Book Evaluation of the Impact Response of Textile Composites

Download or read book Evaluation of the Impact Response of Textile Composites written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of the impact damage resistance and impact damage tolerance of stitched and unstitched uniweaves, 2-D braids, and 3-D weaves was conducted. Uniweave laminates were tested at four thicknesses to determine the sensitivity of the tests to this parameter. Several braid and weave parameters were also varied to establish their velocity (large mass) impacts and then loaded in tension or compression to measure residual strength. Experimental results indicate that stitching significantly improves the uniweaves' damage resistance. The 2-D braids and 3-D weaves offered less damage resistance than the stitched materials. Stitching also improved the compression after impact (CAI) and tension after impact (TAI) strengths of the uniweave materials. Portanova, M. A. Unspecified Center...

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the details of the computational algorithm for a novel three-dimensional variational dynamic analysis approach developed in computational algorithm of impact contact problem based on variational mosaic model and numerical examples. The analysis approach is aimed at solving a variety of stress analysis problems of composite structural parts under the effect of impulsive and impact loads. Some specific applications of the developed analysis are shown on the examples of transverse dynamic bending of simply supported laminated plate and 3D contact analysis for a multi-brick structure under longitudinal and transverse longitudinal rigid body impact. Numerical results clearly show dynamic effects in response of simply supported laminated plate at high rate of transverse dynamic bending. As the rate of transverse dynamic bending decreases the response of simply supported laminated plate reduces to the corresponding benchmark static solution tensile response of 3D woven fabrics. This example shows the capability of the developed computer code to solve 3D dynamic problems for a wide range of dynamic loading rate. Numerical results for the 3D impact contact problem illustrate time variations of the target displacements, strains and stresses as well as the time variations of the projectile displacement and velocity and impact contact pressure obtained from solution of the coupled problem for mechanical system "projectile-target". Considered numerical examples validate applicability and verify accuracy of the developed computational algorithm and computer code.

Book Issues in the Analysis and Testing of Textile Composites with Large Representative Volume Elements

Download or read book Issues in the Analysis and Testing of Textile Composites with Large Representative Volume Elements written by Gerd Weissenbach and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2004-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high degree of heterogeneity of textile composites was found to be the primary problem in analysis and testing. A concept was developed based on a description of the local variation of the material stiffness matrix using a spline interpolation. The role of this stiffness function is to facilitate the calculation of the material stiffness matrix at any given position or for arbitrary domains in the form of finite elements.Based on this approach, two different methods were developed. In the first method the average material stiffness matrix is calculated for a finite element and subsequently the elemental stiffness matrix of this element is assembled. In the second approach the elemental stiffness matrix is calculated directly using the local material stiffness at the integration points of the finite element. This concept was then applied to the plate twist test. The numerical analysis of this test was done in order to determine the influence of heterogeneity on the test results. It was shown that this test measures the in-plane shear modulus largely independent of the representative volume element (RVE) size. Both finite element approaches were then applied to the V-notched beam shear test, to investigate the applicability of this test to the measurement of the shear properties. The test set-up as well as numerical parameters of the finite element analysis of the test were studied. It was possible to derive limits for the applicability of the V-notched beam shear test in terms of RVE size, as well as set up guidelines for the finite element analysis of textile composites. With electronic speckle pattern interferometry, which enables full-field displacement and strain measurements, tensile tests were carried out on 3D-woven textile composite specimens. With the agreement of the experimental results and the theoretical predictions the validity of the developed approach was again shown.

Book Impact Response and Dynamic Failure of Composites and Laminate Materials

Download or read book Impact Response and Dynamic Failure of Composites and Laminate Materials written by Jang Kyo Kim and published by Trans Tech Publications Ltd. This book was released on 1997-09-04 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many engineering applications of composite and laminate materials, damage and failure can be caused by impact of various types. Low-velocity impact is potentially dangerous because it can produce extensive sub-surface delamination that may not be visible on the surface. High-velocity impact produced by projectiles, shock waves and fragments from exploding ammunition is a highly dynamic event, leading to the penetration or perforation of composites. All impact damage is detrimental to the mechanical and structural performance of composites. Accurate evaluation of the damaged state, and a fundamental understanding of the effect of damage upon the resultant properties are therefore essential for the proper design and application of composite materials. The strain-rate dependence of material behavior, fracture propagation and energy-absorbing capacity are also of paramount importance from both the materials science and structural mechanics perspectives.
