Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to conduct a formative evaluation of the efficacy of the Team Advisory program, an in-school intervention in an urban public high school using fitness to teach study skills and social responsibility, based on the perspective of its faculty (n=9). The first research question asks what do Boston English Advisors (BEHST Advisors) and Boston University graduate student advisors (BUGS Advisors) perceive as effective and ineffective about the Team Advisory program. The secondary question asks, from the perspective of the Team Advisory staff, was the program accomplishing its goals, and was the program sustainable? An interview guide was developed for the purposes of this study. The sample was comprised of BUGS advisors (n=4) and BEHST advisors (n=4), as well as the program director (n=1) with a total of 9 interviewees. Based on 73 pages of single space transcribed verbatim interviews, data from qualitative interview data and participant observer notes was used for thematic analysis. The four major themes to emerge from the data included challenges, successes, social responsibility, and suggestions to improve the program. Results indicated that the program was successful in teaching social responsibility themes to this specific, urban population of students, but was less successful in incorporating the original academic component. Staff training and schedule inconsistencies lead to other deficiencies. Results can be used by educators and applied to program design and implementation when attempting to teach social responsibility and other study skills through fitness in similar settings. However, there will be a need to focus on improvement in the areas of staff selection, training, school leadership support, and scheduling to achieve these goals.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This mixed methods program evaluation examines the effectiveness of a high school advisory program in meeting its stated goals from the perspective of its various stakeholders. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods and applying a concurrent embedded strategy, the researcher uses Stufflebeam's CIPP Model (Stufflebeam, McKee & McKee, 2003) as a framework to conduct a study of the Teachers-As-Advisors (TAA) Program in a rural high school in Georgia. Surveys were administered to 205 students, 40 parents, and 17 advisors. Two district administrators, three school administrators, and two counselors were interviewed. In addition, focus group discussions were held with a purposeful sample of students, recent graduates, parents, and faculty advisors. As a final step, the ancillary materials utilized in the program were analyzed. Analysis of the data collected indicates that stakeholders believe the program goals are being met. Identified strengths of the program include the advisors who serve as caring, adult advocates for advisees, monitor their advisees' academic progress, and celebrate their achievements. Advisor training, communication between the home and school, and a balanced curriculum were identified as areas needing improvement. The end goal for program evaluation (Stufflebeam et al., 2003) is to determine a program's effectiveness in order to inform decision making about the program. The findings from this study will be disseminated to school and district administrators and the School Advisory Committee, in order to enable school leaders to make informed decisions about the TAA program.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to analyze the results of an anonymous survey given to students and staff at Liberty North High School. The purpose of the study and the survey was to determine the perceived effectiveness on the advisory program in the school by both teachers and students. Chi square was used to analyze the 125 surveys collected to test the statistical dependence of the research questions posed in the surveys in regards to awareness of the purpose of the program, connectedness to advisor/advisee, opinion on time and topics covered in the program and whether or not the topics and lessons are actually carried through in particular advisory. The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.
