Book excerpt: Comprehensive and richly illustrated, Close Harmony traces the development of the music known as southern gospel from its antebellum origins to its twentieth-century emergence as a vibrant musical industry driven by the world of radio, television, recordings, and concert promotions. Marked by smooth, tight harmonies and a lyrical focus on the message of Christian salvation, southern gospel--particularly the white gospel quartet tradition--had its roots in nineteenth-century shape-note singing. The spread of white gospel music is intricately connected to the people who based their livelihoods on it, and Close Harmony is filled with the stories of artists and groups such as Frank Stamps, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the Blackwood Brothers, the Rangers, the Swanee River Boys, the Statesmen, and the Oak Ridge Boys. The book also explores changing relations between black and white artists and shows how, following the civil rights movement, white gospel was influenced by black gospel, bluegrass, rock, metal, and, later, rap. With Christian music sales topping the $600 million mark at the close of the twentieth century, Close Harmony explores the history of an important and influential segment of the thriving gospel industry.

Book excerpt: The Reformation-era writings that make up the Lutheran Confessions remain lively resources for Christian ministry and mission today. Because each of the documents within the Book of Concord was written with a specific context and rhetorical purpose in mind, each has its own compelling story and objectives. Luther’s catechisms present the faith for daily life at the grass-roots level, with teaching elements that we might now view as typical of social media and multimedia. The Augsburg Confession and its Apology provide an adaptable foundation for preaching, teaching, church organization, and dialogue that is rooted in the promise of Christ, received through faith. Fifteen years after the Diet of Worms, the Smalcald Articles reveal yet another “Here I stand” moment for Luther. Finally, the Formula of Concord shows how the next generations of Lutherans used collaboration and consensus as they wrestled with important themes of faith and life. In summary, as these texts engage us with their stories, they invite us to consider what is most important about our journeys of faith and Christian witness in today’s twenty-first-century contexts.

Book The Pietist Impulse in Christianity

Download or read book The Pietist Impulse in Christianity written by G William Carlson and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pietism is a reform movement originating among German Lutherans in the 17th century. It focused on personal faith, reacting against Lutheran Church's emphasis on doctrine and theology over Christian living. The movement quickly expanded, exerting anenormous influence on various forms of Christianity, and became concerned with social and educational matters. Indeed, Piestists showed a strong interest in issues of social and ecclesial reform, the nature of history and historical inquiry, the shape and purpose of theology and theological education, the missional task of the church, and social justice and political engagement. Though, the movement remained largely misunderstood, especially in Anglo-American contexts: negative stereotypes depicted Pietism as a quietist and sectarian form of religion, merely concerned with the 'pious soul and its God'. The main proposal of the editors of this volume is to correct this misunderstanding: assembling a deep collection of essays written by scholars from a variety of fields, this work demonstrates that Piestism was a movement characterized by great depth and originality. Besides, they show the vitality and impulse of Pietism today and emphasize the ongoing relevance of the movement for contemporary problems and questions.

Book Harmony in the Body

Download or read book Harmony in the Body written by Gilbert Asamoah and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-03-09 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several generations, the Body of Christ has been persistently troubled with disharmony among believers and denominations. On the one hand is the prayer of the Lord Jesus for unity in John Chapter 17. On the other hand is the strife and disunity that often characterize our relationships with one another within His Body. The mystery of the Body of Christ has often been discussed among believers with respect to the union between the Head, namely Christ, and His Body, the Church. “Harmony in the Body” presents another often underemphasized aspect which is the interrelationships among members of the Body of Christ. This book challenges the reader to appreciate the fact that unity in the Body of Christ also requires that its members see each other as one spiritual body. This has implications for all levels of Christian profession, organization and ministry. “Harmony in the Body” speaks directly to interrelationships among Christians in small or large group settings. It presents how the message of Christ should govern the daily interactions among Christians at the local church level. It also provides insights for resolving denominational tensions. Local pastors will find this book a useful tool as they nurture zealous, up-and-coming Christians within the proper boundaries of church organizations and ministries. This book will urge every Christian to better appreciate their place in the Body of Christ and how their role in the Great Commission fits into the overall plan and purpose of God.

Book The Harmony Of The Gospels

  • Publisher : Jazzybee Verlag
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 3849621065
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book The Harmony Of The Gospels written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.

The first preachers of this gospel were the apostles, who beheld our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in person when He was yet present in the flesh. Aeterna Press

Download or read book Simple Harmony written by Larry Duggins and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many have experienced Christianity as a confusing list of restrictive rules designed to wring all of the joy out of life. Others seek to live as Christians without a clear understanding of what the focus of a Christian life should be, leaving them to wonder if Jesus had more in mind than regular Sunday morning worship attendance. What does a healthy Christian life look like? Larry Duggins has molded three anchor scriptures into a simple model of balanced Christian life using the Celtic cross as an illustration. Duggins believes that the Greatest Commandment, the Hymn of Kenosis, and the Prayer of Unity combine to guide a life of worship, sharing, service, and community that leads to a closer relationship with God. This simple, engaging book includes questions for reflection and discussion, and is appropriate for both the curious and the committed. This second edition includes a new introduction and two new chapters addressing the question of balance and the nature of the “other.”
