Book excerpt: This research aimed to evaluate tourism management in Nakhon Si Thammarat province (NST) by considering the 15A's tourism elements. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 400 and 30 foreign quality tourists who were purposively selected. The research tools used were self-administered questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) were used to analyze the data. The results revealed factors that show the weaknesses of NST tourism management as a secondary tourism city within Quadrant A and C. Quadrant A includes infrastructures, local involvement in tourism, service quality and political stability which have been urgently improved. Quadrant C includes accessibility between places within NST, public transportation, historical and archaeological sites, man-made attractions, variety and difference of activities from main cities, suitable activities toward tourist requirements, various choices of accommodations, service providers, tourism interpretations, authenticity of art and traditional architecture, attractiveness to spend more money and potentiality to link with main cities are provincial weak points and need to be improved. Whereas, Quadrant B includes accessibility from the main city to NST, natural attractions, cultural attractions, restaurants/cuisine, quality of accommodations, value for money in accommodations, friendliness and hospitality of local people, local ways of life, overall atmosphere of the city, supporting service, quality of local life, overall safety and security and value for money and time show their strong point for the provincial tourism management that the province needs to constantly maintain them. Quadrant D includes a tourist information provision, this factor is not urgently required for improvement.

This study investigates the perceived value, satisfaction and revisit of Russian tourists who visit Thailand on the basis of selected tourism destinations in Bangkok, Thailand.

Book excerpt: Assessing social value in cultural heritage places: a case study of tourism gentrification in Thailand in its regional context Abstract Cultural Heritage Places are rarely appraised in order to understand the life of the host community, and especially its own cultural and social values. This research aimed to establish how this knowledge is obtained by conceptualising the 'cultural value' in urban conservation and analysing current approaches to cultural heritage management and tourism development in Thailand in its regional context. It particularly includes the identification of social impact variables of tourism gentrification and the application of cultural value assessment in urban conservation and tourism management policies. The issue was analysed in two stages using a qualitative research approach and a case study method. The first stage aimed to interpret the conservation and tourism context through secondary data of historic quarters in the broader regional context of 'Indochina', The second used primary data from the fieldwork research, by means of observations and interviews from three historic waterfront marketplaces in the central Thailand, which were analysed under three main themes: the tangible elements and temporal meanings of space; communication and the intangible elements of space; and the aspects of place and identity that include distinctiveness, continuity, self-esteem and self-efficacy. There are four main conclusions. First, the cultural values are spontaneously changed with the inhabitants' place valuation th~t is definednot so much by the tangible physical aspects but rather by the behaviour and cognitive aspects of communication (i.e. socio- economic, sociocultural and spiritual dimensions, and self-identification with place). Second, the current regional approaches have partially shifted towards the rural and common people's heritage of the recent past, however with a major element of tourism gentrification, patronisation and neglect of the social values of the host community. Third, the case study analysis revealed the loss of diversity in socioeconomic activities, a decreasing degree of social coherence, and the distortion of the traditional meanings and the miscommunication of distance and time on the hierarchy and ritual of space. Fourth, when considering the sense of place in tourism planning, urban conservation and heritage management, emphasis should be placed on the observation of the everyday behaviour of the host community and the cognitive aspects of communication (of distance and time) on space and self-identity as connected with the place.
