Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many counties can boast of having Georgia's first female sheriff and a town known as the "fruitcake capital of the world"? These distinctions, and many others, make Evans County unique. Evans, the 150th of Georgia's 159 counties, was created in 1914 from parts of Bulloch and Tattnall Counties. Its development was closely linked with agriculture and the growth of railroads, and the area towns of Daisy, Claxton, Hagan, and Bellville all began as train depots. Although Evans is one of Georgia's later and smaller counties, it offers a fine example of rural progress and friendly communities. As Evans County enters its centennial year, there is much to celebrate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houses of Heart Pine - A Survey of the Antebellum Architecture of Evans County, Ga. Though small in number, the antebellum houses of Evans County provide some notable examples of vernacular rural architecture. Despite the existence of these historic houses, there has never been a comprehensive survey of them until now. Col. (Ret.) Pharris Johnson has completed a well-documented survey that is available in book form. The genesis of the project was a thesis Johnson completed while a student of historic preservation at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Johnson explained, "I've always been interested in architecture and local history. This project gave me an opportunity to examine building types, construction techniques, and histories of the families involved in building the houses." He commented further, "Since Evans County was formed from Tattnall and Bulloch counties in 1914, the pre-Civil War architecture of Evans is really that of its parent counties." Johnson, who lives on a farm in Bellville in Evans County, spent numerous weekends completing the field survey on the nine antebellum structures he found. His excellent book includes measured floor plans, results of extensive documentary research, and 229 illustrations. The book is published under the auspices of the Evans County Historical Society. It is available through Amazon.com and Bernie's Store in Bellville.

Over its history, 75 of the state's counties have suffered 109 events resulting in the loss or severe damage of their courthouse or court offices. This book documents those destructive events, including the date, time, circumstance, and impact on records. Each county narrative is supported by historical accounts from witnesses, newspapers, and legal documents. Maps show the geographic extent of major courthouse fires. Record losses are described in general terms, helping researchers understand which events are most likely to affect their work.

The epilogue ties everything together with the latest research in support of the strategies implemented.
