Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to investigate the high cycle fatigue behavior of a titanium alloy using an ultrasonic fatigue system. Fatigue testing up to one billion cycles under fully reversed loading conditions was performed to determine the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V. Endurance limit results were compared to similar data generated on conventional servohydraulic test systems and electromagnetic shaker systems to determine if there are any frequency effects. In addition, specimens were tested with and without cooling air to determine the effects of temperature on the fatigue behavior. Results indicate that the fatigue strength determined from ultrasonic testing was consistent with conventional testing. However, preliminary results indicate that cooling air may increase the fatigue limit stress at very long lives.

Book excerpt: High cycle fatigue data of unnotched Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo revealed no change in fatigue strength at 900 F compared to room temperature, 400 F, and 700 F. At 1000 F, the decrease in fatigue strength from that at 900 F and below becomes noticeable. At 1200 F the decrease is significant. The fatigue strength-life curve of specimens coated with electroless nickel and diffusion bonded, which were tested at 1000 F, falls midway between results of uncoated specimens tested at 1000 F and 1200 F. Microstructural changes occurring with time, at temperature, indicate a refinement of structure. Fractography reveals three distinct areas: an initial radial area which is a mixed mode of quasi-cleavage and intergranular fracture; followed by a radial fibrous zone, the result of dimpled fracture; and finally a shear lip which occurs by shear fracture. The extent of this effect on the fatigue properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in small diameter bar (0.625 in., 15.875 mm) was studied. Microstructural variations were produced by heat treating from 1550 to 1950 F at 100 F intervals. Three different cooling rates (furnace cooling, air cooling, and water quenching) were employed for each temperature. The room-temperature tensile, smooth, and notch-fatigue properties were evaluated for each thermal condition.
