Book Evaluation of the Recovery Annealing of the Reactor Pressure Vessel of NPP Nord Greifswald Units 1 and 2 by Means of Subsize Impact Specimens

Download or read book Evaluation of the Recovery Annealing of the Reactor Pressure Vessel of NPP Nord Greifswald Units 1 and 2 by Means of Subsize Impact Specimens written by R. Ahlstrand and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988 and 1990, the reactor pressure vessels of Units 1 and 2, respectively, of the Greifswald nuclear power station were subjected to heat treatment at 475°C for annealing of irradiation effects. To demonstrate the effect of annealing and to evaluate a new postannealing transition temperature of vessel base metal and weld metal, boat samples were removed by means of electric discharge machining (EDM) from the (unclad) inner surface of the vessel. From these samples, micronotched bar impact test specimens were fabricated and tested at different temperatures. Transition curves were evaluated from the results. By means of correlation tests, the transition temperatures evaluated from the micro-specimen tests are converted to standard Charpy-V transition temperatures. Results are available for the weld metal of Unit 1 after annealing. The transition temperature TK is lower than the value calculated by the designer of the plant. Specimens removed from Unit 2 before and after annealing are in preparation.

Book Microstructure Response of WWER 440 Reactor Pressure Vessel Weld Material After Irradiation and Annealing Treatment

Download or read book Microstructure Response of WWER 440 Reactor Pressure Vessel Weld Material After Irradiation and Annealing Treatment written by A. Zeman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this publication is to contribute to the recent research and development efforts on mitigation of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) embrittlement for operational lifetime extension. This research was done in the framework of the PRIMAVERA international project and it was focused on the WWER-440 reactor pressure vessel materials, specifically weld metals. The investigation primarily addressed the issues related to the re-irradiation effects and annealing treatment of "Russian-type" weld metals. A series of experimental data for WWER-440 reactor pressure vessel welds are reported and discussed to analyse the effect of the recovery annealing procedure. The specific annealing process has been developed and practically applied for "Russian-type" reactor pressure vessels to recover the negative effect of radiation embrittlement. Besides mechanical properties, more detailed information regarding microstructure evolution is described because it brings additional information which can help to understand the embrittlement-annealing-re-embrittlement processes. This study contributes to the experimental investigation of three different welds with high levels of copper (0.16 wt. %) and variable content of phosphorus (0.027-0.038 wt. %) at four different stages (unirradiated, irradiated, annealed after irradiation, and re-irradiated after annealing). The specimens were irradiated in the nuclear power plant (NPP) Rovno-1 and Rovno-2 up to a fluence of ~1.2 x 1023n/m2 and approximately 1.2 x 1024n/m2 and 5.9 x 1024n/m2 (En > 0.5 MeV) for the re-irradiation stage. After the first stage of irradiation, the samples were annealed in accordance with standard regime for WWER-440 RPVs (475°C, 100 h). The flux was about 4 x 1015n/m2s (Rovno-1) and 2 x 1016n/m2s (Rovno-2), respectively. The analysis of microstructure was done by atom probe tomography (APT) to obtain information concerning precipitation kinetics of Cu and P segregation, as well as interaction with other alloying elements. Further study of point-type defects and their clustering was analysed by positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques. The paper aims to report on behaviour of investigated RPV weld materials which were irradiated and annealed to analyse the response of main mechanical properties and microstructural parameters. The authors also believe that this study will be of value to the specialists and experts who are involved in the assessment of "Western-type" reactor pressure vessels, which is carried out as a part of ongoing international activities related to the safe and long term operation of present NPP fleet.

Book Thermal Annealing of the Reactor Pressure Vessel NPP Unit 2 in Jaslovsk Bohunice for Its Radiation Embrittlement Regeneration

Download or read book Thermal Annealing of the Reactor Pressure Vessel NPP Unit 2 in Jaslovsk Bohunice for Its Radiation Embrittlement Regeneration written by Š Cepcek and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status of the preparation works tor the thermal annealing operation at reactor pressure vessel (RPV) V-230-type Unit 2 in Jaslovské Bohunice planned for Autumn 1993 is presented in this paper. The producer of the RPV W-213 type. ŠKODA Works, will perform the thermal annealing operation and manufacture all equipment needed. During the planned shutdown for the refueling operation of this unit in September 1989, samples were prepared from base material (BM) and weld metal (WM) by means of special equipment used for the analysis of the chemical composition in the Nuclear Power Plants Research Institute (VÚJE) laboratories. Results of the analysis of the irradiated samples and the hardness measurements of RPV material before and after annealing operation serve as the measure of radiation embrittlement recovery efficiency. Possible extension of the operation life of RPVs of WWER type by means of suitable provisions during normal operation before thermal annealing is also discussed.

Book Use of Subsize Specimens for Determination of Radiation Embrittlement of Operating Reactor Pressure Vessels

Download or read book Use of Subsize Specimens for Determination of Radiation Embrittlement of Operating Reactor Pressure Vessels written by AD. Amayev and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents groundwork for determining the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) from subsize specimens (5 by 5 by 27.5 and 3 by 4 by 27.0 mm) and describes the correlation between the DBTT obtained from tests of standard Charpy specimens and subsize specimens. A method for taking samples from the inside surface of reactor pressure vessels and fabricating small specimens from them was developed in the USSR. This method is used to assess the effectiveness of pressure vessel recovery by annealing. Some results of the DBTT evaluation for the base and weld metal before and after recovery are given.

Book Embrittlement Recovery Due to Annealing of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Embrittlement Recovery Due to Annealing of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embrittlement of reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) can be reduced by thermal annealing at temperatures higher than the normal operating conditions. Although such an annealing process has not been applied to any commercial plants in the United States, one US Army reactor, the BR3 plant in Belgium, and several plants in eastern Europe have been successfully annealed. All available Charpy annealing data were collected and analyzed in this project to develop quantitative models for estimating the recovery in 30 ft-lb (41 J) Charpy transition temperature and Charpy upper shelf energy over a range of potential annealing conditions. Pattern recognition, transformation analysis, residual studies, and the current understanding of the mechanisms involved in the annealing process were used to guide the selection of the most sensitive variables and correlating parameters and to determine the optimal functional forms for fitting the data. The resulting models were fitted by nonlinear least squares. The use of advanced tools, the larger data base now available, and insight from surrogate hardness data produced improved models for quantitative evaluation of the effects of annealing. The quality of models fitted in this project was evaluated by considering both the Charpy annealing data used for fitting and the surrogate hardness data base. The standard errors of the resulting recovery models relative to calibration data are comparable to the uncertainty in unirradiated Charpy data. This work also demonstrates that microhardness recovery is a good surrogate for transition temperature shift recovery and that there is a high level of consistency between the observed annealing trends and fundamental models of embrittlement and recovery processes.

Book Evaluation of Thermal Annealing Behavior of Neutron Irradiated Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Using Nondestructive Test Methods

Download or read book Evaluation of Thermal Annealing Behavior of Neutron Irradiated Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Using Nondestructive Test Methods written by G. Brauer and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Usually the assessment of the irradiation sensitivity and annealing behavior of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels is performed by means of destructive test methods, mainly impact and tension tests. In this paper a new kind of search for an efficient temperature-time regime for postirradiation thermal heat treatment is presented using nondestructive test methods like positron annihilation (Doppler broadening pararneter S) and hardness (Vickers hardness HV 10).
