Book Treatise on Solid State Chemistry

Download or read book Treatise on Solid State Chemistry written by N. Hannay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter-century has been marked by the extremely rapid growth of the solid-state sciences. They include what is now the largest subfield of physics, and the materials engineering sciences have likewise flourished. And, playing an active role throughout this vast area of science and engineer ing have been very large numbers of chemists. Yet, even though the role of chemistry in the solid-state sciences has been a vital one and the solid-state sciences have, in turn, made enormous contributions to chemical thought, solid-state chemistry has not been recognized by the general body of chemists as a major subfield of chemistry. Solid-state chemistry is not even well defined as to content. Some, for example, would have it include only the quantum chemistry of solids and would reject thermodynamics and phase equilibria; this is nonsense. Solid-state chemistry has many facets, and one of the purposes of this Treatise is to help define the field. Perhaps the most general characteristic of solid-state chemistry, and one which helps differentiate it from solid-state physics, is its focus on the chemical composition and atomic configuration of real solids and on the relationship of composition and structure to the chemical and physical properties of the solid. Real solids are usually extremely complex and exhibit almost infinite variety in their compositional and structural features.

Book excerpt: In the last decade or so the growth of single crystals has assumed enormous importance for both academic research, and technology (particu larly in the field of 'electronics'). The range of fields involved is great: from electro-optics to metal corrosion, from semiconductors to magnetic bubble materials-one can add to the list almost indefinitely. However, while the general principles of crystal growth can be applied aImost right across the board, it turns out that the precise way in which one can grow a particular crystal best varies considerably from material to material. This, of course, is to emphasise the obvious; nonetheless, except in specialised papers in the scientific litera ture , little attempt seems to have been made to deal in any detail with the causes of the difficulties in growing particular kinds of materials and with methods of circumventing them. These specialised papers may be inaccessible, and in any case cannot be, usually, very broad in scope or detailed in treatment simply because of the pressure to keep papers short. And unfortunately few specialised monographs seem to have been produced. These points and others similar emerged repeatedly in discussions with crystal growers from aU parts of the World and indicated that there was a need for a publication which would deal in detail with problems and techniques for specialised areas of crystal growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook facilitates the selection, design and operation of large-scale industrial crystallizers that process crystals with the proper size distribution, shape and purity sought - including cooling, evaporation, drowning-out reaction, melt, and related crystallization techniques. This new edition offers new results on direct-contact cooling crystallization. It lists the properties of over 170 organic and inorganic crystallization systems.

Book Colloid and Interface Science V3

Download or read book Colloid and Interface Science V3 written by Milton Kerker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colloid and Interface Science, Volume III: Adsorption, Catalysis, Solid Surfaces, Wetting, Surface Tension, and Water covers the proceedings of the International Conference on Colloids and Surfaces, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 21-25, 1976. The conference is sponsored jointly by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Division and the 50th Colloid and Surface Science Symposium. This volume contains 56 chapters that cover the subjects of adsorption, catalysis, solid surfaces, wetting, surface tension, and water. Other topics discussed include chemisorption; analytical methods for surface analysis; reaction kinetics; polymeric colloid systems; hydrogel-water interface; and the effect of various parameters, such as temperature and pressure. The concluding chapters explore surface and interfacial tension measurement, capillarity, thermal expansion of water, and heat capacity of vicinal water.

Book Chemical Vapor Deposition

    Book Details:
  • Author : S Neralla
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2016-08-31
  • ISBN : 9535125729

Download or read book Chemical Vapor Deposition written by S Neralla and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods and recent advances in developing novel materials for application in various fields. CVD has now evolved into the most widely used technique for growth of thin films in electronics industry. Several books on CVD methods have emerged in the past, and thus the scope of this book goes beyond providing fundamentals of the CVD process. Some of the chapters included highlight current limitations in the CVD methods and offer alternatives in developing coatings through overcoming these limitations.

Book Surface and Defect Properties of Solids Volume 5

Download or read book Surface and Defect Properties of Solids Volume 5 written by and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 1972 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
