Book Evaluation of Wearing Surface Systems for the Orthotropic Steel Deck of the San Mateo Hayward Bridge

Download or read book Evaluation of Wearing Surface Systems for the Orthotropic Steel Deck of the San Mateo Hayward Bridge written by Ravi Sankar Chamarthi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance under static and fatigue loads are evaluated for two different wearing surfaces for possible use on the steel orthotropic deck of San Mateo Hayward Bridge in the bay area of California. The two wearing surface materials studied include a 2" thick (nominal) premixed polyester concrete (PC) and a 2" thick (nominal) epoxy asphalt concrete (EAC). Flexural specimens that comprise a "steel-plate - wearing surface" composite simulating the surfacing system and geometry specific to the orthotropic steel deck of the San Mateo Hayward Bridge are used for the static and fatigue tests. Flexural tests were conducted at different dynamic loading frequencies (0.0167, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 and 15.0 Hz) and at several different temperatures (20.°F- 120°F) to study the temperature dependency and loading rate effects. Following these tests, the fatigue tests were conducted on replicate EAC and PC composite specimens at each of room (70°F), cold (32°F) and hot (120°F) temperatures. Both wearing surface systems performed well at the cold temperatures, surviving 10 million fatigue cycles. Both wearing surfaces experienced cracking at the room and hot temperatures prior to 10 million cycles and these cracks did not result in wearing surface delamination or local debonding. The comparative study in this exhaustive laboratory investigation has shown that the 2" thick PC material could perform equally well as the original EAC wearing surface existing on San Mateo Hayward Bridge.

Book Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks

Download or read book Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks written by Timothy Russell Gurney and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broadly-based research programme on orthotropic steel bridge decks, led by D.E. Nunn, was carried out between 1963 and 1987 covering traffic usage, surfacing and fatigue. Initially the work was predictive, determining the main variables and establishing the basis of a fatigue assessment methods. Following the discovery of fatigue cracks in service, methods of repair and strengthening were developed. This work has been recorded in internal reports, but much of it has not been generally available until publication of this review. Experimental results are presented and recommendations given for the fatigue classification of welded joints in orthotropic decks.

Book Bridge Design and Evaluation

Download or read book Bridge Design and Evaluation written by Gongkang Fu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A succinct, real-world approach to complete bridge system design and evaluation Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LRFR) are design and evaluation methods that have replaced or offered alternatives to other traditional methods as the new standards for designing and load-rating U.S. highway bridges. Bridge Design and Evaluation covers complete bridge systems (substructure and superstructure) in one succinct, manageable package. It presents real-world bridge examples demonstrating both their design and evaluation using LRFD and LRFR. Designed for a 3- to 4-credit undergraduate or graduate-level course, it presents the fundamentals of the topic without expanding needlessly into advanced or specialized topics. Important features include: Exclusive focus on LRFD and LRFR Hundreds of photographs and figures of real bridges to connect the theoretical with the practical Design and evaluation examples from real bridges including actual bridge plans and drawings and design methodologies Numerous exercise problems Specific design for a 3- to 4-credit course at the undergraduate or graduate level The only bridge engineering textbook to cover the important topics of bridge evaluation and rating Bridge Design and Evaluation is the most up-to-date and inclusive introduction available for students in civil engineering specializing in structural and transportation engineering.

Book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Concrete Bridge Decks written by Richard J. Irwin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of protective coatings for bridge decks is evaluated. Applications to bridges on the New York State highway system from 1961 through 1967 included 1) surface overlays, 2) membranes between the structural slab and bituminous wearing course, and 3) surface sealants. Overlays and membranes consisted of epoxies, polyesters, polyurethanes, latexes, neoprenes, silicone rubbers, and asphalt cutbacks. Surface sealants included silicones, distillate oils, and linseed oil. None of the surface overlays lasted more than 2 to 3 yr. However, a flexible polyester resin with fiber glass has provided satisfactory service for 1-1/2 yr and will remain under observation. Leakage of box-girder bridges with a membrane was primarily due to shear-key construction (since modified), while the same materials applied to composite bridges were associated with leakage that could not be explained. A more comprehensive survey of membranes is planned. Silicone and distillate oil sealants on non-air-entrained concrete did not improve long-term durability. Air-entrained concrete, both with and without linseed oil treatment, showed no evidence of deterioration after 4 yr of exposure.
