Book Evaluations of the Generalized Area and The Cap Alpha Nu Methods of Interpreting Pulsed Neutron Measurements for Subcritical Reactivity

Download or read book Evaluations of the Generalized Area and The Cap Alpha Nu Methods of Interpreting Pulsed Neutron Measurements for Subcritical Reactivity written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Generalized Area and .cap alpha./.nu. Methods of interpretation of pulsed-neutron measurements for subcritical reactivity were found to minimize the error caused by source-induced harmonics and kinetic distortion. The use of multiple neutron detectors distributed over the core of the reactor in the pulsed source measurements is recommended for increased accuracy of interpretation. The measured data are reduced to a reported value of the subcritical reactivity by the use of numerical solutions to the reactor eigenvalue problems. In the Generalized Area Method, the numerical solution provides an estimate of the static adjoint function which is used to weight the prompt and delayed neutron flux integrals measured in the experiment. These weighted integrals are then used to form the subcritical reactivity. In the .cap alpha./.nu. Method, the static eigenequation solved by numerical methods is transformed to a time eigenequation to provide a bridge between the measured decay constant of the fundamental mode and the subcritical static reactivity. Also, the transformation provides a means of normalizing the reported static reactivity. The evaluations were performed by applying both methods to numerical data generated by one-dimensional, space--time diffusion theory for which k/sub eff/ was known precisely. The Generalized Area Method was found to deduce reasonably accurate reactivity values from simulations of data from pulsed-neutron experiments in both large and small reflected reactors. The errors from the true reactivity ranged from +3% to -7% in rho at k/sub eff/ = 0.9. However, the single-detector Sjoestrand analysis failed badly for all pulsing simulations except for that of the small reactor with the source at the center of the core. Errors from the true reactivity ranged from +90% to -260% in rho at k/sub eff/ = 0.9. The .cap alpha./.nu. Method was applicable only to the small-reactor simulation where the error was -1% in rho at k/sub eff/ = 0.9.

Book excerpt: This text presents the theory and methods of prediction that are the heart of nuclear reactor safety. Time-dependent reactor behavior is explained in both mathematical and physical terms. This book also explains the logic behind the working formulas and calculational methods for reactor transients and illustrates typical dynamic responses. The classical concept of point kinetics is developed in three steps, with discussion of various solutions to kinetics problems. Each chapter includes homework problems and review questions.

Book Neutron Fluctuations

Download or read book Neutron Fluctuations written by Imre Pazsit and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-10-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport of neutrons in a multiplying system is an area of branching processes with a clear formalism. Neutron Fluctuations presents an account of the mathematical tools used in describing branching processes, which are then used to derive a large number of properties of the neutron distribution in multiplying systems with or without an external source. In the second part of the book, the theory is applied to the description of the neutron fluctuations in nuclear reactor cores as well as in small samples of fissile material. The question of how to extract information about the system under study is discussed. In particular the measurement of the reactivity of subcritical cores, driven with various Poisson and non-Poisson (pulsed) sources, and the identification of fissile material samples, is illustrated. The book gives pragmatic information for those planning and executing and evaluating experiments on such systems. Gives a complete treatise of the mathematics of branching particle processes, and in particular neutron fluctuations, in a self-contained manner The first monograph containing the theory and application of neutron fluctuations in low power ADS (spallation and pulsed sources) Suitable as a tutorial and handbook/reference book for scientists and graduate students One of the authors is the founder of the mathematical theory of neutron fluctuations in zero power systems
