Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of an electrolytic dissolver based upon the metal-metal contact principle was investigated. Interchangeable baskets of niobium, titanium, and titanium clad on the interior surface with platinum-- 10 percent rhodium were used. Other modifications such as inclination, a cone insert, a trough, and a tapered annulus were adopted with some success. Continuous operation was demonstrated at the 200-ampere level by promoting dissolution of the lowest element. The problem of discontinuity of operation which is encountered with a niobium basket was eliminated by the use of baskets made of titanium or lined with noble metal. Even with the latter materials, a gradually declining current occurs due to deteriorating contacts. Protection of the contact, as with a mercury pool, provides steady service, but this approach is limited by the inability to remove the heel from the protective layer. An analysis was made of the resistances encountered and an extrapolation of performance with full-scale elements attempted. For the conditions chosen, an average current of approximately 2000 amperes appears attainable in a full-scale dlssolver. (auth).
