Book Evaluation of Uranium and Plutonium Internal Standards

Download or read book Evaluation of Uranium and Plutonium Internal Standards written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two internal standards have been synthesized and evaluated for application in mass spectrometric analysis of uranium. Each standard is a mixture of highly enriched 233U and 236U. One is used to refine 235U/238U ratio measurements and the other for isotope dilution applications. An internal standard consisting of a mixture of 242Pu and 244Pu has been characterized for use in plutonium analyses. Precisions obtainable on pulse-counting instruments have been improved to about 0.1%. 21 refs., 13 tabs.

Book excerpt: An experiment conducted jointly by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the COGEMA reprocessing facility at LaHague, France, the French Center for Nuclear Studies at Saclay, and ORNL is nearing completion. The aim of this experiment is to evaluate the use of internal standards when applied under field conditions to spent fuel dissolver solutions. Samples were taken at LaHague and shipped to Saclay, the IAEA in Vienna, and ORNL. Both resin beads and dried residues were shipped. ORNL has analyzed plutonium and uranium from these samples with good results: external precisions for uranium concentrations were +-0.06% and for plutonium +-0.2%. Copies of our report sheets are given in the appendices. 17 refs., 10 tabs.

Book Analytical Review of Minimum Critical Mass Values for Selected Uranium and Plutonium Materials

Download or read book Analytical Review of Minimum Critical Mass Values for Selected Uranium and Plutonium Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current subcritical limits for a number of uranium and plutonium materials (metals and compounds) as given in the ANSI/ANS standards for criticality safety are based on evaluations performed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This paper presents the results of an analytical study of the minimum critical mass values for a set of materials using current codes and standard cross section sets. This work is meant to produce a consistent set of minimum critical mass values that can form the basis for adding new materials to the single-parameter tables in ANSI/ANS-8.1. Minimum critical mass results are presented for bare and water reflected full-density spheres and for full density moist (1.5 wt-% water) as calculated with KENO-Va, MCNP4A and ONEDANT. Calculations were also performed for both dry and moist materials at one-half density. Some KENO calculations were repeated using several cross section sets to examine potential bias differences. The results of the calculations were compared to the currently accepted subcritical limits. The calculated minimum critical mass values are reasonably consistent for the three codes, and differences most likely reflect differences in the cross section sets. The results are also consistent with values given in ANSI/ANS-8.1. 3 refs., 2 tabs.

Book Update on the Chemical Thermodynamics of Uranium Neptunium Plutonium Americium and Technetium

Download or read book Update on the Chemical Thermodynamics of Uranium Neptunium Plutonium Americium and Technetium written by R. Guillaumont and published by . This book was released on 2003-11-04 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the series on "Chemical Thermodynamics", published under the aegis of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, and updates and expands the thermodynamic data on inorganic compounds and complexes of uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium and technetium contained in the previous volumes of the series. A review team, composed of seven internationally recognized experts, has critically reviewed during five years all the scientific literature containing chemical thermodynamic information for the above mentioned systems that has appeared since the publication of the earlier volumes. The results of this critical review carried out following the Guidelines of the OECD NEA Thermochemical Database Project have been documented in the present volume, which contains new tables of selected values for formation and reaction thermodynamical properties and an extensive bibliography.

Book Calibration of Uranium and Plutonium in Nitric Acid Solutions for X ray Fluorescence Analysis

Download or read book Calibration of Uranium and Plutonium in Nitric Acid Solutions for X ray Fluorescence Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment was statistically designed to generate calibration curves for the determination of plutonium and uranium in nitric acid solutions using the x-ray fluorescence technique. An energy dispersive spectrometer was used for all measurements, and the internal standard (ytrrium) method was used. A wide range of analyte and acid concentrations was chosen to cover varying matrices and more closely simulate actual conditions. The calibration curves generated were evaluated by examining both the bias (estimated value - true value) and the 95% confidence intervals for estimated concentrations of analytes. The absolute biases for plutonium and uranium increased with increasing concentrations. The minimum and maximum ranges for the plutonium bias are +-0.03 and +-0.09 mg/ml occurring at 0.00 and 1.99 mg/ml of plutonium, respectively. For uranium, the ranges are +-0.02 and +-0.26 mg/ml occurring at 0.00 and 13.33 mg/ml of uranium, respectively. These biases can be reduced by calibrating over narrower concentration ranges or by making replicate determinations. 12 references, 6 figures.

Book Health Risks of Radon and Other Internally Deposited Alpha Emitters

Download or read book Health Risks of Radon and Other Internally Deposited Alpha Emitters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes hazards from radon progeny and other alpha-emitters that humans may inhale or ingest from their environment. In their analysis, the authors summarize in one document clinical and epidemiological evidence, the results of animal studies, research on alpha-particle damage at the cellular level, metabolic pathways for internal alpha-emitters, dosimetry and microdosimetry of radionuclides deposited in specific tissues, and the chemical toxicity of some low-specific-activity alpha-emitters. Techniques for estimating the risks to humans posed by radon and other internally deposited alpha-emitters are offered, along with a discussion of formulas, models, methods, and the level of uncertainty inherent in the risk estimates.
