flux from the Earth's surface; its accurate quantification is critical for the crop development in conditions of the climate changes from recent decades, and it can contribute to a greater understanding of a range of agricultural ecosystem processes. To evaluate the hydric requirements of the crops, it was agreed that they should be reported to a maximum global evapotranspiration called potential evapotranspiration. To estimate this variable, a variety of methods were developed, each with its benefits as well as trade-offs. Their use, however, is laborious due to their complexity and of the large number of parameters required. In this book, specialists' concerns worldwide to develop simple but reliable methodologies - with less data requirement - which will give accurate and appropriate results - are presented. In addition, a study of the physics of the moisture evaporation process from porous media to elucidate what are the mechanisms of moisture migration from granular biopesticides is presented in the last chapter.

Book Evapotranspiration in the Soil Plant Atmosphere System

Download or read book Evapotranspiration in the Soil Plant Atmosphere System written by Viliam Novak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evapotranspiration and its components (evaporation and transpiration) as a process is one of the basic terms of Earth's water balance; its importance is accented by the fact that transpiration is the vital element of the biomass production process. The second important property of evapotranspiration is its extreme consumption of solar energy, thus controlling the temperature of the atmosphere and creating favourable conditions for life. Evapotranspiration as an energy consuming process is also the connection between the energy and mass cycles of the Earth. Evapotranspiration is a process performing in the Soil–Plant –Atmosphere System (SPAS); therefore this book is presenting and quantifying it as a catenary process, describing transport of water in the soil, including root extraction patterns and methods of its evaluation. Transport of water through the plant and from the canopy to the atmosphere is also described and quantified. A variety of evapotranspiration (and its components evaporation and transpiration) calculation methods are described, starting from empirical methods up to the most sophisticated ones based on the solution of the transport equations of water and energy in the SPAS. The most important (and widely used) calculation method - modified Penman–Monteith method is described in details, ready to be used with data in the book only. Water balance method of evapotranspiration estimation as well as sap flow method description can be found in the book as well. The book can be used by hydrologists, biologists, meteorologists and other specialists as well as by ecology students. Key themes: soil hydrology – evapotranspiration – hydropedology– plant physiology – water movement in soils – evaporation – transpiration Dr. Viliam Novák is a water resources scientist at the Institute of Hydrology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava (Slovakia).
